In recent years, researchers have focused on low temperature combustion technologies which have demonstrated potential to satisfy environmental regulations that the automotive sector is required to meet. Low temperature chemistry (LTC) engine technologies include strategies such as homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI), reactivity-controlled compression ignition (RCCI), partially premixed compression ignition (PPCI), and spark-assisted compression ignition (SACI), and have received great attention. However, LTC fuel oxidation is still not well-understood despite its importance in combustion phenomena such as engine knock. This dissertation advances the understanding of LTC, and the cool flames formed from LTC, through experiments and simulations of combustion phenomena that incorporate both complex LTC kinetics and transport interactions. Fundamental cool flame properties such as propagation speed and LTC-derived CH2O structure in premixed and nonpremixed flames are measured experimentally to provide novel insights into cool flame characteristics and simulation targets for model development. Insights from experiments and modeling are applied to the simulation of cool flames formed from droplet combustion in microgravity, such as those discovered aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The outcomes of this dissertation provide new insights into LTC and cool flames in engine-relevant applications, and the data and analyses developed in this work can aid in the future development and refinement of LTC kinetics models.

Chemical kinetics play an important role in this regard and a precise understanding of them can aid in better modeling of combustion phenomena under engine-relevant conditions. While high temperature oxidation kinetics have been investigated a great deal, the reaction pathways and kinetics of low temperature fuel oxidation are still not well-developed despite their importance in combustion phenomena such as engine knock. Hence, an experimental platform which can provide benchmark results under strong chemistry-transport coupling for the validation and development of low temperature chemical kinetics models is advantageous. An experimental setup for the study of low temperature fuel combustion was developed and used to characterize ozone-enhanced laminar premixed cool flames, where the setup had the capability to produce stabilized cool flames of different fuels over a range of equivalence ratios and at sub-atmospheric pressures. The experimental results included quantification of adiabatic cool flame propagation speeds using a lift-off height technique, and spatially-resolved flame temperature profiles. Additionally, species analysis via gas chromatography was performed and fully-resolved species concentration profiles as well as species concentrations at quasi-equilibrium conditions downstream of the cool flames were obtained. Formaldehyde Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (CH2O PLIF) was also utilized to characterize the lift-off heights of cool flames and estimate the propagation speed, and the results were compared with those from broadband chemiluminescence. CH2O PLIF was also used to investigate the adiabicity assumption for freely-propagating cool flames. The method of Directed Relation Graph was utilized to reduce chemical kinetics models and capture the cool flame chemistry, enabling non-fixed temperature and freely propagating simulations of cool flames without hot flame transition as well as the study of important cool flame reaction pathways. The experimental results were compared to numerical simulations and reasonable agreement was observed. The important outcomes of this work include the demonstration and utilization of a novel experimental platform for the study of cool flames, generation of unique data regarding propagation speeds of cool flame, and a reduction method to capture and study cool flame chemistry.

In many potential advanced combustion engines, including detonation-based engines, low temperature chemistry (LTC) plays a critical role in the initial chemical kinetics driving proper combustion timing or may function as a kind of parasitic combustion diminishing engine performance. Although high temperature combustion chemistry has been extensively studied, LTC and its effects on detonations are comparatively less known. This dissertation first investigates LTC in laminar, freely propagating n-decane/O2/O3 cool flames by experimentally characterizing the propagation speeds, flame temperatures, and products over a range of equivalence ratios. A comparison is made to one-dimensional cool flame simulations and potential causes for discrepancies between experimental findings and numerical results are explored. The second aim of this dissertation is to investigate the effects of thermal pretreatment of reactants by LTC on subsequent detonation of those reactants. Ozoneless and O3-enhanced DME/O2 reactants undergo LTC induced by reactant heating, and subsequent detonations are experimentally investigated by measuring detonation wave velocity, mean cell size, and general detonability with differing thermal pretreatment times over a range of O3 enhancement levels and equivalence ratios. Numerical simulations are employed, results are compared to experimental results, and improvements of existing empirical detonation correlations are presented and discussed. Finally, the significance of this work for next generation propulsion engines is discussed.
