Book excerpt: Excerpt from Luther and Lutherdom, Vol. 1 of 1: From Original Sources It still remains only too true that, on the side of Protes tants, in their instructions and elsewhere, Catholic doctrine and establishments are systematically distorted. It was this melancholy fact that lent to my pen the sharp tone which was taken so ill in my preface. In these prudish times, however, it is worth while sparing the weak nerves of many a reader, all the more so as the facts anyhow speak loudly enough of them selves. The very reception oi my book again confirms, in classic fashion, the uncritical, undiscriminating partisanship of by far the greater part of our opponents. Book excerpt: Luther is a six volume biography of Martin Luther, German professor of theology and the Church reformer, famous for his Ninety-five Theses of 1517 and recognized as a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation. The aim of the work was to present accurate historical and psychological portrait of Luther's personality, which is still a mystery from many points of view. While presenting Luther's psychological picture the author chooses to do so in Luther's own words, analyzing his writings and letters. Analyzing Luther's writings he opts not to write about Luther's teachings and the history of dogma, but reaches deeper in his endeavor to supply an exact portrayal of Luther as a whole, which should emphasize various aspects of his mind and character.

Book excerpt: Volume 1 of The Annotated Luther series contains writings that defined the roots of reform set in motion by Martin Luther, beginning with the Ninety-Five Theses (1517) through The Freedom of a Christian (1520). Included are treatises, letters, and sermons written from 1517 to 1520, which set the framework for key themes in all of Luthers later works. Also included are documents that reveal Luthers earliest confrontations with Rome and his defense of views and perspectives that led to his excommunication by Leo X in 1520. These documents display a Luther grounded in late medieval theology and its peculiar issues, trained in the latest humanist methods of the Renaissance, and, most especially, showing sensitivity toward the pastoral consequences of theological positions and church practice.

Book excerpt: Luther's Works: The American Edition, published by Concordia and Fortress Press between 1955 and 1986, comprises fifty-five volumes. These are a selection representing only about a third of Luther's works in the Latin and German of the standard Weimar Edition, not including the German Bible. Luther treats Isaiah and his message as one still relevant for modern times, in fact for all time. The lesson is that God in Jesus Christ comes to the rescue of God's people in God's own good time, just as God did to the nation and government of the Jews in Isaiah's time. Meanwhile, God's people are to await God's help in complete confidence and not rely on self-help and on alliances with other men. The great danger then and now, however, lies in humankind's rebellion against God's way, for humankind is naturally impatient about waiting for God to do all things well. To God's invitation that humankind find strength "in quietness and in trust," humankind is always under temptation to respond: "No, we will speed upon horses!" Luther bids us learn from Isaiah that we are helped and protected by God as the people of Israel were and that we are also chastened like them when this is necessary. This volume contains lectures on Isaiah, chapters 1 through 39.

These are a selection representing only about a third of Luther's works in the Latin and German of the standard Weimar Edition, not including the German Bible. The Reformer's lectures on the First Book of Moses must be numbered among the great works in the field of exegetical writing. Unlike many scholars who have undertaken to expound Genesis, Luther is not afraid to adhere strictly to the letter of what Moses wrote. He does not indulge in wild allegories. He does not tear words or sentences out of their context. He knows that Genesis is the Word of God. Therefore he approaches the book with awe and reverence. His is a genuinely Christian commentary. This volume discusses Genesis 1-5, including the Creation, the Fall, the First Brothers, and the line of Adam.

These are a selection representing only about a third of Luther's works in the Latin and German of the standard Weimar Edition, not including the German Bible. Just as St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians has been called the Magna Carta of Christian freedom, so the Lectures on Galatians delivered by Martin Luther in 1531 and published for the first time in 1535 have been hailed as the great Reformer's Magna Carta of Christian liberty. In Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners John Bunyan (1628-88), who was languishing in jail, told how a long time before this "the God, in whose hands are all days and ways, did cast into my hand, one day, a book of Martin Luther; it was his comment on the Galatians...this, methinks, I must let fall before all men, I do prefer this book of Martin Luther upon the Galatians, excepting the Holy Bible, before all books that ever I have seen, as most fit for a wounded conscience." Luther treasured St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians. Luther's Lectures on the Galatians, like Paul's letters, contain many distinctively autobiographical statements. In more than one respect these two men of God were kindred spirits. Both inveighed sharply and vigorously against their adversaries, but they also never lost sight of the Christian love that permeates the words of those who bring God's message of salvation to their fellow men.

Book excerpt: This is an English translation of a German polemical work by Fr. Heinrich Denifle, O.P. against the theology of Martin Luther, especially Luther's ideas on monasticism, marriage, baptism, and various other Catholic doctrines. It appears to have been controversial during its author's own lifetime as the author responds to criticism of his work in his Foreword to the second edition (pages v-xxix).
