Book excerpt: Second in a fresh new series with a screenplay format featuring the irrepressibly lovable Lulu Harrison, a down-to-earth girl in Twinkle Town, and her diaper-wearing dog. Lulu's plans for a family-only Hawaiian luau are crushed under her sister's Fourth of July blockbuster bash, until Lulu decides this Independence Day she's gong to stand up for herself. Lights! Camera! ACTION! If only real life were like the movies. Instead, the Harrison family's fabulous Hawaiian vacation has fallen apart, thanks to Lulu's parents' massive blockbuster film shoot. Their tightly-scheduled family time has been taken over by extra time on the set—and they're totally missing out on the real Hawaii. Lulu decides to teach her family the meaning of ohana, but her genius plans are seriously backfiring. (She didn't mean to unleash a rampaging pug onto her parents' movie set. Oops!) Can Lulu get her family back together, or will her exploits push them further apart? Praise for Lulu in La La Land: "Fun, infectious humor and satisfying, light storytelling."—School Library Journal

Book excerpt: What you are about to read is a powerful little book, a pamphlet, really, a rant in actuality, laced with anger, bitter disappointment, vengeance and righteousness, yet remarkably courageous and candid for its time and subject, and clearly empowering to its extraordinary author, one Jean O'Hara, the notorious Honolulu Harlot.

Book excerpt: Honolulu Lulu Honolulu Lulu--the third in the Big Huna Series, is outrageously funny and the wildest yet--with a cast of characters right out of Oliver Twist. In the sun-drenched paradise of Waikiki, a darker truth lurks beneath the surface. A serial killer stalks the luxury hotels, leaving investigators baffled by the victims' seemingly random selection and the horrid publicity that is growing exponentially by the day. Meanwhile, as the body count rises, a trio of pint-sized bank robbers, wearing black pygmy masks, pull off a daring heist and get away clean. Enter Big Huna, Chief Inspector for the Hawaiian State Police. Tasked with investigating both high-profile cases, he navigates a world of shocking contrasts, from the glamorous hotel scene to the gritty underbelly of Waikiki. As the two investigations converge, a chilling truth emerges. Prepare for a wild ride filled with unexpected twists, dark humor, and the gritty underbelly of paradise. Honolulu Lulu is a thrilling tale that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Book excerpt: Forewords by Paul R. Weissich and William S. Merwin The only native palms in Hawai‘i, loulu are among the Islands’ most distinctive plants. Several of the 24 recognized species are rare and endangered and all make handsome and appropriate ornamentals to adorn gardens and landscapes with their dramatic foliage, colorful flower clusters, and conspicuous fruits. In this volume, Donald Hodel shares his expertise on loulu, having traveled extensively throughout Hawai‘i to research and photograph nearly all the species in their native habitat. In the course of his work, he described and named three loulu that were new to science. Each of the 24 species is treated in detail and this book is handsomely illustrated with more than 200 color photographs that clearly show leaves, flower stalks, fruits, and habitat. Chapters on loulu history, botany, ecology, conservation, uses, and propagation and culture provide essential background information for readers, whatever their level of interest or expertise. In the appendices, they will find a concise summary of loulu, lists of species by island, and an illustrated compendium of exotic, naturalized palms of Hawai‘i and relatives of loulu found throughout the South Pacific. As interest in growing and conserving native Hawaiian plants surges while their numbers and habitat continue to decline, Loulu: The Hawaiian Palm will be valued as one of the most comprehensive and thoroughly illustrated treatments of these exceptional plants.

Book excerpt: In 1893, Reverend Shigefusa Kanda, a graduate of Doshisha Theological School, came to Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii as a missionary to Japanese immigrants on the plantation. He built a church, founded the first Japanese language school in Hawaii, and defended the rights of the Japanese laborers. In 1898 he married Sue Tanimura. They moved to Wailuku, Maui where, in 1911, they founded a unique boarding school, the Kanda Home, for unfortunate Japanese girls. As described in this book, Mrs. Kanda vigorously educated these children to become good U.S. citizens and Christians, despite encountering considerable social and financial hardship. Graduates of the Kanda Home became leaders in the Japanese community and have contributed to the development of modern Hawaii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many place names are there in the Hawaiian Islands? Even a rough estimate is impossible. Hawaiians named taro patches, rocks, trees, canoe landings, resting places in the forests, and the tiniest spots where miraculous events are believed to have taken place. And place names are far from static--names are constantly being given to new houses and buildings, streets and towns, and old names are replaced by new ones. It is essential, then, to record the names and the lore associated with them now, while Hawaiians are here to lend us their knowledge. And, whatever the fate of the Hawaiian language, the place names will endure. The first edition of Place Names of Hawaii contained only 1,125 entries. The coverage is expanded in the present edition to include about 4,000 entries, including names in English. Also, approximately 800 more names are included in this volume than appear in the second edition of the Atlas of Hawaii.
