A native of Iowa, Elliott earned three degrees in Sociology from Northwestern University. In addition to her career as a sociologist, she was a feminist and a pacifist whose occasional criticism of criminal policies in the United States led to the creation of an FBI file. Despite being largely disregarded by her male colleagues, Elliott wrote a wildly successful textbook, Social Disorganization, that published four editions over thirty years. After starting her career at the University of Kansas and working there for twenty years, she moved to Chatham College in Pennsylvania in 1949 where she was appreciated for her singular abilities. Among her many achievements, she was the first nwoman to be elected Presidet of the Society for the Study of Social Problems in 1957.

Book excerpt: This is an intellectual biography of Mabel Agnes Elliott (1898-1990), the first woman to be elected president of a national, professional organization of sociologists, the Society for the Study of Social Problems. It is necessary to write on the lives of the less famous persons within an occupational group because they more often experience the social control mechanisms that more famous individuals do not. This social science project analyzed data from the following sources: university and college archives, personal interviews, books, journal articles, and Elliott's own files from the Northwestern University archives. The findings indicate that while Mabel Elliott was extremely well educated, and very productive in her writing, that she was also the victim of marginalization and isolation within the University of Kansas at Lawrence Sociology Department during her 19 years there. Having written one of the most used textbooks on the subject of social disorganization theory, this volume was later closely paralleled by Robert E.L. Faris who would face no professional sanctions for his lack of citing Elliott's work. This study advances our sociological knowledge of women's history within the academic profession, the marginalization of women in the workplace, and plagiarism and parallelism issues.

Early in the course of this study it became apparent that the most salient distinction to be made among the female inmates was between those who were and those who were not engaged in homosexual behavior in prison, and further, of those who were so involved, between the incumbents of masculine and feminine roles.It has become increasingly apparent that prison behavior is rooted in more than just the conditions of confinement. Unlike their male counterparts who establish the so-called inmate code, women prisoners suffer intensely from the loss of affectional relationships and form homosexual liaisons as the primary foundation of their social organization. The great majority of homosexually involved inmates have their first affair in prison, returning to heterosexual roles outside prison.Women's Prison is a revealing study of social structure and homosexuality for sociologists; of vital interest to social workers, parole officers and chaplains dealing with female inmates as well as penologists and criminologists; and provocative reading for the non-specialist.
