Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blood of His Servants is a remarkable true story. In the whole range of Holocaust literature it stands apart, for it recounts the search by one survivor for the single Nazi murderer of his family—a man who had once been their friend. In prewar Poland, Bibi Krumholz, the nephew of prosperous Jewish landowners, is befriended by the wealthy Dutchman Pieter Menten. Largely due to Menten’s wordly influence, Bibi leaves for Palestine in 1935. In the years before the war, Menten establishes a business partnership with Bibi’s family; in a legal battle over timber rights, Menten is publicly embarrassed and swears retribution. It comes swiftly. In 1945, Bibi is desperate for news of his family. Wisps of rumor drift to Tel Aviv about the fate of his village. Then Bibi learns from survivors that Menten exacted a hideous revenge, that as an adviser to an SS killer squad, Menten directed the execution of all Jews in the village—including every member of Bibi’s family. Bibi vows vengeance and his hunt begins.

Book excerpt: A Private Empire explores Britain's imperial past through the eyes and experiences of a single family. Historian Stephen Foster focuses on the Macphersons of Blairgowrie in Scotland, who recorded their private and public lives through five generations in an extraordinary archive of letters, documents and diaries. Elegantly presented with contemporary paintings and photographs, A Private Empire tells an intimate story of ambition and frustration, love and deception, wisdom and folly, pride and shame, passion and restraint, an attachment to place, an affection for kin-all set against the grand shifting background of Britain's imperial rule. 'In a world overpopulated by self-indulgent family histories, A Private Empire is that rarity which makes one keep reading to find out what happened to its cast of strangers.' Stephen Wilks, The Canberra Times 'A remarkably impressive book. The story he tells is an extraordinary one; indeed if it were written in the fictional genre of the family saga you would think he was stretching credulity.' Professor Stuart Macintyre, AO 'Superbly researched and wonderfully revelatory.' Professor John Mackenzie, The Scotsman 'An enthralling read and an important piece of history.' Undiscovered Scotland

Book excerpt: In Rett MacPherson's Family Skeletons, as resident genealogist, historian, tour guide, and occasional amateur snoop, Victory "Torie" O'Shea can be found anywhere in the historic German town of New Kassel, Missouri--mixing fudge, giving tours, tracing family trees, and even investigating murder... When shop-owner Norah Zumwalt asks Torie for help in piecing together her family lineage to find her missing father, Torie cheerfully agrees. But before Torie delivers her results, Norah is brutally murdered. Now Torie must use her formidable skills at prying into the past--and the human heart--to solve a case of passionate secrets and betrayal. But as the Mississippi floods, she may be in deep trouble when evidence of another killing surfaces--and Torie comes face to face with a family skeleton that will chill her to the bone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that while Anglo-Saxon culture has given rise to virtually no myths at all, myth has played a central role in the historical development of Scottish identity. Hugh Trevor-Roper explores three myths across 400 years of Scottish history: the political myth of the "ancient constitution" of Scotland; the literary myth, including Walter Scott as well as Ossian and ancient poetry; and the sartorial myth of tartan and the kilt, invented--ironically, by Englishmen--in quite modern times. Trevor-Roper reveals myth as an often deliberate cultural construction used to enshrine a people's identity. While his treatment of Scottish myth is highly critical, indeed debunking, he shows how the ritualization and domestication of Scotland's myths as local color diverted the Scottish intelligentsia from the path that led German intellectuals to a dangerous myth of racial supremacy. This compelling manuscript was left unpublished on Trevor-Roper's death in 2003 and is now made available for the first time. Written with characteristic elegance, lucidity, and wit, and containing defiant and challenging opinions, it will absorb and provoke Scottish readers while intriguing many others. "I believe that the whole history of Scotland has been coloured by myth; and that myth, in Scotland, is never driven out by reality, or by reason, but lingers on until another myth has been discovered, or elaborated, to replace it."-Hugh Trevor-Roper

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eli Macpherson’s grandparents traveled with an 1858 wagon train caravan over the Santa Fe Trail to the New Mexico Territory. The settlers established a settlement called Friendly Valley located in the shadow of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Eli, born in 1862, completed eighth grade at the Friendly Valley school. His early years are documented in books 1 and 2 in the Preface. Eli, a Shepherd Boy, from Boyhood to Manhood is a continuation of the Eli story. In 1876 he began working at his grandfather’s General Store while completing high school. On train travels east to attend college, Eli crossed the Mississippi River at St. Louis over the historic 1,524-foot steel arch bridge—an engineering marvel completed in 1874. Eli obtained a 160-acre homestead permit for land located north of Friendly Valley. During summer vacations from college, Eli, with the help of Jake, a mountain man who left the mountains after losing his wife to a grizzly bear, constructed buildings, built fences, and stocked the homestead with farm animals. When Eli graduated from college in 1885, he married Eleanor Lewis, an eastern girl, and the young couple traveled West to the New Mexico Territory. The story continues as the couple raise three children while living on Eli’s homestead ranch. Books 1, 2, and 3 include math–history topics interwoven into a human interest story of the American frontier to provide an interesting read for elementary and high school students. Author Ronald B. McPherson is a structural engineer and retired university professor.
