Book excerpt: The International conference on Design & Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning is organised bi-annually by the Eindhoven University of Technology. This volume contains a selection of papers from the seventh conference that was held at De Ruwenberg Castle in Sint-Michiels Gestel, The Netherlands, from 2 to 5 July, 2004. Traditionally, the DDSS conferences aim to be a platform for both starting and experienced researchers who focus on the development and application of computer support in the areas of urban planning and architectural design. This results in an interesting mix of well-established research projects and first explorations. It also leads to a very valuable cross-over of theories, methods, and technologies for support systems in the two different areas, architecture and urban planning. This volume contains 22 peer reviewed papers from this year's conference that are organised into five sections: * Applications of Artificial Intelligence, * Visualisation fro Design and Decision Support, * Simulation and Agent Technology, * Design Research and Design Support Systems, * Geographical Information Systems. Together, these papers provide an excellent overview of the latest results in research and development of design and decision support systems in architecture and urban planning.
Book Synopsis The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Multiple Roles of Bacteria in Human Life by : Tatiana Venkova
Download or read book The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Multiple Roles of Bacteria in Human Life written by Tatiana Venkova and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-10-17 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacteria are among the earliest forms of life on Earth. Notwithstanding their small size and primitive origin, bacteria still have a tremendous impact on everyday human life. Over the centuries, research into bacteria have provided and enriched the fundamental biological knowledge due to their readily measured processes and effects on higher organisms. Although molecular genetics and microbiology were among the scientific fields that have mostly benefited from the discoveries made in bacteria, our current state of knowledge has gone beyond what anyone could have ever imagined. The present Research Topic aims to cover new and exciting broad aspects of the importance of bacteria to human life, both positive and negative influences. Regulation of bacterial gene expression, replication and segregation control mechanisms, cell to cell communication via quorum sensors, and the relatively recent finding of bacterial immunity via CRISPR, have led to the development of many, and very important new tools in biotechnology and the emerging field of molecular medicine. The battle against infectious diseases has also benefited from the genetic approaches that have been developed in the quest for finding new targets and novel drugs against pathogenic bacteria. At the next level, the human microbiome project has opened up new avenues in understanding the role of bacteria in human health and wellbeing. Finally, the relationship between bacterial infections and human cancers will also be covered, a subject that is still under verification through rigorous experimental approaches. Special emphasis will be given to the bacterial accessory genome, i.e the mobilome, as the primary cause of health-threatening antimicrobial resistance and the production of toxins and virulence factors. Taking into account the evolutionary importance of horizontal gene transfer and the additional beneficial roles of certain bacterial mobile genetic elements, they help project best “the Good, the Bad and the Ugly” outline of this topic. At the time this eBook is about to be published, our Research Topic has registered nearly 55, 000 views.

Download or read book The 52 Attributes of God written by Raymond Creed and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The 52 Attributes of God handles such questions as: - 1) Who is God? 2) What is He like? 3) How did He react to the death of Jesus? 4) How does He react to the corruption found in much of the Church? 5) To what extent can we become like God? 'The 52 Attributes of God' should prove particularly useful to religious ministers (of all denominational backgrounds), local church elders, Christian teachers, evangelists and theological students. The Messianic Jewish community and those wishing to delve deeper into theology would especially benefit. It should also be of assistance to those confused or troubled by particular 'spiritualities' which alluringly offer the chance of becoming divine. Any public or academic library with a theological section will find it a rich resource.
Book Synopsis Fluid Distribution Along the Nankai-Trough Megathrust Fault off the Kii Peninsula by : Takeshi Akuhara
Download or read book Fluid Distribution Along the Nankai-Trough Megathrust Fault off the Kii Peninsula written by Takeshi Akuhara and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores fluid distribution along the Nankai-Trough megathrust fault around the Kii Peninsula of Japan, where devastating earthquakes are expected to occur in the near future. Exploring fluid distribution along subduction zones is an important issue because the fluid is considered to control the occurrence of earthquakes. One of the effective strategies to estimate fluid content is retrieving receiver functions (RFs) from seismograms, but in the case of ocean-bottom seismometers (OBSs), noisy P-wave reverberations within the seawater column make such an analysis difficult. The author therefore developed a novel technique to suppress the water reverberations, which allows obtaining the fluid distribution data along a wide depth range on the plate interface. This thesis first presents the new technique, called the water layer filter method, and demonstrates its efficiency by using both synthetic and observation data. Then, using the method, a receiver function image of the Philippine Sea Plate is constructed to reveal dehydration processes of the subducting oceanic crust around the Kii Peninsula. Finally, the author performs high-frequency receiver function inversion analysis. The results indicate the presence of a thin fluid-rich sediment layer along the megathrust fault off the Kii Peninsula that acts as a pathway of fluid. Nowadays, the number of offshore observations is increasing worldwide. In this respect, the attempt to better analyze OBS data employing the new method will become more important in future studies.

Book Synopsis Introductory Digital Electronics by : N. W. Heap
Download or read book Introductory Digital Electronics written by N. W. Heap and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an edited version of part of the teaching text used for the Open University's undergraduate course 'T283 Introductory Electronics', first presented in 1980. The original text was pro duced by a course team of nine authors and nine support staff. The team was also responsible for student experimental kits, television and radio programmes. The approach adopted by the course team was to try and teach, where possible, through specification of the problem rather than through discussion of the operation of a selection of available devices and components; since this leads more naturally to modem design strategies such as 'top-down'. The emphasis in the book on the solution of combinational and sequential logic problems by the truth tables and ROMs, rather than logic gates and mapping techniques, illustrates this approach. The book covers topics ranging from logic to microprocessor memory systems and is intended for students with a background in analogue electronics who wish to update their knowledge to include digital electronic systems. Chapter 2 introduces the basic ideas of combinational logic design; truth tables, ROMs, logic gates and Boolean algebra. Chapter 3 deals with sequential logic, and shows how one can design binary and decimal counters and use these to produce a system controller. Chapter 4 examines the system elements needed to interconnect analogue and digital systems.
