Book excerpt: "How long has it been since you last did it? Do you want it?" The first time we met, he circled around my waist and charmingly asked me in my ear. Until a long time later, I wondered if I had fallen in love with him, or if I had simply fallen in love with the lust he had given me and was unable to extricate myself. He was the shiny fifth brother of the Diamond King. He wanted what kind of woman he didn't want, but he had to force his way through a married woman like me. His enthusiasm made me feel like a moth to a flame, and I didn't care even if my body was smashed to smithereens ...

Book excerpt: City B, international convention center. "At last but not least, may China and XX continue to grow strong together." "Last but not least, I hope China and XX can continue to cooperate for sustainable development." The applause was thunderous, lasting half a day until the end of the conference. Tan Hoanh took off his headphones, didn't leave in a hurry, sat there, looking at the commotion outside the door from the small door, some people just went and talked, there was a place to grab five and three to leave. Tan Hoanh is a twenty-two-year-old live interpreter, participating in an important international conference is not easy. There are a lot of red-eyed people in the back, there aren't many who need talent and ability like her. So, even red eyes can't do anything. As a direct interpreter who often has a fixed partner, Tan Hoanh works almost all of them with Dien Tinh. Tian Jing graduated from a prestigious university, has experience, and has been in this position for nearly thirty years, and has a bit of reputation. But today, Tian Jing suddenly had a problem, old Sun temporarily arranged for another girl to take over, Laurel. Although it was the first time working together, the two also considered a successful cooperation. "Tan Hoanh, everyone in the company arranged to come to K to sing in the evening, let's go together?" Laurel was young, her small face was fresh and beautiful. After putting away his things, he quickly dragged Tan Hoanh to go with him. K? Never been there? Smile politely, gracefully refuse, "Everyone go, I have some work tonight."

Book excerpt: Eddie Robinson's career lasted sixty-five years and spanned the era before and during World War II, integration, the organization of the players union, expansion, use of artificial turf, free agency, labor stoppages, and even the steroid era. He was a Minor League player, a Major League player, a coach, a farm director, a general manager, a scout, and a consultant. During his six and a half decades in baseball, he knew, played with or against, or worked for or with many of baseball's greats, including Hank Aaron, Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio, Bob Feller, Rogers Hornsby, Mickey Mantle, Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, Tris Speaker, George Steinbrenner, Casey Stengel, Bill Veeck, and Ted Williams. The lively autobiography of Robinson, Lucky Me highlights a career that touched all aspects of the game from player to coach to front-office executive and scout. In it Robinson reveals for the first time that the 1948 Cleveland Indians stole the opposition's signs with the use of a telescope in their drive to the pennant. This edition features a new afterword by C. Paul Rogers III.

Book excerpt: A fascinating look at how MLB teams find diamonds in the roughIn the plainest of terms, baseball scouts are tasked with seeing the future— a distant future, at that. Baseball's long developmental arc leaves room for plenty of twists and turns on the way to The Show. Some prospects shoot like arrows toward their projected potential, while others fizzle out or chart an unexpected course.Joey Votto was a lightly scouted high schooler out of Ontario, Canada. Charlie Blackmon was once coveted for his left arm more than his offensive potential. Mookie Betts "lost interest in the draft" as he went unselected round after round. Jacob deGrom refused to relinquish his role as a shortstop. Lorenzo Cain never even put on a baseball glove until high school— and then wore it on the wrong hand.Smart, Wrong, and Lucky explores how first impressions measure up to their aftermaths: the draft, years of progression, and for a talented few, major league success. MLB.com writer Jonathan Mayo profiles a diverse range of modern stars and looks at them through the eyes of those who noticed them first as prospects.Featuring exclusive interviews with scouts, players, coaches, and more, this fascinating collection of origin stories is an ode to baseball's endless possibilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything seemed to be going the Phillies’ way. Up by 6 1/2 games with just 12 left to play in the 1964 season, they appeared to have clinched their first pennant in more than a decade. Outfielder Johnny Callison narrowly missed being the National League MVP. Third baseman Richie Allen was Rookie of the Year. But the "Fightin’ Phils" didn’t make it to the postseason—they lost 10 straight and finished a game behind the St. Louis Cardinals. Besides engineering the greatest collapse of any team in major league baseball history, the ’64 Phillies had another, more important distinction: they were Philadelphia’s first truly integrated baseball team. In September Swoon William Kashatus tells the dramatic story—both on the field and off the field—of the Phillies’ bittersweet season of 1964. More than any other team in Philadelphia’s sports history, the ’64 Phillies saddled the city with a reputation for being a "loser." Even when victory seemed assured, Philadelphia found a way to lose. Unfortunately, the collapse, dubbed the "September swoon," was the beginning of a self-destructive skid in both team play and racial integration, for the very things that made the players unique threatened to tear the team apart. An antagonistic press and contentious fans blamed Richie Allen, the Phillies’ first black superstar, for the team’s losing ways, accusing him of dividing the team along racial lines. Allen manipulated the resulting controversy in the hopes that he would be traded, but in the process he managed to further fray already tenuous race relations. Based on personal interviews, player biographies, and newspaper accounts, September Swoon brings to life a season and a team that got so many Philadelphians, both black and white, to care deeply and passionately about the game at a turbulent period in the city’s—and our nation’s—history. The hometown fans reveled in their triumphs and cried in their defeat, because they saw in them a reflection of themselves. The ’64 Phillies not only won over the loyalties of a racially divided city, but gave Philadelphians a reason to dream—of a pennant, of a contender, and of a City of Brotherly Love.
