Download or read book Hail Mary written by Frankie de la Cretaz and published by Bold Type Books. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The groundbreaking story of the National Women’s Football League, and the players whose spirit, rivalries, and tenacity changed the legacy of women’s sports forever. In 1967, a Cleveland promoter recruited a group of women to compete as a traveling football troupe. It was conceived as a gimmick—in the vein of the Harlem Globetrotters—but the women who signed up really wanted to play. And they were determined to win. Hail Mary chronicles the highs and lows of the National Women’s Football League, which took root in nineteen cities across the US over the course of two decades. Drawing on new interviews with former players from the Detroit Demons, the Toledo Troopers, the LA Dandelions, and more, Hail Mary brings us into the stadiums where they broke records, the small-town lesbian bars where they were recruited, and the backrooms where the league was formed, championed, and eventually shuttered. In an era of vibrant second wave feminism and Title IX activism, the athletes of the National Women’s Football League were boisterous pioneers on and off the field: you’ll be rooting for them from start to finish.
Download or read book Lyndsey written by Alan Paisey and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lyndsey Pickford emulated the many stalwarts of old as well as those of contemporary times who set out for London to make their fortune. She was well educated and from a respectable family in the West Country. Breaking the ties of her schooling days, she first took a lowly job on banana ships plying their commercial trade from Bristol to the West Indies. However, her heart had been pledged to London. As a member of the fair sex, she fancied her chances in taking up the recent opportunity of employment offered by the Metropolitan police during the1920s. She had been undoubtedly influenced by the Bluestocking Movement and the extension of the vote for women. The time was ripe for her to do what she really wanted to do - exercise her love for logic in her job and defy the penalty placed on women who married in the newly introduced service in London. But who could have predicted the perils, adventure, excitement and love that she would find on the way to that private fulfilment?
Download or read book Girl in the Dark written by Anna Lyndsey and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haunting, lyrical, unforgettable, Girl in the Dark is a brave new memoir of a life without light. Anna Lyndsey was young and ambitious and worked hard; she had just bought an apartment; she was falling in love. Then what started as a mild intolerance to certain kinds of artificial light developed into a severe sensitivity to all light. Now, at the worst times, Anna is forced to spend months on end in a blacked-out room, where she loses herself in audiobooks and elaborate word games in an attempt to ward off despair. During periods of relative remission, she can venture out cautiously at dawn and dusk into a world that, from the perspective of her cloistered existence, is filled with remarkable beauty. And through it all there is Pete, her love and her rock, without whom her loneliness seems boundless. One day Anna had an ordinary life, and then the unthinkable happened. But even impossible lives, she learns, endure. Girl in the Dark is a tale of an unimaginable fate that becomes a transcendent love story. It brings us to an extraordinary place from which we emerge to see the light and the world anew.

Book Synopsis Holistic Sleep Coaching: Gentle Alternatives to Sleep Training for Health and Childcare Professionals by : Lyndsey Hookway
Download or read book Holistic Sleep Coaching: Gentle Alternatives to Sleep Training for Health and Childcare Professionals written by Lyndsey Hookway and published by . This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lyndsey Hookway's Holistic Sleep Coaching is the book parent-child health professionals have been waiting for regarding infants', children's, and parents' sleep! The comprehensive content is comprised of an exhaustive review of the sleep literature, but it is written in a reader-friendly discussion format. (References are cited in text with the complete reference list in APA alphabetical style at the end.) I appreciate Hookway's evidence-based approach with its emphasis on human sleep biology. Yet her words constantly model sensitivity and empathy for both babies/children and their parents who live in our current cultural landscape of isolated nuclear families dependent on two incomes and often miles from physical support." -Karen Kerkhoff Gromada, MSN, RN, IBCLC, FILCA Author: Mothering Multiples: Breastfeeding and Caring for Twins or More "There is much to like in Hookway's book, including her clear understanding of the link between breastfeeding and sleeping, and the importance of sleep for parental mental health. Educating practitioners about normal infant sleep is an important task. Too many are only aware of extinction methods for addressing parental sleep concerns: with Holistic Sleep Coaching Hookway is laying the groundwork for the development of a more evidence-based and systematic approach." -Helen Ball, Professor of Anthropology, Director of the Durham Infancy & Sleep Centre (DISC), Founder of the Baby Sleep Info Source (Basis) "As a breastfeeding professional, I was curious and hopeful when I began reading Lyndsey Hookway's book, Holistic Sleep Coaching. One of the biggest worries for most new parents is how lack of sleep will impact their family, particularly within the context of breastfeeding. This book is not about training a baby how to sleep, or using dangerous methods that can comprise the breastfeeding relationship. This book IS about understanding how sleep works and how to use that knowledge to understand one's baby. It enables parents to support the uniqueness of their child, continue breastfeeding effectively, and identify how to create the most supportive environment possible to optimize sleep within their distinct family. I would definitely recommend this book as a MUST for new parents before their baby arrives, as well as an integral resource for all perinatal professionals! -Laurel Wilson, IBCLC, RLC, CLE, CLD, CCCECo-Author of The Attachment Pregnancy and The Greatest Pregnancy Ever Infants are probably sleeping no differently now than they were 1000 years ago. However, parenting has changed. We are dealing with the paradox of parenting information overload, coupled with time-poverty. Parents know more than ever about the importance of love, attachment and security to young children. They may know about good nutrition, stress management, toxins, skin to skin, breastfeeding, one-to-one time, emotion coaching and organic food. Parents are bombarded with appliances that are supposed to make their lives easier, and yet end up confused about what is really necessary. At the same time, modern parents are leading busy, expensive lives, and have jobs that they love or need. And within all this, their babies are still sleeping the same as they always have. Some sleep experts are quick to suggest quick fixes to lengthen infant sleep, but there is growing concern that techniques such as extinction may have negative outcomes for infants as well as being stressful for parents. Holistic Sleep Coaching is a multi-dimensional approach that looks at the big picture and recognises that babies' needs are not just physical but psychological, emotional and relational. Holistic Sleep Coaching provides an evidence-based overview of how to optimise sleep without leaving babies and children to cry for health and child care professionals.

Book Synopsis The Prescription-to-Prison Pipeline by : Michelle Smirnova
Download or read book The Prescription-to-Prison Pipeline written by Michelle Smirnova and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-23 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Prescription-to-Prison Pipeline Michelle Smirnova argues that the ongoing opioid drug epidemic is the result of an endless cycle in which suffering is medicalized and drug use is criminalized. Drawing on interviews with eighty incarcerated individuals in Missouri correctional institutions, Smirnova shows how contradictions in medical practices, social ideals, and legal policies disproportionately criminalize the poor for their social condition. This criminalization further exacerbates and perpetuates drug addiction and poverty. Tracing the processes by which social issues are constructed as biomedical ones that necessitate pharmacological intervention, Smirnova highlights how inequitable surveillance, policing, and punishment of marginalized populations intensify harms associated with both treatment and punishment, especially given that the distinctions between the two have become blurred. By focusing on the stories of people whose pain and pharmaceutical treatment led to incarceration, Smirnova challenges the binary of individual and social problems, effectively exploring how the conceptualization, diagnosis, and treatment of substance use may exacerbate outcomes such as relapse, recidivism, poverty, abuse, and death.
