Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One studying the motion of fluids relative to particulate systems is soon impressed by the dichotomy which exists between books covering theoretical and practical aspects. Classical hydrodynamics is largely concerned with perfect fluids which unfortunately exert no forces on the particles past which they move. Practical approaches to subjects like fluidization, sedimentation, and flow through porous media abound in much useful but uncorrelated empirical information. The present book represents an attempt to bridge this gap by providing at least the beginnings of a rational approach to fluid particle dynamics, based on first principles. From the pedagogic viewpoint it seems worthwhile to show that the Navier-Stokes equations, which form the basis of all systematic texts, can be employed for useful practical applications beyond the elementary problems of laminar flow in pipes and Stokes law for the motion of a single particle. Although a suspension may often be viewed as a continuum for practical purposes, it really consists of a discrete collection of particles immersed in an essentially continuous fluid. Consideration of the actual detailed boundary value problems posed by this viewpoint may serve to call attention to the limitation of idealizations which apply to the overall transport properties of a mixture of fluid and solid particles.

Book excerpt: In recent decades, numerical algorithms and computer power have advanced to the point where computer simulations of the equations fluid flow have become routine. How does that affect the way we teach fluid dynamics? This book seizes on that question. One of its objectives is to integrate computer solutions into fluid dynamics education; another is to review important concepts of fluid dynamics that a computationalist needs in order to understand computed flows. This book provides a development of fluid flow theory in concert with a perspective on how computations are formulated and effected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microhydrodynamics: Principles and Selected Applications presents analytical and numerical methods for describing motion of small particles suspended in viscous fluids. The text first covers the fundamental principles of low-Reynolds-number flow, including the governing equations and fundamental theorems; the dynamics of a single particle in a flow field; and hydrodynamic interactions between suspended particles. Next, the book deals with the advances in the mathematical and computational aspects of viscous particulate flows that point to innovations for large-scale simulations on parallel computers. The book will be of great use to students in engineering and applied mathematics. Students and practitioners of chemistry will also benefit from this book.

This book was released on 2015-11-11 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid-structure interactions have been well studied over the years but most of the focus has been on high Reynolds number flows, inertially dominated flows where the drag force from the fluid typically varies as the square of the local fluid speed. There are though a large number of fluid-structure interaction problems at low values of the Reynolds number, where the fluid effects are dominated by viscosity and the drag force from the fluid typically varies linearly with the local fluid speed, which are applicable to many current research areas including hydrodynamics, microfluidics and hemodynamics. Edited by experts in complex fluids, Fluid-Structure Interactions in Low-Reynolds-Number Flows is the first book to bring together topics on this subject including elasticity of beams, flow in tubes, mechanical instabilities induced by complex liquids drying, blood flow, theoretical models for low-Reynolds number locomotion and capsules in flow. The book includes introductory chapters highlighting important background ideas about low Reynolds number flows and elasticity to make the subject matter more approachable to those new to the area across engineering, physics, chemistry and biology.

Book excerpt: The Twenty-Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics was held in Washington, D.C., from August 9-14, 1998. It coincided with the 100th anniversary of the David Taylor Model Basin. This international symposium was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research (Mechanics and Energy Conversion S&T Division), the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (David Taylor Model Basin). This biennial symposium promotes the technical exchange of naval research developments of common interest to all the countries of the world. The forum encourages both formal and informal discussion of the presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the author's lectures on fluid mechanics modeling, this text takes a rigorous approach to the topic while maintaining a clear, easy-to-understand style. It deals with the main physical phenomena that occur in slow, inertialess viscous flows commonly encountered in various industrial, biophysical, and natural processes. Suitable for students in chemical or mechanical engineering, bioengineering, and physics, the book discusses a wide variety of topics, including confined flows, complex fluids, and rheology. Each situation is illustrated with examples and multi-part problems that stress analytical solutions and the physical interpretation of the mathematical results.
