Book excerpt: The term ‘lyric’ has evolved, been revised, redefined and contested over the centuries. In this fascinating introduction, Scott Brewster: traces the history of the term from its classical origins through the early modern, Romantic and Victorian periods and up to the twenty-first century demonstrates the influence of lyric on poetic practice, literature, music and other popular cultural forms uses three aspects -- the lyric ‘self’, love and desire and the relationship between lyric, poetry and performance -- as focal points for further discussion not only charts the history of lyric theory and practice but re-examines assumptions about the lyric form in the context of recent theoretical accounts of poetic discourse. Offering clarity and structure to this often intense and emotive field, Lyric offers essential insights for students of literature, performance, music and cultural studies.

Harmony retreated from the limelight and lives a modest life in the suburbs with her new husband, an ex–child star and recovering drug addict. Harmony wants nothing more than to be a wife and mother, but when news of her mother’s sudden death forces Harmony and her sisters back together, she will have to confront a painful past that she tried desperately to leave behind. Melody abandoned her sisters for a solo career and is now a wealthy mega-star who tours the world, buys whatever her heart desires, and lives in the spotlight. Will the Love sisters let their past hurt, lies, and deceit destroy them, or will they manage to put it all behind them and be a family once and for all?
Book Synopsis Memory in German Romanticism by : Christopher R. Clason
Download or read book Memory in German Romanticism written by Christopher R. Clason and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memory in German Romanticism treats memory as a core element in the production and reception of German art and literature of the Romantic era. The contributors explore the artistic expression of memory under the categories of imagination, image, and reception. Romantic literary aesthetics raises the subjective imagination to a level of primary importance for the creation of art. It goes beyond challenging reason and objectivity, two leading intellectual faculties of eighteenth-century Enlightenment, and instead elevates subjective invention to form and sustain memory and imagination. Indeed, memory and imagination, both cognitive functions, seek to assemble the elements of one’s own experience, either directed toward the past (memory) or toward the future (imagination), coherently into a narrative. And like memories, images hold the potential to elicit charged emotional responses; those responses live on through time, becoming part of the spatial and temporal reception of the artist and their work. While imagination generates and images trigger and capture memories, reception creates a temporal-spatial context for art, organizing it and rendering it "memorable," both for good and for bad. Thus, through the categories of imagination, image, and reception, this volume explores the phenomenon of German Romantic memory from different perspectives and in new contexts.
Download or read book Amphion written by Leah Middlebrook and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024-11-27 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reintroduction to the myth of Amphion, recovering an overlooked sphere of lyric tradition. Amphion is the figure in Greek mythology who played so skillfully on a lyre that stones moved of their own accord to build walls for Thebes. While Amphion still presides over music and architecture, he was once fundamental to the concept of lyric poetry. Amphion figured the human power to inspire action, creating and undoing polities by means of language. In contrast to the individual inspiration we associate with the better-known Orpheus, Amphion represents the relentless, often violent, play of harmony and disorder in human social life. In this wide-ranging study, Leah Middlebrook introduces readers to Amphion-inspired poetics and lyrics and traces the tradition of the Amphionic from the Renaissance through modernist and postmodern poetry and translation from the Hispanic, Anglophone, French, Italian, and ancient Roman worlds. Amphion makes a significant contribution to scholarship on the connection between poetry and politics and the history of the lyric, offering an account well-suited to our times.

Book Synopsis Beyond Intimacy by : Christina Karageorgou-Bastea
Download or read book Beyond Intimacy written by Christina Karageorgou-Bastea and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2023-03-15 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ethos of poetry and its social efficacy cannot be underestimated in the quest for a fair society. The works of three contemporary Mexican poets – Abigael Bohórquez, Myriam Moscona, and Gloria Gervitz – offer models for examining important philosophical and literary questions that explore the relationship between art and the enactment of justice. Beyond Intimacy returns lyric poetry to the centre of struggles for justice within concrete historical frameworks, highlighting gender, ethnic, and cultural tensions. Through an analysis of works by these three poets, Christina Karageorgou-Bastea reveals the far-reaching social transcendence of poetry; she shows that lyric poetry invites a public dialogue where queer pariahs model citizenship, a dying language guards and transmits tradition, and the end of motherhood is the cusp in the struggle for woman’s freedom. The radicalization of intimacy, the relationship par excellence between self and other on which poetic interaction is based, has the power to dismantle deeply rooted hierarchies within art and society. Karageorgou-Bastea explores poetry’s potential for justice through different modes of intimacy including desire, filiation, and mourning. Meeting on the grounds of their aspiration to harmony, lyricism, and justice-making lead the way to social equity and fairness in Beyond Intimacy.

Book Synopsis The Human Mind Inside by : Joseph Jean-Claude
Download or read book The Human Mind Inside written by Joseph Jean-Claude and published by Quantometrix. This book was released on 2014-07-29 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book that goes beyond speculation and hypotheses about the mind and presents for the first time a clear layout of the organization and operation of thought processes. This book finally takes the mind out of the black box and sheds light on a stunning array of mental phenomena including mental disorders and paranormal behavior. An easy-to-follow exposition despite the complexity of the subject. This is not your usual speculative book about the mind with cryptic language that only the initiated few may understand. The author uses clear concepts and simple language with no scary idioms to delve into the organization and dynamics of thought processes from an overarching unified model. Whether you happen to be a learned psychologist looking for granular interpretation of human thoughts and emotions with their correlated processes, or a neuroscience researcher or developer seeking better clues and deeper insights in mentation, or simply a parent dealing with the disparaging commotion of a mentally-ill relative, this book proposes sensible and satisfying answers never before available. As elusive and obscure as matters of mind may appear, this exposé eloquently shows that they remain completely ruled by rationalism and notably mathematical formalism. The author’s vintage is a model built on a parent function to the well-known Gaussian with the help of novel philosophical principles and physics constructs both directly emanating from the function. From that standpoint, the author forcefully endeavors to take the architecture and operation of mind out of the black box, shedding light on a stunningly large array of mental phenomena, from human character to mental disorders to paranormal behavior. To the laymen with interest in the subject: this text, indeed an easy-to-follow exposition, will help you better understand the partitioning and inner workings of your own thoughts and emotions and their process flows as well. Most interestingly, it firmly establishes the basis for individual character giving you the means to predict or cope with reactions and behavior coming from mates, friends and co-workers. A fascinating book!
