Book excerpt: UNORTHODOX LIFE. In the 1930's, Germany, the most powerful and ruthless nation in the world, decreed that our family was to be exterminated. Rudy Rosenberg, born in Belgium in 1930 found himself and his immediate family locked in Belgium. Rudy, his sister Ruth, Hillel his Poland born father and Frieda his German born mother, Jewish and Stateless were unable to break out of Europe. The family watched the growth of Hitler and his Nazi anti-Semitic policies with increased concernhoping that unlike in the Great War (1914-1918) Belgium's neutrality would be respected by Germany. 1935 Anti-Jewish laws began in Germany (Frieda's family would be murdered and wiped out during (1942-1943) 1938 Hitler marched into Czechoslovakia. Hitler marched into Austria 1939 Hitler invaded Poland (Hillel's family would be murdered and wiped out (1941-1942), we heard of Jews being hunted and killed by the German invaders. 1940 In April, Hitler invaded Denmark and Norway. 1940 in May, Hitler invaded Belgium, Holland and France. Rudy and his family watched and remembered the anti-Jewish vitriol that seeped into occupied Europe and even in previously benign Belgium. Starting in 1941 the first arrests of thousands of Belgian Jews came about. These were released through the personal intervention of Belgium's Queen Elizabeth. (These Belgian Jews would later be arrested and deported again in 1943). In 1942, Rudy, Ruth and countless Jewish students were forbidden to continue their schooling. The family was left with limited choices. We had to either try to flee to unoccupied Switzerland or hide in convents or Christian camps or private homes. A last alternative was to await the German troops for the deadly arrest and deportation to concentration camps mostly in Poland or Germany where swift death would be certain. In June 1942 we purchased fake identity papers so we could flee to Switzerland. Unfortunately we soon learned that this escape route was too dangerous and not practical. Our parents found a safe hiding place in the Ardennes for Ruth and Rudy. For a fee Frieda found a basement to hide in Ixelles, a suburb of Brussels in a private home. Hillel, for a much larger fee, found a hiding place in a private house ini Uccle, another suburb of Brussels. For safety reasons, after about three months Ruth and Rudy left the hotel in the Ardennes.Ruth and Rudy went to hide and joined with father in Uccle. Six months later, in March 1943, Rudy went to hide with Frieda in her Ixelles basement where they remained in hiding until they were finally liberated on the 3rd of September 1944 after hiding in the basement for 17 months. The family spent over two years, 27 months, 823 days in hiding. We then tried to resume our educations, live again and become normal people again. Eventually Rudy left Europe for the USA, joined the US Army during the Korean conflict. Frieda and Ruth joined Rudy three years later. In 1991 Rudy wrote and published "And Somehow We Survive" an account of the struggle of his family to survive. Now Rudy Rosenberg expands his life and the attempts to sort out the early life, survival and his arrival in the USA .There he details his bewildering coming to terms with his ethnic background, a faith he never knew and the religion he ran away from: AN UNORTHODOX LIFE.

Book excerpt: ...As I Shall Be Someday depicts the highs and lows, the soul searching, the effects of the Vietnam War and the love/hate relationships inherent in the generation growing up in the 60’s and 70’s. Young adults were thrust into this era with no understanding of the real work world, no support or financial help from their parents of the previous generation and no idea what they were to do with their lives in the midst of love, protest, drugs, alcohol, and loud and wonderful music. From the safety of growing up in the 50’s to the reality of the era was a powerful awakening in a very short time. This is a look, in poetry and prose, at that generation’s conflict which never really was resolved in their personal lives. It is a moving and emotional look at that era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MONEY, MURDER, AND MADNESS, A BANKING LIFE, HOW YOUR GOVERNMENT CAUSED THE FINANCIAL CRISIS, is not just another book about the crisis. Forrest Cook avoids impenetrable financial jargon and takes the reader on a refreshingly different look on why the crisis happened and who were the government officials responsible. It is an interesting book to read especially in this election year. He explains why the conventional reporting is misleading or wrong. Cook makes a convincing case that the Clinton and Bush administrations and members of Congress, Democrats and Republicans, pursued an extreme affordable housing agenda that led to the failure of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Readers will be shocked to learn how Fannie and Freddie officials rewarded themselves with huge salaries and bonuses through fraudulent bookkeeping and dishonest financial reporting. If Fannie and Freddie had not failed requiring a massive government intervention and the largest bailout in our history, its likely the crisis would have been avoided. Six years after the government takeover of Fannie and Freddie the taxpayers continue to own and heavily subsidize one of the largest companies in the world. Cook also explains how the bailout is hundreds of billions of dollars more than reported in the financial press. He also writes about his personal journey in banking, and its not what the reader expects. He tells charming stories about the human side of the business and unlikely events including death threats, demonstrations, a violent bank robbery, and the murder of a Boston police officer.

Book excerpt: Herb Streifer was born in the Bronx in 1915, an area where upward, aspiring immigrants-Jewish, Italian and Irish-went to escape the ghettos of the lower East Side. When his father died in 1930 at the beginning of the Great Depression, Streifer was fifteen. He and his siblings helped their mother run the family grocery in Elmhurst, Queens through the depression years. Cash became so tight they had to give up their large apartment and move to the back of the store. Once Streifer finished high school, he continued working and went to City College nights. He graduated in 1941 with a BS just in time to be drafted into the army. Streifer married during WW II and, after the war, earned an MBA by night at NYU, and started a family. From these experiences, his wry humor, and an appreciation for a great anecdote, the stories came.

Book excerpt: In the 1840s, Adam Gimbel opened a humble dry goods store in Vincennes, Indiana, that began a retail dynasty spanning 144 years. At its peak, the store offered warm service and affordable goods at over thirty locations in four "Gimbels cities." Former customers still wistfully recall the wonders of Toyland and Gimbels Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia, the New York City store's famous rivalry with Macy's, the decadent Annaclairs of the Pittsburgh candy department and Gertie the duck, whose brood captured the imagination of Milwaukee. With fond memories from family members and Gimbelites, a few classic recipes and celebrity interviews from the likes of Gene London and Dick Clark, the author celebrates the remarkable history of this beloved department store.

They call him the gourmet detective. From his home in London to the culinary capitals of Europe and beyond, he is known for his sharp mind and even sharper palate. When chefs need a rare ingredient or a new idea to gain that extra Michelin-star boost, they come to him. And when cases turn deadly, he has a most exquisite way of catching killers. The Gourmet Detective: Hired to uncover a renowned secret recipe, the gourmet detective infiltrates the most exclusive culinary circle in London. But the job takes a bitter turn when a chef is poisoned in this “fabulous, four-star feast” of a debut (Michael Klauber, restaurateur). “Read King because you like a nicely structured mystery. Read him because you love gourmet food. Either way, savor the feast he has prepared.” —Sarasota Herald-Tribune Spiced to Death: When a legendary spice is found in New York, the gourmet detective is there to authenticate the priceless supply. And when it vanishes, he dives into New York’s culinary underworld to sniff out a murderer of exceptional taste. “Like a sumptuous meal served with an opulent wine, you simply won’t want this book to end.” —Michael Klauber, restaurateur Dying on the Vine: Hired by a major French winery to investigate the shady owner of a neighboring vineyard, the gourmet detective barely arrives in Provence before discovering the rivalry has risen to murder in a mystery that “sits just right on the palate” (Booknews). “King spins another light mystery treat.” —Publishers Weekly Death Al Dante: A famous actor-turned-restaurateur sends the gourmet detective to Italy on a chef hunt, but the plush assignment turns prickly when he realizes that someone is out to make his next opulent, all-expenses-paid meal his last. “Fast fun, delightful characters.” —Library Journal
