Book excerpt: Deviations from single glide during the deformation of Cu single crystals have been detected by following the orientation of the tensile axis using x-ray techniques. The deviations for room temperature deformation of some crystals can be explained if it is assumed that 5-10% of the elongation is produced by slip on the secondary systems and the remainder on the primary system. The deviations from single glide are much smaller in alpha-brass crystals which also show more overshoot, so that secondary slip is inhibited. It is suggested that secondary slip is produced near the heads of piled-up groups of primary dislocations at the ends of newly formed slip lines where the resolved shear stress on the secondary systems is high. Secondary slip is thus very localized, producing little strain, but it can give rise to a high forest density.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniaxial compression experiments on copper single crystals, oriented to maximize the shear for one slip system, show some unexpected results. In addition to the expected activity on the primary slip system, the results show appreciable activity perpendicular to the primary system. The magnitude of the activity orthogonal to the primary varies from being equal to the primary for the as-fabricated samples to 1/5 of the primary in the samples annealed after fabrication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observations of dislocation distribution in copper single crystals oriented for single glide and deformed at low temperatures are described. In stage I the dislocation population consists mainly of bundles of long edge dislocations belonging to the primary glide system. They are distributed very non-uniformly with dense clumps separated by large areas of perfect material. The dislocations become more tangled with increasing deformation until in stage II they consist mainly of networks lying approximately parallel to the active glide plane and dense clumps of primary edge dislocations. Large differences in distribution are observed in areas near to and far from deformation bands. The results of thin foil observations are compared with data obtained by other methods, e.g., etch pitting and slip lines and their significance are discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: This is the fourth edition of a work which first appeared in 1965. The first edition had approximately one thousand pages in a single volume. This latest volume has almost three thousand pages in 3 volumes which is a fair measure of the pace at which the discipline of physical metallurgy has grown in the intervening 30 years. Almost all the topics previously treated are still in evidence in this version which is approximately 50% bigger than the previous edition. All the chapters have been either totally rewritten by new authors or thoroughly revised and expanded, either by the third-edition authors alone or jointly with new co-authors. Three chapters on new topics have been added, dealing with dry corrosion, oxidation and protection of metal surfaces; the dislocation theory of the mechanical behavior of intermetallic compounds; and (most novel) a chapter on polymer science for metallurgists, which analyses the conceptual mismatch between metallurgists' and polymer scientists' way of looking at materials. Special care has been taken throughout all chapters to incorporate the latest experimental research results and theoretical insights. Several thousand citations to the research and review literature are included in this edition. There is a very detailed subject index, as well as a comprehensive author index. The original version of this book has long been regarded as the standard text in physical metallurgy and this thoroughly rewritten and updated version will retain this status.

Book excerpt: In writing this monograph, the aim has been to consider the mechanical properties of the wide range of materials now available in such a way as to start with the fundamental nature of these properties and to follow the discussion through to the point at which the reader is able to comprehend the significance or otherwise of the large amounts of data now available in design manuals and other compilations. In short, it is hoped that this volume will be used as a companion to these data compilations and as an aid to their interpretation. In attempting to cover such a wide field, a large degree of selection has been necessary, as complete volumes have been written on topics which here have had to be covered in a few pages or less. It is inevitable that not everyone will agree with the choice made, especially if it is his own subject which has been discussed rather briefly, and the author accepts full res ponsibility for the selection made. The book is written at a level which should be easily followed by a university graduate in science or engineer ing, although, if his background has not included a course in materials science, some groundwork may be lacking.

Book excerpt: The scientific work of Jean Mandel has been exceptionally rich in the area of the mechanics of solids; the subjects which he has treated have been extremely diverse, from the theory of plasticity, buckling, soil mechanics, visco-elasticity, the theory of reduced models, and thermo dynamics, to percolation in porous media. But throughout this com prehensive work Jean Mandel has always maintained his interest in forming connections between the properties of materials (strength, deformability, viscosity) and the properties of their basic constituents. What is sometimes referred to in materials science as the transition from the microscopic to the macroscopic has for him been a very constant direction of research, which he never ceased to encourage in the Laboratoire de Mecanique des Solides of which he was the director. It is known that in the plasticity of metals permanent deformations must be sought in intercrystalline slip and more generally in disloca tions and the various microstructural defects. Before deformation of polycrystals is tackled, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms which take place within the crystal: the different systems of slip which may be activated and also the elementary mechanisms of twinning. Jean Mandel has shown how to make the transition from the behaviour of the single crystal to that of the polycrystal and has given the relation ships between the overall permanent deformation of the polycrystal and the plastic deformation of the single crystal.
