A noncrystalline solid produced by continuous cooling from the liquid state is known as a glass. From the other point of view, a noncrystalline material, obtained by any other process, for example, vapor deposition or solid-state processing methods such as mechanical alloying, but not directly from the liquid state, is referred to as an amorphous material. At this moment, bulk metallic glasses (BMG) are appearing as a new class of metallic materials with unique physical and mechanical properties for structural and functional usage. Extreme values of strength, fracture toughness, magnetic properties, corrosion resistance, and other properties have been registered in BMG materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elastic properties of a solid are of considerable interest to both science and technology. Not only do they contain fundamental information about the nature of the inter-atomic bonding in the material, but they also determine the mechanical behavior of solids. In the past few years, considerable effort has been devoted to the study of elastic properties of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs), a relatively new class of metallic materials that display a unique combination of mechanical and physical properties. Our research has focused on Zr-based, Cu-based and Ca-based metallic glasses. Zr-based BMGs are known to have superior glass forming ability and high strength, but their ductility is too low for wide-spread practical applications. Cu-based BMGs recently received wide interest because of their low cost and good mechanical properties. Ca-based BMGs have low glass transition temperature T[subscript g], around 390 K, which make them very attractive to be studied near T[subscript g]. In this work, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) has been applied to study the elastic properties of above mentioned BMGs from 5 K to their glass transition temperature T[subscript g]. RUS is a novel technique for determining the elastic moduli of solids, based on the measurement of the resonances of a freely vibrating body. In an RUS experiment, the mechanical resonances of a freely vibrating solid of known shape are measured, and an iteration procedure is used to "match" the measured lines with the calculated spectrum. This allows determination of all elastic constant of the solid from a single frequency scan. Below T[subscript g], the elastic constants of the BMGs under investigation show "normal" behavior, i.e. with increasing temperature, all moduli decrease and Poisson ratio increases. Above T[subscript g] changes in the trends occur due to structural relaxation and crystallization. We confirmed the suggested link between ductility and Poisson ratio: BMGs showing good ductility display high Poisson ratio. By increasing palladium content in Zr50Cu40-[subscript x]Al10Pd[subscript x] alloys, BMGs with high Poisson ratio and thus good ductility have been obtained. In addition, we developed a simple model to provide fast and good estimate of the temperature dependence of elastic constants of BMGs from room temperature measurements.

Book excerpt: Metallic glasses are very promising engineering and functional materials due to their unique mechanical, chemical, and physical properties, attracting increasing attention from both scientific and industrial communities. However, their practical applications are greatly hindered due to three main problems: dimensional limit, poor tension plasticity, and difficulty in machining and shaping. Therefore, further investigation of these issues is urgently required. This book provides readers with recent achievements and developments in the properties and processing of metallic glasses, including mainly thermoplastic forming of metallic glasses (Chapter 2), atomic-level simulation of mechanical deformation of metallic glasses (Chapter 3), metallic glass matrix composites (Chapter 4), and tribo-electrochemical applications of metallic glasses (Chapters 5 and 6).

Book excerpt: Abstract: Thermo-mechanical processing of metallic glasses has been shown to change the free volume and have some effect on the mechanical properties. In order to better quantify these effects, we have studied the homogeneous flow of metallic glasses and the subsequent changes in atomic ordering, in terms of free volume and x-ray measurements, and mechanical properties via nanoindentation. The internal free volume of the specimens, as measured through changes in the specific heat by differential scanning calorimetry, has been shown to increase with increasing levels of total strain in tension and in compression. X-ray diffraction of amorphous specimens in the as-cast, annealed, and homogeneously deformed state also showed a change in the short-range atomic order of the alloy. The shape of the x-ray patterns for the as-cast and annealed states were nearly identical, while a decrease in intensity of x-rays was seen at high angles of 2[theta] in the homogeneously deformed samples. These high angles describe a change in the state of the short-range order. Nanoindentation has shown slight changes in the elastic properties and density of serrations in amorphous materials with changes in the free volume. Using available embedded atom method potentials, molecular dynamics simulations of several Cu-Zr binary, a Cu-Zr-Al ternary, and a quinternary Zr-Cu-Ni-Al-Ti alloy systems at multiple quench rates from the liquid were performed. Using an annealing/quenching technique that allows the simulation of even extremely slow quench rates, glassy structures of these alloys were produced at varying quench rates and their nearest-neighbor coordination examined. Radial distribution functions of the modeled systems show excellent agreement with experimental data, suggesting that the predicted atomic structure should have realistic features similar to real materials. The glass transition temperatures of several of these alloys were determined through a simulated dilatometry technique. Comparing the features and changes in the nearest-neighbor order and the simulated glass transitions with available experimental data, we found a novel set of criteria to predict the effect of changes in alloy composition on glass forming ability. The change in the distribution of nearest neighbors with quench rate, as compared in alloys with different experimentally determined glass forming abilities, did only provide some insights into the formation of glasses. However, the measurement of the fraction of atomic pairs that exhibited icosahedral-like short-range order was found to be directly related to the relative glass forming abilities of the alloys simulated.

Book excerpt: Understanding the compositional dependence of properties of silicate glass is critical to design novel glasses for various technology applications. With the development in molecular dynamics simulations and machine learning techniques, a combined and fully computational approach, which is able to reveal the relationship between glass composition and its mechanical properties, can be developed and served as a guide prior to experiments and manufacturing. On one hand, machine learning is a powerful tool to predict the properties based on the existing database. On the other hand, molecular dynamics simulation cannot only produce sufficient data points for machine learning models but also provide a detailed picture of the atomic structure of glasses. This atomic-scale knowledge from molecular dynamics simulation contains an intrinsic relationship between glass compositions and their mechanical properties. Here, we first use molecular dynamics simulation to generate the dataset for calcium aluminosilicate glasses and apply different machine learning models to predict their Young's modulus using glass compositions in Chapter 1. Next, we apply topological constraint theory to quantify the atomic structures of simulated glasses and use this knowledge to predict Young's modulus for calcium aluminosilicate glass family in Chapter 2. Last, in Chapter 3, we propose a fully analytical model to link the network topology with glass compositions.
