Book excerpt: Historical records from Lake Winnebago show minimal macrophyte growth; however, reports from recent years claim that macrophyte growth in some areas of the lake has reached nuisance levels. This study aimed to investigate the species of macrophytes present and their abundances in four near-shore locations, as well as measurements of multiple water quality conditions. Rake sampling was used to identify species and quantify their abundances and distributions. In addition, data were collected on light penetration, Secchi depths, and suspended algae chlorophyll concentrations at each site. These data from shallow near-shore sites reveal trends in changing water clarity and light penetration when compared to past and current data from deep-water sites. Macrophytes find habitats with increased light penetration advantageous for growth and competition; this suggests that the macrophyte species may have flourished recently due to comparatively better water clarity. In addition to two dominant native species, Coontail and Wild Celery, we also observed two invasive species (Eurasian Watermilfoil and Curly-leaf Pondweed). Eurasian Watermilfoil was found in high abundances in three out of the four sampling sites. Possible causes of increased water clarity, in particular the invasion of zebra mussels, will also be discussed. This study provides baseline data on the current macrophyte communities and will facilitate further exploration of recent changes in growth conditions that have resulted in such high abundances of macrophytes.

Book excerpt: Indices have been developed using macrophytes and water quality parameters to detect the impact of anthropogenic disturbance on coastal wetlands of the Great Lakes, but such an index does not currently exist for Lake Simcoe. As wetland macrophytes are influenced by water quality, any impairment in wetland quality should be reflected by taxonomic composition, biomass and dynamics of the macrophyte community. This study investigates the potential use of macrophytes as a tool for monitoring water quality by examining the dynamics (species richness, density, diversity, and above-ground biomass) in emergent macrophyte communities in fringe wetlands around Lake Simcoe exposed to contrasting degrees of disturbance. Macrophytes and limnologic data were collected from six wetlands over four seasons from 2013 - 2014. The macrophytes were identified to species and limnologic data was quantified to reflect the water quality, which was measured as a proxy for site disturbance. Wetlands in this study correspond to a wide range of environmental conditions, ranging from very clear and nutrient poor oligotrophic conditions (e.g., TP =11.25 μg/L, TN = 345.25 μg/L, CHL a =1.37 mg·m-3) to turbid and eutrophic wetlands (e.g., TP = 47.25 μg/L, TN = 2285 μg/L, CHL a = 3.26 mg·m-3. Overall, the limnologic parameters indicated that water quality reflected the degree of anthropogenic degradation influencing the wetland. Taxonomic composition and population dynamics reflected the water quality. The least disturbed site was dominated by native Scirpus acutus and Scirpus pungens, which are mostly intolerant of environmental degradation, as well as the cosmopolitan Sparganium eurycarpum, found in all sites and tolerant of many different conditions. The moderately disturbed sites were dominated by both intolerant and tolerant species, including Scirpus acutus, Leersia oryzoides, Eleocharis smallii, Typha x glauca, Typha angustifolia, and Sparganium eurycarpum. The highly disturbed sites were also dominated by Sparganium eurycarpum, and species that are considered to be invasive, aggressive, and/or very tolerant of degradation, including Typha x glauca, Typha angustifolia, Phragmites australis, and Calamagrostis canadensis. These species are indicator species of wetland integrity and their relationship with the limnologic parameters as determined by ordination demonstrated responses that were consistent with the literature. Thus this study validates that macrophytes could be used as an indicator of water quality changes in this study area.

Book excerpt: A hydrodynamic, water temperature, and water-quality model of the Link River to Keno Dam reach of the upper Klamath River was updated to account for macrophytes and enhanced pH buffering from dissolved organic matter, ammonia, and orthophosphorus. Macrophytes had been observed in this reach by field personnel, so macrophyte field data were collected in summer and fall (June-October) 2011 to provide a dataset to guide the inclusion of macrophytes in the model. Three types of macrophytes were most common: pondweed (Potamogeton species), coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum), and common waterweed (Elodea canadensis). Pondweed was found throughout the Link River to Keno Dam reach in early summer with densities declining by mid-summer and fall. Coontail and common waterweed were more common in the lower reach near Keno Dam and were at highest density in summer. All species were most dense in shallow water (less than 2 meters deep) near shore. The highest estimated dry weight biomass for any sample during the study was 202 grams per square meter for coontail in August. Guided by field results, three macrophyte groups were incorporated into the CE-QUAL-W2 model for calendar years 2006-09. The CE-QUAL-W2 model code was adjusted to allow the user to initialize macrophyte populations spatially across the model grid. The default CE-QUAL-W2 model includes pH buffering by carbonates, but does not include pH buffering by organic matter, ammonia, or orthophosphorus. These three constituents, especially dissolved organic matter, are present in the upper Klamath River at concentrations that provide substantial pH buffering capacity. In this study, CE-QUAL-W2 was updated to include this enhanced buffering capacity in the simulation of pH. Acid dissociation constants for ammonium and phosphoric acid were taken from the literature. For dissolved organic matter, the number of organic acid groups and each group's acid dissociation constant (Ka) and site density (moles of sites per mole of carbon) were derived by fitting a theoretical buffering response to measured upper Klamath River alkalinity titration curves. The organic matter buffering in the Klamath River was modeled with two monoprotic organic acids: carboxylic acids with a mean pKa of 5.584 and site density of 0.1925, and phenolic organic acids with a mean pKa of 9.594 and site density of 0.6466. Total inorganic carbon concentrations in the model boundary inputs were recalculated based on the new buffering equations. CE-QUAL-W2 was also adjusted to allow the simulation of nonconservative alkalinity caused by nitrification, denitrification, photosynthesis, and respiration. The Klamath River model was recalibrated after the macrophyte and pH buffering updates producing improved predictions for pH, dissolved oxygen, and particulate carbon.

Several studies have focused on the interactions between submerged macrophytes and other autotrophic components and the impact of the plants on the dynamics of nutrients, dissolved organic and inorganic carbon, oxygen, and pH. Comparatively few studies have dealt with the ability of submerged macrophytes to modulate the structure and dynamics of pelagic and benthic food webs. Recently, however, the amount of research into the structuring role of submerged macrophytes in food webs has markedly increased, and the results obtained so far suggest that sub merged macrophytes are of significant importance for the food web interactions and environmental quality of lakes, even at relatively low areal plant coverage. For example, plants affect the interactions between predacious, planktivorous, and benthivorous fish and between fish and invertebrates, including key organisms such as large zooplankton and snails. Changes in these interactions in turn may have cascading effects on the entire food web in both the pelagial and the littoral zone. To provide a forum for discussion of recent results in this growing field of research and to define future research needs, a workshop was held on 16 to 20 June, 1996, at the Freshwater Centre in Silkeborg, Denmark.
