This book was a wonderful read and brought back many memories of when I was a kid and the first time I went to Mackinaw Island. Aside from the intriguing story and its mystery, I loved the subtle life lessons that are presented, such as being kind and understanding, that makes such a difference in ourselves and others. As a big surprise, I also learned a ton of new things about the history of the area and the reasons behind their appearance. It kept my interest as an adult, and I just bought one for my 7-year-old friend as well. It's got my two thumbs up and I'm looking forward to reading the next one. Betsy Determined to win the annual Boy Scout charity race and lay claim to a prized jackknife, Liam works hard. The only roadblock to overcome is Danny, the club bully, who wants it for himself. However, neither boy is prepared for what happens at the event. After the race, the Boy Scouts and the members of the Vet Kids Club gather for their annual bonfire and BBQ hosted at Liam's farm. Charlie brings his family including his Uncle Makwa, a Native American from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. While sitting around the campfire, Mia, Liam's older sister, notices Makwa's tattoo of a white bear on his arm. Makwa shares a legend about the majestic "Spirit Bear." "Few will eye the white bear as he whispers through the forest, but the magic of his spirit remains in the trees, sky, and earth, and in those who seek his mark." Makwa tells her of seeing one in the UP, where Mia's family will be vacationing. "The Spirit Bear lives near the meeting of waters, where water falls from above and bears gather. A tamarack tree reaches to the sky. Here is where the spirit bear fused his mark deep into the red bark and those who touch it will receive the spirit bear's magic in their heart." While Liam and Mia are vacationing on Mackinac Island with their parents, will they find the Spirit Bear and solve the mystery? As soon as the boats dock, the sailors head for the legendary Pink Pony. But the night takes a grisly turn, and Jimmy Lyons is found dead the next morning in the bar, strangled by a string of Christmas tree lights. Murdo Halverson, a wealthy manufacturer from Detroit and Jimmy's former partner, is arrested for the murder. It turns out that the free spending Jimmy was broke. Each of his crew, including Murdo, had a reason to kill him. As did his wife, Jane. Burr Lafayette, recently divorced and the deposed head of the litigation department of a major Detroit law firm, is recruited to defend Murdo by his wife, Anne, and his mother, Martha, the widowed matriarch of the family. A man at loose ends, Burr is a brilliant litigator who prefers boats and dogs over courtrooms and clients. But he's not a criminal lawyer, and this looks like a losing case. Did Murdo kill Jimmy or was it someone else?

Excerpt: ...hastened to make their peace with the Iroquois, sending messages with wampum and gifts. Thus did the stratagem of a northern savage play a tremendous part in the annals of the time. The rapid ascendancy of the English dated from the hour of Adario's plot; and the seemingly trifling ambush in the woods paved the way for the crushing defeat of the Plains of Abraham. The dice-box of history records few stranger throws than the intrigue of Adario, a resident of Michilimackinac; and the cunning of The Rat has perhaps altered the destinies of the North and of us all. Just how Adario managed to retain the good graces of the French thereafter is not very plain to us. However, he does not appear to have been molested, and it is probable that later he settled at Detroit with many of his nation. It is certain that the Wyandots and Iroquois made up their differences in great part, and that the former dwelt long beside the river; where they had great influence among the lake tribes, and bequeathed their name to a thriving suburb of the great city. Before we say goodbye to so brainy a savage, it will be interesting to touch upon his sage talks with La Hontan, as reported by the latter at Michilimackinac. Call these interviews apocryphal or fictitious if you will; is it not probable that so shrewd a personality might have decided views on the philosophy of living? Thus: The Savage call'd Kat, whom I have mention'd so often in my Letters, has said to me several Times, that the only Thing in the World that vex'd and disturb'd his Mind, was the seeing Men wage War with Men. Prithee, my Brother, said he, do but look; our Dogs agree perfectly well with the Iroquese Dogs, and those of the Iroquese bear no enmity to Dogs that come from France. I do not know...
