Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid Penetration into Granular Media: Visualizing the Fundamental Physics of Rapid Penetration introduces readers to the variety of methods developed to visualize, observe, and model the rapid penetration of natural and man-made projectiles into earth materials while providing seasoned practitioners with a standard reference that showcases the topic's most recent developments in research and application. There has been a flurry of recently funded research both in the U.S. and Europe on studying the behavior of projectiles in granular media. This book compiles the findings of recent research on the subject and outlines the fundamental physics of rapid earth penetration, and assembles a comprehensive collection of experimental and numerical techniques to study the problem. - Presents a comprehensive interdisciplinary review of the latest research developments in the response of granular media to impact and impulsive loading - Combines the experience of prominent researchers from different disciplines focusing on the challenges presented by impact loading of granular media - Introduces recently developed methods for visualizing the fundamental physics of rapid penetration into granular media

Book excerpt: The long, narrow, and shallow (less than 20 m) shelf region of Southeast Florida is distinctly different from the deeper off shore water where the dominant motions are those of the Florida Current. The shallow water is primarily wind driven, but also subject to tidal motions near tidal inlets. A basic problem in determining South Florida coastal processes is that the major dynamics and, hence, the major exchange mechanisms contain so much energy at low frequency that at least 4 months of data are required for computation of reliable statistics. In long current measurement records, the net northward motion is nearly zero. In the winter, the temperature of coastal water is less than the temperature of offshore water by about 1⁄2° C/km. This positive east-west gradient of temperature is caused by the frequently occurring cold fronts which pass over South Florida regularly in the winter. The momentum flux that had the most spatial variation and, hence, whose divergence was also the largest, was the low frequency covariance between the north and east components of current where its sign actually changed from -26 to 20 cm2 /sec2 over a distance of only 2 km. The resulting divergence, or Reynolds stress, was of order 10−4) cm/sec2.

Book excerpt: On June 28, 2002, over six hundred members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) descended on Fenway Park for an interleague contest between the hometown Boston Red Sox and their National League rivals, the former Boston—-now Atlanta—-Braves. Sixty-four of these avid fans, historians, statisticians, and game enthusiasts recorded their experiences for this book. Some wrote from privileged views such as inside the Green Monster’s manual scoreboard, the Braves clubhouse, and the broad- cast booth, while others took in the essence of Fenway from the grandstand or bleachers. The result is a fascinating look at Major League Baseball, the Red Sox and their colorful history, the charms and challenges of Fenway Park, and the allure of being a baseball fan. Including articles on Red Sox/Boston Braves history and the City Series, The Fenway Project combines historical background as only SABR can deliver it with this fascinating "one night at the ballpark" as recorded by 64 observers on the spot. From the man who sang the National Anthem (SABR member Joe Mancuso) to the woman who threw out the first pitch (SABR's president Claudia Perry), from a man in the bleachers to a woman in the press box, readers of The Fenway Project will see the game from all angles. Book excerpt: This catalog contains data on the magnitudes of more than 100,000 stars in the Galaxy. For each star listed, the catalog gives the position, identification, and ultraviolet, blue and visual magnitude from photoelectric measurements. The measurements from which these mean values were computed were collected from observations published between 1953 and 1992. The volume includes more than 1400 references.

Book excerpt: Lipoprotein(a) presents the proceedings of the International Symposium, held in Chicago, Illinois, on December 2–3, 1988. It discusses the different aspects of the research on lipoprotein(a), commonly referred to as Lp(a). It covers a wide range of topics, including comparative biology, metabolism, structure, epidemiology, and treatment. Comprised of 15 chapters, the book starts with an overview of the role of Lp(a) in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), followed by a discussion on recent findings and developments. It then considers the relationship between elevated plasma Lp(a) and the inherited risk factor for the development of coronary heart disease. The reader is also introduced to the various components of Lp(a), which include neutral lipids, polar lipids, apoprotein(a), and apoprotein B. Other chapters discuss the specific functions of apolipoproteins in plasma lipid metabolism, which determine the fate of the various lipoprotein particles in plasma. This book will be of benefit to cardiologists and medical practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecophysiological mechanisms underlie plant responses to environmental conditions and the influence these responses have on ecological patterns and processes. In this Special Issue, with a particular interest in the interactions between climate change, environmental disturbance, and functional ecology, experimental observations are described at a range of spatial scales. A modeling framework is used in an effort to relate mechanistic responses to ecosystem functions and services, and link forest ecophysiology and environmental indicators. This Special Issue collects important advances in studying and monitoring plant–environment interactions, covering biogeographic gradients from Mediterranean woodlands to boreal forests and from Alpine mountains to tropical environments.
