Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Luther's War, the old man Luther recounts his boyhood years and his years as a Confederate Soldier. In 1864, at age 18, mortally sick with the fevers, he decided to quit the War. He vows that "if'n I'm goin' to die, it'll be on my way home." Home was several hundred miles away. Now he tells his stories about the journey and his return, on Ole Mule and the black stallion Thunder, to his home in Stewart County, Tennessee. He recollects places and people along the way. Mainly he recollects the women he met. Some he loved. All had something to teach him about himself and how to be a man. Back at home, he starts his new life, encountering his mother Harriet; Nadine, who didn't wait for his return; and his true love Narcissa, whom he marries at age 21, in 1867. Luther's Women is the sequel to Luther's War (Xlibris, Philadelphia, 2005). Dr. Morris is Professor Emeritus, the University of Iowa. His previous published works are professional and scientific. This is his first work of fiction. He is a native of Stewart County, Tennessee, and lives now in Tucson.

Book excerpt: Sent to live with an aunt and uncle at four, Luther was a farm boy with little schooling and not much future. He joined the Confederate Army in 1861 at 15, and left the War in 1864 at 18. Now an old man, he tells his stories about those years. Although he rode with the cavalry under the notorious Nathan Bedford Forrest and the daring John Stanley Morgan in their raids in Tennessee and Kentucky, he was never an eager shootin' and fightin' soldier. He found his place in helping with the sick, the wounded, and the dead. The reality of the War brings him to question its rightful purpose and whether he can in good faith continue to fight for the South and all that it stands for. When his little red mare was shot from under him, he was forced to join the army of foot soldiers on the arduous march to Richmond. He was then taken mortally sick with the fevers, several hundred miles from home. He decided to quit the War, vowing that "if'n I'm goin' to die, it'll be on my way home." He continues his stories about his journey home to Stewart County in Luther's Women (Xlibris, Philadelphia, 2005). Dr. Morris is Professor Emeritus, the University of Iowa. His previous published works are professional and scientific. This is his first work of fiction. He is a native of Stewart County, Tennessee, and lives now in Tucson.

Book excerpt: Including contributions from leading scholars in the field from both Australia and North America, this collection explores diverse approaches to writing the lives of historians and ways of assessing the importance of doing so. Beginning with the writing of autobiographies by historians, the volume then turns to biographical studies, both of historians whose writings were in some sense nation-defining and those who may be regarded as having had a major influence on defining the discipline of history. The final section explores elements of collective biography, linking these to the formation of historical networks. A concluding essay by Barbara Caine offers a critical appraisal of the study of historians’ biographies and autobiographies to date, and maps out likely new directions for future work. Clio’s Lives is a very good scholarly collection that advances the study of autobiography and biography within the writing of history itself, taking theoretical questions in significant new directions. The contributors are well known and highly respected in the history profession and write with an insight and intellectual energy that will ensure the book has considerable impact. They examine cutting-edge issues about the writing of history at the personal level through autobiography and biography in diverse and innovative ways. Together the writers have provided reflective chapters that will be widely read for their impressive theoretical advances as well as being inspirational for new entrants to the disciplinary area. — Patricia Grimshaw, University of Melbourne Clio’s Lives brings together a most interesting and varied cast of contributors. Its chapters contain sophisticated and well-penned ruminations on the uses of biography and autobiography among historians. These are clearly connected with the general themes of the volume. This delightfully mixed bag makes very good reading and, as well, will serve as a substantial contribution to the study of the biography and autobiography. — Eric Richards, Flinders University

Book excerpt: The Chinese Catholic Church traces its living roots back to the late sixteenth century and its historical roots back even further, to the Yuan dynasty. This book explores paintings and sculptures of the Virgin Mary and the communities that produced them over several centuries. It argues for the emergence of distinctly Chinese Catholic identities as artistic representations of the Virgin Mary, at different times and in different places, absorbed and in turn influenced representations of Chinese figures from Guanyin to the Empress Dowager. At other times indigenous styles have been diluted by Western influences—following the influx of European missionaries in the nineteenth century, for example, or with globalization in recent years. The book engages with history, theology and art, and draws on imagery and archival photographs that have been largely neglected. As a study of the social and cultural histories of communities that have survived over many centuries, this book offers a new view of Catholicism in China—one that sees its history as more than simply a cycle of persecution and resistance. Fr. Jeremy Clarke, SJ, is an Australian Province Jesuit teaching as an assistant professor in the History Department of Boston College. He is also a school visitor in the Australian Center for China in the World at the Australian National University, Canberra.
