Lyrical Ballads, two collections of poems by William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge are generally considered to have marked the beginning of the English Romantic movement in literature. The immediate effect on critics was modest, but they became and remain a landmark, changing the course of English literature and poetry. Most of the poems in the 1798 edition were written by Wordsworth, with Coleridge contributing only five poems to the collection, including one of his most famous works, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner". A second edition was published in 1800, in which Wordsworth included additional poems and a preface detailing the pair's avowed poetical principles. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 - 1834) was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets. He wrote the poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, as well as the major prose work Biographia Literaria. William Wordsworth (1770 -1850) was a major English Romantic poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped to launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their joint publication Lyrical Ballads (1798). Book excerpt: In 'Lyrical Ballads and Other Poems of Coleridge & Wordsworth,' readers are presented with a seminal collection that steered English literature into the passionate age of Romanticism. The ensemble, featured in first and second edition form, encapsulates the raw spirit of the era, embracing nature, emotion, and imagination as literary cornerstones. Wordsworth's contributions reflect quintessential romantic elements with a focus on the beauty and moral epiphanies drawn from the mundane. On the other hand, Coleridge's work, including his venerated 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,' conveys darker, more complex Gothic hues within its innovative metrics and rhythm, adding substantial depth to the collaboration. The collection is further enhanced by critical essays and notes expounding on their novel poetic principles, thus making the text not only a creative triumph but also a theoretical treatise. William Wordsworth, a vanguard of the Romantic movement, alongside Samuel Taylor Coleridge, his equally esteemed counterpart, provides us with textual evidence of his intrinsic connection to the natural world, which heavily influenced his literary output. In the wake of the Industrial Revolution, their combined effort emerged as a poignant encapsulation of the era's sentiment, championing the individual's emotional experience against societal modernization. Their backgrounds suffused with radical political thought, natural observation, and existential meditation coalesce into the verses presented, portraying a revolutionary departure from the didactic poetic norms of the 18th century. 'Lyrical Ballads and Other Poems of Coleridge & Wordsworth' is an indispensable volume for enthusiasts and scholars of English Romanticism. The book offers a fascinating investigation into the early evolution of one of literature's most influential movements. It behooves those seeking to comprehend the origins of modern poetic expression to delve into this pioneering work. Moreover, the addition of the authors' own literary analysis provides readers with an invaluable glimpse into the minds behind the movement, thereby enriching the reading experience with historical and intellectual context. As an articulation of Romantic ideals and an exemplar of poetic innovation, this text remains a cornerstone for anyone interested in the enduring power of poetic thought.

Book excerpt: Lyrical Ballads, with a Few Other Poems is a collection of poems by William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, first published in 1798 and generally considered to have marked the beginning of the English Romantic movement in literature. The immediate effect on critics was modest, but it became and remains a landmark, changing the course of English literature and poetry.ContentWordsworth and Coleridge set out to overturn what they considered the priggish, learned, and highly sculpted forms of 18th-century English poetry and to make poetry accessible to the average person via verse written in common, everyday language. They emphasize the vitality of the living voice used by the poor to express their reality. This language also helps assert the universality of human emotions. Even the title of the collection recalls rustic forms of art - the word "lyrical" links the poems with the ancient rustic bards and lends an air of spontaneity, while "ballads" are an oral mode of storytelling used by the common people. In the 'Advertisement' included in the 1798 edition, Wordsworth explained his poetical concept: The majority of the following poems are to be considered as experiments. They were written chiefly with a view to ascertain how far the language of conversation in the middle and lower classes of society is adapted to the purpose of poetic pleasure. If the experiment with vernacular language was not enough of a departure from the norm, the focus on simple, uneducated country people as the subject of poetry was a signal shift to modern literature. One of the main themes of "Lyrical Ballads" is the return to the original state of nature, in which people led a purer and more innocent existence. Wordsworth subscribed to Rousseau's belief that humanity was essentially good but was corrupted by the influence of society. This may be linked with the sentiments spreading through Europe just prior to the French Revolution...William Wordsworth (7 April 1770 - 23 April 1850) was a major English Romantic poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped to launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their joint publication Lyrical Ballads (1798).Wordsworth's magnum opus is generally considered to be The Prelude, a semi-autobiographical poem of his early years that he revised and expanded a number of times. It was posthumously titled and published, before which it was generally known as "the poem to Coleridge."Wordsworth was Britain's poet laureate from 1843 until his death from pleurisy on 23 April 1850...Samuel Taylor Coleridge ( 21 October 1772 - 25 July 1834) was an English poet, literary critic, philosopher and theologian who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets. He wrote the poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and "Kubla Khan," as well as the major prose work Biographia Literaria. His critical work, especially on William Shakespeare, was highly influential, and he helped introduce German idealist philosophy to English-speaking culture. Coleridge coined many familiar words and phrases, including suspension of disbelief. He had a major influence on Ralph Waldo Emerson and on American transcendentalism.Throughout his adult life Coleridge had crippling bouts of anxiety and depression; it has been speculated that he had bipolar disorder, which had not been defined during his lifetime. He was physically unhealthy, which may have stemmed from a bout of rheumatic fever and other childhood illnesses. He was treated for these conditions with laudanum, which fostered a lifelong opium addiction. Coleridge

So when two soon-to-be luminaries of the English Romantic movement came together to produce a book of their poems, the result was inevitable. 'Lyrical Ballads' by William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge was a slow burner for readers, but grew to be lauded as a landmark piece of work, taking English writing in a new direction. Wordsworth does most of the heavy lifting by contributing the majority of the poems, but Coleridge's efforts include the famous 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. The pair aimed to prick the bubble of what they felt was a snobbish approach to 18th century poetry. In 'Lyrical Ballads', they use everyday language, add the voices of the poor and focus on the original state of nature. The result is an accessible, original collection that remains fresh to this day. William Wordsworth (1770-1850) was an English poet and a pioneer of the Romantic Age in English literature. His first collections, 'An Evening Walk' and 'Descriptive Sketches', were published in 1793. His career took off after he moved to the Lake District with his sister Dorothy. Wordsworth produced countless poems, often on the themes of death and grief, including the first version of his epic 'The Prelude'. He was Poet Laureate from 1843 until his death in 1850. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) was a founder of the Romantic Movement in English literature and one of the Lake Poets. He wrote literary criticism, including of William Shakespeare's work, and the major prose book 'Biographia Literaria'. His best-known works were the poems 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' and 'Kubla Khan'.

Book excerpt: Lyrical Ballads is a poetic collection by William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, first published in 1798 and marked as the start of the English Romantic movement. Here we published the two volumes of the second edition from 1800, in which Wordsworth included additional poems and a preface detailing the pair's avowed poetical principles. The immediate effect of the 1798 volume was modest, but over time it has become a landmark and changed the course of English literature and poetry. Wordsworth contributed most of the poems to this volume but those by Coleridge include perhaps his most famous - "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." Wordsworth and Coleridge set out to radically change the stuffy, learned and highly structured forms of 18th century English poetry in an effort to bring the true beauty of poetry to ordinary people by writing in everyday language. An emphasis was placed on the vitality of the conversational wording that the poor use to express their own lives. Using this language also helps assert the universality of human emotions. Even the title brings to mind rustic forms of art - the word "lyrical" links the poems with the ancient rustic bards and lends an air of spontaneity, while "ballads" are an oral mode of storytelling used by ordinary people.
