Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1753 Robert Dodsley published Designs by Mr. R. Bentley, for Six Poems by Mr. T. Gray. Sponsored by Horace Walpole, this luxurious quarto was the first major aesthetic expression of the Strawberry Hill circle and a landmark in English book illustration. Kenneth Clarke called it "the most graceful monument to Gothic Rococo." Its witty interplay between illustration and text anticipated Blake, who studied it some thirty years later. Among its poems is Gray's famous Elegy Written in a Courtly Church-Yard. Loftus Jestin offers a facsimile of Designs (out of print since 1786) and a full-length interdisciplinary study of the collaboration of Bentley, Gray, and Walpole that produced this extraordinary book. He shows the way poems and illustration at once complement, compete with and invigorate each other, and he examines Strawberry Hill. Walpole's house at Twickenham, where Bentley's genius flourished. He also considers the interplay of the sister arts in the work of Hogarth, Kent, and Pine, and surveys the tastes, friendships, economics, and politics that helped shape the development of Bentley's book illustrations.

Book excerpt: No ancient culture has left us more tantalizing glimpses of its music than that of the Greeks, whose art and literature continually speak to us of the role of music, its power, and its significance to their society. In this book two scholars--one of music and one of classics--join together to explore the musical life of ancient Greece, focusing on the Greek stringed instruments and, in particular, on the all-important lyre family. Book excerpt: On 15 October 1838, the body of a thirty-six-year-old woman was found in Cape Coast Castle, West Africa, a bottle of Prussic acid in her hand. She was one of the most famous English poets of her day: Letitia Elizabeth Landon, known by her initials 'L.E.L.' What was she doing in Africa? Was her death an accident, as the inquest claimed? Or had she committed suicide, or even been murdered? To her contemporaries, she was an icon, hailed as the 'female Byron', admired by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Heinrich Heine, the young Bronte sisters and Edgar Allan Poe. However, she was also a woman with secrets, the mother of three illegitimate children whose existence was subsequently wiped from the record. After her death, she became the subject of a cover-up which is only now unravelling. Too scandalous for her reputation to survive, Letitia Landon was a brilliant woman who made a Faustian pact in a ruthless world. She embodied the post-Byronic era, the 'strange pause' between the Romantics and the Victorians. This new investigation into the mystery of her life, work and death excavates a whole lost literary culture.

Book excerpt: Lying Bodies explores how to survive with invisible, non-normative identities by focusing on literally 'invisible' differences. The first half of the book attempts a theoretical account of the self in the field of vision, drawing on psychoanalytic theories of the formation of the self. In order for the survival of the self with a visual image that both enables and threatens it, the book proposes the strategy of 'the lying body', which combines mimicry with equivocality. The second half of the book demonstrates possible forms of 'the lying body' through an analysis of specific examples of cultural practices, including works by artists Cindy Sherman and Morimura Yasumasa, as well as the claim of invisible sexual differences by feminine-looking lesbians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist writers in British Romanticism often developed alternatives to linear time. Viewing time as a system of social control, writers like Mary Wollstonecraft, Anna Barbauld, and Mary Shelley wrote about current events as if they possessed knowledge from the future. Fracture Feminism explores this tradition with a perspective informed by Lacanian psychoanalysis and Derridean deconstruction, showing how time can be imagined to contain a hidden fracture—and how that fracture, when claimed as a point of view, could be the basis for an emancipatory politics. Arguing that the period's most radical experiments in undoing time stemmed from the era's discourses of gender and women's rights, Fracture Feminism asks: to what extent could women "belong" to their historical moment, given their political and social marginalization? How would voices from the future interrupt the ordinary procedures of political debate? What if utopia were understood as a time rather than a place, and its time were already inside the present?

Book excerpt: I had fun writing this book. I would get started and then put it down, only to lose it and start over from the beginning. I also found myself thinking about words I had heard and trying to find a sound alike that would be used. Not all turned out; they either were wrong entirely or for spelling. With the help of friends and family, I had some words repeated, but every now and then, a new word would come with a sound alike to follow. Soon I had a lot of words. It is interesting to find out and know the words and especially the meanings. However, I also said to my family that once you start thinking about sound alike, it is hard to stop, especially when going to sleep at first. After a while, it was not hard to sleep. I had a friend who said, when she and her family first got to this country, she had trouble with the words their, there, and they’re. All three of these words gave her trouble. She is not the only whom I have talked to that has had trouble.
