Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macbeth is among the best-known of William Shakespeare's plays, and is his shortest tragedy, believed to have been written between 1603 and 1606. It is frequently performed at both amateur and professional levels, and has been adapted for opera, film, books, stage and screen. Often regarded as archetypal, the play tells of the dangers of the lust for power and the betrayal of friends. For the plot Shakespeare drew loosely on the historical account of King Macbeth of Scotland by Raphael Holinshed and that by the Scottish philosopher Hector Boece. There are many superstitions centred on the belief the play is somehow "cursed", and many actors will not mention the name of the play aloud, referring to it instead as "The Scottish play".

Book excerpt: Macbeth is a tragedy by William Shakespeare; it is thought to have been first performed in 1606.[a] It dramatises the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake. Of all the plays that Shakespeare wrote during the reign of James I, who was patron of Shakespeare's acting company, Macbeth most clearly reflects the playwright's relationship with his sovereign. It was first published in the Folio of 1623, possibly from a prompt book, and is Shakespeare's shortest tragedy.

Book excerpt: Full text of the original play A great book is highly recommended.Macbeth is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare, and is considered one of his darkest and most powerful works. Set in Scotland, the play creates a corrosive psychological and political impact that is shown when evil is chosen as the way to power. It is believed that this play was written between 1599 and 1606 and most of its history is 1606. The description of the performance, which was probably Shakespeare's play, is the summer of 1606, when Simon Ferman recorded such a play at the Globe Theater. First published in Folio in 1623, probably from a quick book. It was probably written in the time of James I, who was James VI of Scotland before he became King of England in 1603. James was a supporter of Shakespeare's acting company, and of all the plays Shakespeare wrote during James's time, Macbeth clearly reflects the playwright's relationship with the government. Macbeth is Shakespeare's shortest tragedy and tells the story of a brave Scottish general named Macbeth who foretells one of three wizards who will one day become King of Scotland. Macbeth, ambitious and his wife fulfilled, assassinates King Duncan and seizes the throne. He then becomes guilty and paranoid and soon becomes a tyrant because he is forced to commit more murders to protect himself from hostility and suspicion. The bloodbath and the ensuing civil war quickly drag Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the realm of arrogance, madness and death. Shakespeare's source for this catastrophe is the account of Macbeth, King of Scotland, McDowell and Duncan in the Chronicles (1587), the history of England, Scotland and Ireland, which is familiar to Shakespeare and his contemporaries, although the events of the play are very different from the real Macbeth. In the recent scholarship, catastrophic events are usually more closely related to the execution of Henry Garnett for complicity in the 1605 gunpowder scheme. In the world behind the scenes, some believe that the play is cursed and do not mention its title out loud, and instead refer to it as a "Scottish play". For centuries, the game has attracted the most famous actors to the roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. This app is compatible with movies, TV, opera, novels, comic books and other media.

Book excerpt: "A miracle, an instant classic." -- Slavoj Žižek, philosopher The tragedy is done, the tyrant Macbeth dead. The time is free. But for how long? As Macduff pursues dreams of national revival, smaller lives are seeding. In the ruins of Dunsinane, the Porter tries to keep his three young boys safe from the nightmare of history. In a nunnery deep in Birnam Wood, a girl attempts to forget what she lost in war. Flitting between them, a tortured clairvoyant trembles with the knowledge of what's to come. A collaboration between two of the world's most eminent Shakespeare scholars, "Macbeth, Macbeth" is a unique mix of creative fiction and literary criticism that charts a new way of doing both, sparking a whole new world from the embers of Shakespeare's original tragedy. "Macbeth, Macbeth" weaves a thread that enrichens the original classic with the manic energy of Tristram Shandy, the grim intensity of Crime and Punishment, and the existential absurdity of Waiting for Godot. "A thrilling re-imagination of Shakespeare’s darkest play." -- Lucy Bailey, theatre director "Shakespeare, I suspect, would have been delighted." -- Don Paterson, poet Beyond Criticism Editions is the reincarnation of the Beyond Criticism book series, originally published by Bloomsbury and now part of Boiler House Press' own experiments with the radical new forms that literary criticism might take in the 21st century.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2018 Shakespeare’s dark and tragic play retold in a heart-pounding New York Times bestselling thriller from the author of The Snowman and The Thirst. Set in the 1970s in a run-down, rainy industrial town, Jo Nesbo's Macbeth centers around a police force struggling to shed an incessant drug problem. Duncan, chief of police, is idealistic and visionary, a dream to the townspeople but a nightmare for criminals. The drug trade is ruled by two drug lords, one of whom—a master of manipulation named Hecate—has connections with the highest in power, and plans to use them to get his way. Hecate’s plot hinges on steadily, insidiously manipulating Inspector Macbeth: the head of SWAT and a man already susceptible to violent and paranoid tendencies. What follows is an unputdownable story of love and guilt, political ambition, and greed for more, exploring the darkest corners of human nature, and the aspirations of the criminal mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rebecca Reisert's mesmerizing first novel re-imagines Macbeth, Shakespeare's classic tragedy of power and madness, through the eyes of a mysterious young woman on a dangerous quest for vengeance. For the girl called Gilly, life in the wilds of Birnam Wood is little more than a desperate struggle for survival. Seven long years have passed since she was first taken in and sheltered by Nettle and Mad Helga, the hut-dwelling wise-women whose inscrutable powers of alchemy and prophecy are feared and reviled throughout good King Duncan's kingdom. Living under the threat of deadly persecution by witch-hunting villagers, the threesome ekes out a life by peddling potions and elixirs, scavenging for food, and robbing the bloodied corpses of Scotland's battle-scarred hills for precious metals and weapons. But Gilly is haunted by recollections of a much brighter life. She clings to fading memories of a time when she was contented and adored -- until tragedy swept all that happiness away and young Gilly's life was changed forever. I have made my life an arrow, and His heart is my home. I have made my heart a blade, and His heart is my sheath....Obsessed with avenging her loss and putting out the fire that still rages in her heart, Gilly has dedicated herself to destroying Macbeth, the boundlessly ambitious man who took away her childhood, and his goading wife. Disguising herself as a poor servant boy, she insinuates herself into their lives and, as she bears horrified witness to Macbeth's violent path to power, Gilly subtly begins to take a hand in the forces governing his fate. But as the culmination of her revenge draws near, Gilly finds her own life at risk when she confronts the troubling legacy of a long-concealed heritage. The Third Witch is a brilliantly imagined, wonderfully satisfying novel. In a riveting story of ruthlessness and revenge, debut author Rebecca Reisert demonstrates a profound understanding of the Bard's timeless drama -- and of the real-life Macbeth upon whom Shakespeare's incarnation is modeled.
