Book excerpt: This collection includes contributions from some of the major authors in the field. The critical essays have been chosen to open up possibilities, mark out boundaries and set objectives in the ever-expanding field of international literature in English. The writers themselves are the principal guides and resources for this enterprise. New literary and critical practices are derived from the problematic role of English as an international language and from its relations with other languages. Values of cultural difference and particularity are emphasised.
Book Synopsis Plate Boundaries and Natural Hazards by : Joao C. Duarte
Download or read book Plate Boundaries and Natural Hazards written by Joao C. Duarte and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-08-08 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of the new millennium has been particularly devastating in terms of natural disasters associated with tectonic plate boundaries, such as earthquakes in Sumatra, Chile, Japan, Tahiti, and Nepal; the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean tsunamis; and volcanoes in Indonesia, Chile, Iceland that have produced large quantities of ash causing major disruption to aviation. In total, half a million people were killed by such natural disasters. These recurring events have increased our awareness of the destructive power of natural hazards and the major risks associated with them. While we have come a long way in the search for understanding such natural phenomena, and although our knowledge of Earth dynamics and plate tectonics has improved enormously, there are still fundamental uncertainties in our understanding of natural hazards. Increased understanding is crucial to improve our capacity for hazard prediction and mitigation. Volume highlights include: Main concepts associated with tectonic plate boundaries Novel studies on boundary-related natural hazards Fundamental concepts that improve hazard prediction and mitigation Plate Boundaries and Natural Hazards will be a valuable resource for scientists and students in the fields of geophysics, geochemistry, plate tectonics, natural hazards, and climate science. Download or read book Freud's Mafia written by Paul Boggs and published by . This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sigmund Freud is touted by the psychiatric industrial complex as a savior of those struggling with unseen injuries. In reality, Freud was the head of a global crime syndicate whose primary weapon was based on Greek fairy-tales dating back to c.8th-3rd Century B.C. Freud's fantasies were associated with the Persian conqueror Xerxes, destruction of Sparta at the Battle of Leuctra, the child eating Greek deity Cronus who was also identified in classical antiquity with the Roman deity Saturn, otherwise known as Satan. This book examines how Freud's unseen hand directed his psychological Mafia to orchestrate America's Great Depression, inspired Adolf Hitler, Russian and Chinese Communism, and brainwashed millions of Americans into a death cult, through television broadcasted predictive programming. This book reveals how Freud, through fraudulent statistics and fairy-tales, infected Western civilization with mental illness and profited off the deaths of hundreds of millions of human beings.

Download or read book I Will Survive written by Gloria Gaynor and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Will Survive is the story of Gloria Gaynor, America's "Queen of Disco." It is the story of riches and fame, despair, and finally salvation. Her meteoric rise to stardom in the mid-1970s was nothing short of phenomenal, and hits poured forth that pushed her to the top of the charts, including "Honey Bee," "I Got You Under My Skin," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and the song that has immortalized her, "I Will Survive," which became a #1 international gold seller. With that song, Gloria heralded the international rise of disco that became synonymous with a way of life in the fast lane - the sweaty bodies at Studio 54, the lines of cocaine, the indescribable feeling that you could always be at the top of your game and never come down. But down she came after her early stardom, and problems followed in the wake, including the death of her mother, whose love had anchored the young singer, as well as constant battles with weight, drugs, and alcohol. While her fans always imagined her to be rich, her personal finances collapsed due to poor management; and while many envied her, she felt completely empty inside. In the early 1980s, sustained by her marriage to music publisher Linwood Simon, Gloria took three years off and reflected upon her life. She visited churches and revisited her mother's old Bible. Discovering the world of gospel, she made a commitment to Christ that sustains her to this day.

Book Synopsis The Guyana Quartet by : Wilson Harris

Book excerpt: This epic masterpiece is a radical landmark in modern literature , reissued with a foreword by poet Ishion Hutchinson to mark Wilson Harris' centenary. 'An exhilarating experience ... Genius.' Jamaica Kincaid I dreamt I awoke with one dead seeing eye and one living closed eye ... Guyana. An ancient landscape of rainforests and swamplands, haunted by the legacy of slavery and colonial conquest. It is the site of dangerous journeys through the Amazonian interior, where riverboat crews embark on spiritual quests and government surveys are sabotaged by indigenous uprisings. It is a universe of complex moralities, where the conspiracies of a sinister money-lender and the faked death of a murderer question innocence and inheritance. It is a place where life and death, myth and history, philosophy and metaphysics blur. And it is the birthplace of an epic masterpiece. Wilson Harris' The Guyana Quartet consists of four incandescent novels: P alace of the Peacock, The Far Journey of Oudin, The Whole Armour and The Secret Ladder. It is a landmark of twentieth-century literature, as revolutionary today as it was over half a century ago. 'The Guyanese William Blake . [Such] poetic intensity.' Angela Carter 'One of the great originals ... Visionary ... Dazzlingly illuminating.' Guardian 'Amazing ... Masterly ... Near-miraculous.' Observer 'Perhaps the most inimitable [writer] produced in the English-speaking Caribbean.' Fred D'Aguiar 'An extraordinary writer ... Courageous and visionary ... It speaks to us in tongues.' Pauline Melville 'Staggering ... Both brilliant and terrifying.' The Times
Book Synopsis Language and Colonial Power by : Johannes Fabian
Download or read book Language and Colonial Power written by Johannes Fabian and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1991-08-16 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "..a work of very high scholarship and of a particularly valuable cultural critique...Fabian shows that European scholars, missionaries, soldiers, travellers, and administrators in Central Africa during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century used Swahili as a mode of extending their domination over African territories and people. The language was first studied and characterized, then streamlined for use among laboring people, then regulated as such fields as education and finance were also regulated. Any student of what has been called Africanist discourse, or of imperialism will find Language and Colonial Power an invaluable and path-breaking work (from Foreword).
Book Synopsis Patterns of Thought in Africa and the West by : Robin Horton
Download or read book Patterns of Thought in Africa and the West written by Robin Horton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-07-13 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robin Horton's critical and creative writings on African religious thought have influenced anthropologists, philosophers, and all those interested in the comparative study of religion and thought. This selection of some of his classic papers, with a new introduction and postscript by the author, traces Horton's theoretical ideas over thirty years. In attempting to understand African religious thought, he also tackles broader issues in the history and sociology of thought, such as secularisation and modernisation. Part I is a critical assessment of two established interpretive approaches, the Symbolist and the Theological. Part II proposes an alternative 'Intellectualist' approach that emphasises the structural and processual similarities between religious and scientific thinking. The postscript appraises the Intellectualist approach in the light of theorising about religion and world views.
Book Synopsis Ungoverned Imaginings by : Javed Majeed
Download or read book Ungoverned Imaginings written by Javed Majeed and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book re-examines British attitudes to India in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It places the emergence of utilitarianism in the context of these attitudes by focussing on James Mill's The History of British India (1817), and the work of Sir William Jones, Robert Southey, and Thomas Moore. In particular the study shows how the standard view of Mill's History does not do justice to the complexity of this text; Majeed argues that aesthetics played an important role in the formulation of Mill's utilitarian views, when he used British India as part of a much larger critique of British society itself. Mill's attempt to place thinking on these issues on a different footing illumines other scholars and poets whose writing on the Orient was an important part of the defining of their religious, social, and political views. Ungoverned Imaginings demonstrates how complex British attitudes to India were in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and how this might be explained in the light of domestic and imperial contexts.
Book Synopsis Poetry and the Realm of Politics by : Howard Erskine-Hill
Download or read book Poetry and the Realm of Politics written by Howard Erskine-Hill and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a major study of the relation between poetry and politcs in sixteenth and seventeenth century English literature, focusing in particular on the works of Spenser, Shakespeare, Jonson, Milton, and Dryden. Howard Erskine-Hill argues that the major tradition of political allusion is not, as has often been argued, that of the political allegory of Dryden's Absalom and Architophel, and other overtly political poems, but rather a more shifting and less systematic practice, often involving equivocal or multiple reference. Drawing on the revisionist trend in recent historiography, and taking issue with recent New Historicist criticism, the book offers new and thought-provoking readings of familiar texts. For example, Shakespeare's Histories, far from endorsing a conservative Tudor myth, are shown to examine and reject divine-right kingship in favour of a political vision of what the succession crisis of the 1590s required. A forgotten political aspect of Hamlet is restored and an anti-Cromwellian strain is identified in Milton's Paradise Lost. Again and again, Professor Erskine-Hill is able to show how some of the most powerful works of the period, works which in the past have been read for their aesthetic achievement and generalized wisdom, in fact contain a political component crucial to our understanding of the poem.
