Firstly the focus lies on the ecological properties of concepts such as Low Impact Development (LID), Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) and Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) especially with regard to the site conditions in the study area. Through a literature research no specific impediments which would hinder an potential implementation could be detected. However there are still general obstacles that discourage a more intensive utilization. In the practical part the Urban Biophysical Environments & Technologies Simulator (UrbanBEATS), a dedicated software for the planning of sustainable storm water management, is used to detect suitable types and locations for the elements of sustainable storm water management in the study area. In a further step the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) is applied in order to assess the hydrological performance in quantitative terms. The performance during five different storm events are recorded and show a peak runoff reduction up to 4.26% in the total system, a peak fooding reduction up to 20.28% and a fooding volume reduction up to 17.49%.

Book excerpt: There is much discussion regarding the effects of urban development on stormwater management, especially the negative effects such as flooding, stream erosion, and increased pollution. An emerging sustainable stormwater management philosophy is Low Impact Development (LID), which seeks to reverse these negative effects by designing infrastructure to mimic natural hydrologic processes such as infiltration. This paper considers several lot level stormwater management controls encouraged by LID using the Environmental Protection Agency s modeling program SWMM 5.0. The results show that for a typical residential lot in Toronto, Ontario, LID technologies can have a significant positive impact. For example, peak runoff from a 1-inch unit storm was reduced by 57% with the construction of a green roof or when paved areas are replaced with porous paving.

We hope that this plan will serve as a model for the federal community and will demonstrate many of the practices that can be employed to mitigate the effects of stormwater runoff and reduce combined sewer overflows into our rivers, streams and coastal waters. It will also demonstrate that sustainable design and LID can be utilized in high profile, urban sites that must pass through rigorous aesthetic design reviews.
