Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Lowell To gather and embalm all that seemed most valuable in this heritage of memories and traditions, has been the object of the present work, which covers the whole period from the discovery of the Merrimack River by De Monts, in 1605, to the year of Grace 1868. The first edition, or rather the original germ, of this work, was published in 1856. With the aid of a mass of materials laboriously gathered during the last twelve years, I may hope that the value of the work has been greatly increased. The narrative has been thoroughly revised, and very much enlarged. Several engravers of established reputation were employed to execute illustrative cuts. Many of these are well done: butsome are so badly executed that, perhaps, an apology is due for their insertion in these pages; and others have been rejected altogether. Materials were at hand for a much larger volume, or even for several volumes; but I have aimed to be concise, - considering Moses, who, in two lines, chronicled the creation of a world, (pace Colenso, ) a much better model for the local annalist than he who filled several volumes with the burning of a Brunswick Theatre. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lowell: Past, Present and Prospective This pamphlet was compiled and prepared with a view to presenting in a concise and available form, certain important facts regarding the city of Lowell - its industries, its enterprises and its prospects. Great pains were taken to collect the statistics which are as nearly accurate as an unofficial collation could possibly be. The large four-page map, found elsewhere in the pamphlet, was especially prepared for this volume from the new maps of the U. S. survey, and it is of interest because it embraces a territory which very little exceeds the area of the city of Worcester. On this map will be found letters which refer to land elsewhere described which is available for manufacturing purposes. There is much valuable information within the covers of this pamphlet, and an abundance of evidence to show that for investment, particularly in manufactures, there are few places more suitable and desirable than Lowell. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lowell Offering A few turns more brought him in sight of an opening large enough for quite a farm, in the centre of which stood a barn, and a small log house; that is, a house formed from whole timber, the logs laid lengthwise, one upon top of another, and grooved at the ends to fix the angles firmly. The barn was much more civilized. It was of pretty good sized dimen sions, and framed from sawed and hewed timber, covered with boards. At the east end of the house, there was a large wood-pile, rivalling in size the house itself; and at the west end, there was an open shed, where, in Spite of the frozen atmosphere, there were two men busily engaged in shaving pine staves, while a third one was setting up the staves into small tubs, which would hold three or four gallons. Do you expect any use for your buckets this spring? Abruptly ia quired the traveller, reining in his horse towards the shed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from James Russell Lowell A keen observer has said, in speaking of Lowell as a man, that you had to surrender yourself to his influence before he approved of you and allowed you to get his best. After that he was very glad to reveal him self. I am not quite sure that I have sub mitted to his in uence. I rather hope not. But I also hope, all the same, that, in a way, I have got the best of him that is now possible That is what I want, - all, I think, that any one should now ask. In this essay much has of necessity been left out; but it has been my aim to seize those characteristics and qualities which must en dure, and which will make him a necessity to those who live after him. This book was released on with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of James Russell Lowell His Was indeed a nature sloping to the southern side, and his friends could bask in the even sunshine of it, while he kept the gloomy skies carefully to himself. After months of constant pain, and anxiety for his daughter's health which he sums up in half a' dozen lines, he writes in October 1890 I am beginning to feel like my old, or rather my young self again. When you write next it must be in words of one syllable, and with everything adapted to the apprehension of a boy. I have had enough to do with death, nor wish to have more till my own turn comes, and that I am ready for, tho' perhaps too easily contented here. But the earth is so beautiful And six months later, in his last letter, after a terrible relapse Yester day I left my bed where I had been lying for a fortnight, and am now hobbling about in felt slippers. I suffered such bitter torture that I foresee. I shall recover slowly. This being so, I must give up the feeble hope I had of seeing the dear old Home this summer. I am glad you got the books and like them. I didn't mean by this collected and uniform edition to write finis, ' tho' I am not sure my health won't write it for me. But I have enough uncollected essays of one kind or another to make a volume, and poems enough to fill a small other volume. If the summer does as much for me as I hope, I suppose that I shall wet my pen again. Good news this for readers, and for friends, even in their present distress. Then he breaks away into politics with all his old playfulness. You mustn't think the Irish question settled, or near it. You know how highly I value Balfour, but the Irish trouble is something too deep for railways or transplantation to cure. It is a case of suppressed gout. Experto erede! - Don't I live in the midst of a population chiefly Irish? It is proof against everything - even against the exquisite comicality of its own proceedings. Boulogne must be in the Grand Duchy of Gerolstein. You are having daffodils and things ere this. We are still in the depths of winter if that is to be measured by snow. The view from my windows would gladden the heart of a polar bear. But this will make our spring less unendurable when it comes. Our politics are going well. The Congress just ended has spent all our surplus and more. This brings us down to hard-pan at last, which will be good for us. Download or read book The Achievement of Robert Lowell written by Jerome Mazzaro and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Achievement of Robert Lowell: 1939-1959 Then last spring, Hugh B. Staples published a checklist and article on Lowell in the Harvard University Bulletin, XIII 292-318. The checklist, wonderfully adequate in var iant readings and anthology inclusions, proved less adequate in its recordings of actual editions, dates of individual appear anecs of poems, and material on Lowell. This prompted me first to revise and amend Staples's work, but the complications this produced, plus all the new material since Spring, 1959, led me to drop this project. Even Staples suggested this in favor of a new bibliography. However, this bibliography, as complete as it is, can make no claims to being entirely definitive. Responsibility for gaps and errors that exist in it are mine, and it goes without saying that I should welcome corrections and additional material from anyone.
