Book Synopsis Sometime a Fine Morning by : Ernest Yates
Download or read book Sometime a Fine Morning written by Ernest Yates and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-04-08 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Ernest Yates’s fourteenth volume of poems, and the eleventh volume in an ongoing series based on his wanderings through Philadelphia streets. In this volume the poet’s morning walk along one of Philadelphia’s main thoroughfares introduces a realm “beyond belief,” as the volume’s first poem announces. Then in poem after poem the secular city provides ground and counterpoint to the poet’s variable meditations, as the city’s impersonality drives the poet to contemplate such human values as love, beauty, freedom, justice. In the end the poet moves on, bearing away all vain musings; it is the city?in its varied, raw physicality?that abides.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Thomas Paine and Benjamin Franklin put type to printing press, Philadelphia has been a haven and an inspiration for writers. Local essayist Agnes Repplier once shared a glass of whiskey with Walt Whitman, who frequently strolled Market Street. Gothic writers like Edgar Allan Poe and George Lippard plumbed the city's dark streets for material. In the twentieth century, Northern Liberties native John McIntyre found a backdrop for his gritty noir in the working-class neighborhoods, while novelist Pearl S. Buck discovered a creative sanctuary in Center City. From Quaker novelist Charles Brockden Brown to 1973 U.S. poet laureate Daniel Hoffman, author Thom Nickels explores Philadelphia's literary landscape.

In his highly anticipated follow up to Helium, Francisco has created his own words for the things we cannot give name to. English is the shiniest hammer I own, but it's also the only thing in my toolbox. Nolexi noun no·lex·i | \ nō-lek-si \ Definition of nolexi: 1 : a word or phrase that does not exist or has no direct translation in a particular language I'll Fly Away uses Francisco's invented lexicon as the palette to paint an intimate portrait of Black life in America — one that praises joy and grace without shying away from the hard truths confronting all of us today.
Book Synopsis I May Or May Not Love You by : David Perkins
Download or read book I May Or May Not Love You written by David Perkins and published by Ice Cube Press. This book was released on 2020-03-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems in I May or May Not Love You reflect the author's belief that all of the history of poetry is there for the looting. You'll find Marianne Moore lurking in "I Should Have No Doubts," and Ezra Pound hanging out in "Meditation in the Color of C"; Homer beached in "Sentiment for a City," and W.B. Yeats bar-hopping in "Aging Out," among others. And while he believes that all schools of poetry have something to teach, it's better to stay in class and go on assimilating rather than graduate. It's the music of words that matter here: the "banging of consonants" the "rolling vowels," and the assonance and alliteration and the "contrapuntally chimed rhymes, off-key and off-kilter," as they wander the terrain; Paris, Philadelphia, Denver; gazing at clocks and mirrors, listening to Tchaikovsky, playing the lottery, looking askance at Death, and cross-examining love.

Book excerpt: "Blythe Davenport's mastery of the intricate and unexpected image guides us back and forth from past to present in her poetic portraits of the Philadelphia landscape. She fills her poems with voices, places, and lines like 'the sun flexes his supernova arm, punching/a perfect round brilliant/in the bruised evening sky.' This is a book well worth reading and rereading for its informed voice, its subtlety, its grace." -Donna Wolf-Palacio, author of What I Don't Know
Download or read book Common Wealth written by Marjorie Maddox and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2005-11-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years, Pennsylvania has been graced with an abundance of writers whose work draws imaginatively on the state’s history and culture. Common Wealth sings the essence of Pennsylvania through contemporary poetry. Whether Pennsylvania is their point of origin or their destination, the featured poets ultimately find what matters: heritage, pride, work, inventiveness, struggle, faith, beauty, hope. Keystone poets Marjorie Maddox and Jerry Wemple celebrate Pennsylvania with this wide range of new and veteran poets, including former state poet Samuel Hazo, National Book Award winner Gerald Stern, Pulitzer Prize winners Maxine Kumin, W. S. Merwin, and W. D. Snodgrass, and Reading-born master John Updike. The book’s 103 poets also include such noted authors as Diane Ackerman, Maggie Anderson, Jan Beatty, Robin Becker, Jim Daniels, Toi Derricotte, Gary Fincke, Harry Humes, Julia Kasdorf, Ed Ochester, Jay Parini, Len Roberts, Sonia Sanchez, Betsy Sholl, and Judith Vollmer. In these pages, poems sketch the landscapes and cultural terrain of the state, delving into the history, traditions, and people of Philadelphia, “Dutch” country, the coal-mining region, the Poconos, and the Lehigh Valley; the Three Rivers region; the Laurel Highlands; and Erie and the Allegheny National Forest. Theirs is a complex narrative cultivated for centuries in coal mines, kitchens, elevated trains, and hometowns, a tale that illuminates the sanctity of the commonplace—the daily chores of a Mennonite housewife, a polka dance in Coaldale, the late shift at a steel factory, the macadam of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. With its panoramic vision of Pennsylvania, its culture, and its thriving literary heritage, Common Wealth is a collection of remembrance for a state that continues to inspire countless contributions to American literature.
Book Synopsis Arabic and Hebrew Love Poems in Al-Andalus by : Shari Lowin
Download or read book Arabic and Hebrew Love Poems in Al-Andalus written by Shari Lowin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arabic and Hebrew Love Poems in al-Andalus investigates a largely overlooked subset of Muslim and Jewish love poetry in medieval Spain: hetero- and homo-erotic love poems written by Muslim and Jewish religious scholars, in which the lover and his sensual experience of the beloved are compared to scriptural characters and storylines. This book examines the ways in which the scriptural referents fit in with, or differ from, the traditional Andalusian poetic conventions. The study then proceeds to compare the scriptural stories and characters as presented in the poems with their scriptural and exegetical sources. This new intertextual analysis reveals that the Jewish and Muslim scholar-poets utilized their sacred literature in their poems of desire as more than poetic ornamentation; in employing Qur’ānic heroes in their secular verses, the Muslim poets presented a justification of profane love and sanctification of erotic human passions. In the Hebrew lust poems, which utilize biblical heroes, we can detect subtle, subversive, and surprisingly placed interpretations of biblical accounts. Moving beyond the concern with literary history to challenge the traditional boundaries between secular and religious poetry, this book provides a new, multidisciplinary, approach to existing materials and will be of interest to students, scholars and researchers of Islamic and Jewish Studies as well as to those with an interest in Hebrew and Arabic poetry of Islamic Spain.

Book Synopsis Samuel Barber by : Barbara B. Heyman
Download or read book Samuel Barber written by Barbara B. Heyman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-27 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Barber (1910-1981) is one of the most admired and honored American composers of the twentieth century. An unabashed Romantic, largely independent of worldwide trends and the avant-garde, he infused his works with poetic lyricism and gave tonal language and forms new vitality. His rich legacy includes every genre, including the famous Adagio for Strings, Knoxville: Summer of 1915, three concertos, a plethora of songs, and two operas, the Pulitzer prize-winning Vanessa, and Antony and Cleopatra, the commissioned work that opened the new Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in 1966. Generously documented by letter, sketches, autograph manuscripts, and interviews with friends, colleagues, and performers with whom he worked, this ASCAP-Award winning book is still unquestionably the most authoritative biography on Barber, covering his entire career and interweaving the events of his life with his compositional process. This second edition benefits from many new discoveries, including a Violin Sonata recovered from an artist's estate, a diary Barber kept his seventeenth year, a trove of letters and manuscripts that were recovered from a suitcase found in a dumpster, documentation that dispels earlier myths about the composition of Barber's Violin Concerto, and research of scholars that was stimulated by Heyman's work. Barber's intimate relations are discussed when they bear on his creativity. A testament to the lasting significance of Romanticism, Samuel Barber stands as a model biography of an important musical figure.

Book Synopsis Fire Is Not a Country by : Cynthia Dewi Oka
Download or read book Fire Is Not a Country written by Cynthia Dewi Oka and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her third collection, Indonesian American poet Cynthia Dewi Oka dives into the implications of being parents, children, workers, and unwanted human beings under the savage reign of global capitalism and resurgent nativism. With a voice bound and wrestled apart by multiple histories, Fire Is Not a Country claims the spaces between here and there, then and now, us and not us. As she builds a lyric portrait of her own family, Oka interrogates how migration, economic exploitation, patriarchal violence, and a legacy of political repression shape the beauties and limitations of familial love and obligation. Woven throughout are speculative experiments that intervene in the popular apocalyptic narratives of our time with the wit of an unassimilable other. Oka’s speakers mourn, labor, argue, digress, avenge, and fail, but they do not retreat. Born of conflicts public and private, this collection is for anyone interested in what it means to engage the multitudes within ourselves.
