Book excerpt: New materials are required to solve global challenges such as the growing energy demand and reducing the threat of new and re-emerging diseases and infections. Metallopolymers is an exciting and promising area of research and this book focuses on the strategy of incorporating transition metals into macromolecules to design functional materials for addressing such problems. The book starts with an introduction to current global challenges and the role of materials science in tackling these, it then discusses the fundamentals of metallopolymers and their synthesis. The final chapters look at specific applications of the materials from photovoltaics and light-emitting diodes for energy conservation, to biological sensors and drug delivery platforms. Written by leading experts in the field, this book is an ideal reference for students and researchers working in polymer chemistry, organometallic chemistry and materials science interested in both the polymers and their applications in energy and health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the pioneering publications on coordination chemistry by Lehn and Pedersen in the late 1960s, coupled with the more orthodox interest from the transition metal chemists on template reactions (Busch, 1964), the field of supramolecular chemistry has grown at an astonishing rate. The use of transition metals as essential constituents of multi-component assemblies has been especially sharp in recent years, since the metals are prone to quick and reversible redox changes, and there is a wide variety of metal--ligand interactions. Such properties make supramolecular complexes of transition metal ions suitable candidates for exploration as light--energy converters and signal processors. Transition Metals in Supramolecular Chemistry focuses on the following main topics: (1) metal controlled organization of novel molecular assemblies and shapes; (2) design of molecular switches and devices operating through metal centres; (3) supramolecular catalysts that mimic metalloenzymes; (4) metal-containing sensory reagents and supramolecular recognition; and (5) molecular materials that display powerful electronic, optoelectronic and magnetic properties.

Book excerpt: Metal and metalloid-containing compounds exhibit a wide range of biological and biocidal activities, some of which have been employed in medicines and drugs. Polymers containing metal or metalloid functions become a natural extension of this effort; just as organic compound drugs have been chemically bound to polymers or physically imbibed into polymer matrices in order to provide a variety of useful advantages, the same opportunities exist for using metal and metalloid species. This volume will cover important biomedical applications of organometallic compounds, including metal-labeled DNA on surfaces, artificial metallo-DNA, organotin molecules as anti-cancer drugs, and much more. It provides useful descriptions of biomedical applications for the reader to apply in his/her research into materials, polymers, and medicine/drug development. It is edited by high-quality team of macromolecular experts from around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition metal ions in biological systems are of interest in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, medicine, and physics. Scien tists with rather different viewpoints, employing many methods, have contributed to this area. A concise review of the current state of the field will, to some extent, reflect the special knowledge of the person writing it - in this case application of physical methods to the investigation of metal coordination. x ray diffraction is one of the most important of these methods, but a useful treatment of X-ray structure analysis would be com parable in size with and beyond the scope of the monograph. Many results of X-ray diffraction studies are, of course, presented. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy has played a major part in the rapid advance in knowledge of the electronic struc tures of transition metal ions in biological systems. More gener ally, measurements involving light, microwaves, and magnetic fields are capable of producing much new information, and the required instrumentation is available at most research institu tions. Therefore light absorption and paramagnetic resonance are treated in depth. The principles described in the latter discus sions are broadly applicable, for example to the promising tech niques of X-ray spectroscopy (utilizing synchrotron radiation) and lanthanide-perturbed, very high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series Advances in Dendritic Macromolecules aims to cover the synthetic, as well as chemical, aspects of this expanding field: the chemistry to and supramolecular chemistry of dendritic or cascade supermolecular compounds. In Chapter 1 of this volume, Hawker and Wooley delineate the convergent growth approach to dendrimers, then relate their three-dimensional architectures to different block polymers. In Chapter 2, Moors and Vögtle describe Professor Vögtle's initial cascade molecules via the repetitive strategy, then expand his original concepts of its application by others, and lastly delineate the synthesis of a new series of tosylamide cascades. They also demonstrate the utility of his original Michael addition/reduction procedure by its application to differ cores. Chapter 3, composed by Professor Engel, describes ionic dendrimers which incorporated an internal transition metal center as well as his work based on ammonium and phosphonium centers. In Chapter 4, Mathias and Carothers review recent studies on silicon-based dendrimers and hyperbranched polymers. Chapter 5, by Kim, describes the preparation and utility of hyperbranched aromatic polymers. Lastly in Chapter 6, Escamilla reviews the historical as well as recent examples of ionic and nonionic bolaamphiphiles.
