Book excerpt: Siltec Corporation's contract with JPL is directed towards the design and development of equipment and processes, to demonstrate continuous growth of crystals by the Czochralski method, suitable for producing single silicon crystals for use in solar cells. Continuous growth is defined as the growth of 100 Kg of single silicon crystal, 10 cm in diameter, from one container. Siltec's approach to meeting this goal is to develop a furnace with continuous liquid replenishment of the growth crucible, accomplished by a meltdown system and a liquid transfer mechanism, with associated automatic feedback controls. The design of the furnace elements has been completed, and all parts are now in the fabrication stage. The electronic control console regulating the growth system and meltdown system, and the liquid transfer mechanism, has been assembled. An experiment was performed with a standard production furnace, to demonstrate controlled flow of molten silicon through a small I.D. tube by pressure differential. Sections of the transfer tube system were evaluated, power requirements to balance heat losses determined, axial temperature profile in the tube, and radial temperature gradients in the heat pack were measured. A mathematical model was made for the electromagnetic throttle valve to control flow of molten silicon through small I.D. tubes. Design parameters were derived from the model to build a working system for performance evaluation.

Accuracy and reliability of the temperature sensor, which is part of the power input control system for the transfer tube, was improved. Following the schedule of the growth demonstration plan, melt-down and transfer of molten silicon from the melt-down crucible into the growth crucible containing molten silicon was performed successfully, verifying the melt-down and transfer operation (rate of silicon transfer> 2 Kg/hr). The final task of the growth demonstration plan prior to attempting 100 Kg throughput runs was achieved. This included the demonstration of continuous melt replenishment of the growth crucible while growing a crystal of 100 mm diameter and maintaining a constant melt level in the growth crucible. Crystals grown from a melt with continuous liquid replenishment exhibited a very small or zero longitudinal resistivity gradient when the ratio of the dopant concentrations of the replenishing melt to the melt in the growth crucible was equal to the effective segregation coefficient of the used dopant.

Book excerpt: This project, currently in its second phase, is directed toward the design and development of equipment and processes to demonstrate continuous growth of crystals by the Czochralski method, suitable for producing single silicon crystals for use in solar cells. Continuous is defined as the growth of at least 150 kg of monosilicon crystal, 150 mm in diameter, from one growth container. The approach to meeting this goal is to develop a furnace with continuous liquid replenishment of the growth crucible, accomplished by a meltdown system with a continuous solid silicon fedd methanism and a liquid transfer system, with associated automatic feedback controls. In order to establish process parameters for conventional CZ growth of 150 mm ingots, several runs with 12-kg charges were performed, and solidification rates of 2.7 to 3.5 kg/hr were achieved. Significant progress has been made in the development of a new melt transfer system. Basic material problems relating to the high temperature environment were solved. The cost of the new transfer mechanism is lowered substantially through multiple use of the major system components. Manufacturing of parts and installation of the polyrod feed mechanism for continuous recharging of the meltdown chamber were completed together with the feedback control system which uses the melt level sensor belonging to the growth crucible as input. The design for a continuous particle feeder into the meltdown chamber has been completed, and the fabrication of this system is currently in progress. Several short melt replenishment runs with 5 to 8 kg of continuous melt transfer were performed in an effort to develop feedback control systems for solid rod and particle feeding as well as to establish the permissible pressure region in which melt transfer can be assured.
