Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no other particle than the neutron which has attracted so much interest, both in fundamental physics and for applications. Because no larger compilation of neutron data has appeared since more than 10 years, it seemed necessary, in particular for applications, to publish an up-to-date collection of such data. The present compilation provides data for neutrons with energies lower than 20 MeV, with the emphasis on energies below the keV range. There is such an abundance of experimental data that it had to be distributed over three volumes. The fundamental properties of the neutron, the cross sections for various neutron reactions and some overall parameters of resonances are reproduced in the present subvolumes I/16A Part 1 and Part 2, while Volume I/16B, which has already been published, is completely dedicated to the data of neutron resonance parameters.

Book excerpt: Nuclear Science and Technology, Volume 2: Neutron Physics provides information pertinent to neutron and reactor physics. This book presents a discussion of the general area of energy sources, surveying the fusion problem. Organized into 16 chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the broad range of other research related to nuclear technology, radiation effects, solid state work, chemistry, and materials research. This book then examines the experimental data for the cross sections and fission parameters of the fissile nuclides. Other chapters outline the role of fast choppers in time-of-flight spectrometers and consider the total cross section measurements. This book discusses as well the various experiments performed to test the operation of the system. The final chapter deals with the long-range prospects of fusion power. This book is a valuable resource for graduate students, physicists, nuclear engineers, researchers, scientists involved in fusion research will find this book extremely useful.

Book excerpt: The properties of the harmonic oscillator with random frequency or/and random damping formed the content of the first edition. The second edition includes hundreds of publications on this subject since 2005. The noisy oscillator continues to be the subject of intensive studies in physics, chemistry, biology, and social sciences. The new and the latest type of a stochastic oscillator has also been considered, namely, an oscillator with random mass. Such model describes, among other phenomena, Brownian motion with adhesion, where the molecules of the surrounding medium not only randomly collide, but also stick to the Brownian particle for some (random) time, thereby changing its mass. This edition contains two new chapters, eight new sections and an expanded bibliography. A wide group of researchers, students and teachers will benefit from this book.

Book excerpt: Neutron Physics and Nuclear Data in Science and Technology, Volume 3: Neutron Radiative Capture discusses topics that help bridge the gap between experimental and theoretical scientists and applications scientists and engineers. The first chapter discusses the theory of slow neutron radiative capture, while the second chapter covers fast neutron radiative capture. Chapter III talks about methods for calculating neutron capture cross sections and gamma-ray spectra, while Chapter IV deals with the measurement techniques for radiative neutron capture, and Chapter V discusses neutron capture processes in fission reactors. The sixth chapter covers applications to stellar nucleosynthesis and the seventh chapter covers the practical uses of neutron capture gamma-ray spectroscopy. The book is meant for the use of graduate students who are knowledgeable about basic nuclear physics.

Book excerpt: The reactor-based laboratory at the Institut Laue-Langevin is recognized as the world's most productive and reliable source of slow neutrons for the study of low energy particle and nuclear physics. The book highlights the impact of about 600 very diverse publications about work performed in these fields during the past more than 30 years of reactor operation at this institute. On one hand neutrons are used as a tool to generate nuclei in excited states for studying their structure and decay, in particular fission. Uniquely sensitive experiments can tell us a great deal about the symmetry characteristics of nuclei and their fission properties. On the other hand, studies with slow neutrons as the object of investigation are complementary to studies at huge particle accelerators. Experiments carried out at the ILL contribute to elucidate basic questions about the building blocks of the Universe by analyzing very precisely subtle neutron properties.
