Book excerpt: Early on a Wednesday morning in October 2010, Karyl McKendry got the phone call that everyone dreads: Pat, her 45-year-old husband and high school sweetheart, had been killed in a car accident. Even worse, her 21-year-old son had been driving. Her life changed in that instant. Suddenly she was a young widow, living in a falling-down house, and responsible for raising four children. She was left to manage finances, funeral arrangements, and overwhelming grief-alone. Lovely Tragic Miracle is Karyl's story of the first two years of her journey as a young widow and the surprising things she learned along the way: that grief-while painful-is healing, that friends and family feel desperate to help but often don't know how, and that even in the midst of great tragedy, lovely moments surface in unexpected ways.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Read with Jenna Book Club Pick as Featured on Today • As a young mother facing a terminal diagnosis, Julie Yip-Williams began to write her story, a story like no other. What began as the chronicle of an imminent and early death became something much more—a powerful exhortation to the living. “An exquisitely moving portrait of the daily stuff of life.”—The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice) NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • Time • Real Simple • Good Housekeeping That Julie Yip-Williams survived infancy was a miracle. Born blind in Vietnam, she narrowly escaped euthanasia at the hands of her grandmother, only to flee with her family the political upheaval of her country in the late 1970s. Loaded into a rickety boat with three hundred other refugees, Julie made it to Hong Kong and, ultimately, America, where a surgeon at UCLA gave her partial sight. She would go on to become a Harvard-educated lawyer, with a husband, a family, and a life she had once assumed would be impossible. Then, at age thirty-seven, with two little girls at home, Julie was diagnosed with terminal metastatic colon cancer, and a different journey began. The Unwinding of the Miracle is the story of a vigorous life refracted through the prism of imminent death. When she was first diagnosed, Julie Yip-Williams sought clarity and guidance through the experience and, finding none, began to write her way through it—a chronicle that grew beyond her imagining. Motherhood, marriage, the immigrant experience, ambition, love, wanderlust, tennis, fortune-tellers, grief, reincarnation, jealousy, comfort, pain, the marvel of the body in full rebellion—this book is as sprawling and majestic as the life it records. It is inspiring and instructive, delightful and shattering. It is a book of indelible moments, seared deep—an incomparable guide to living vividly by facing hard truths consciously. With humor, bracing honesty, and the cleansing power of well-deployed anger, Julie Yip-Williams set the stage for her lasting legacy and one final miracle: the story of her life. Praise for The Unwinding of the Miracle “Everything worth understanding and holding on to is in this book. . . . A miracle indeed.”—Kelly Corrigan, New York Times bestselling author “A beautifully written, moving, and compassionate chronicle that deserves to be read and absorbed widely.”—Siddhartha Mukherjee, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Emperor of All Maladies

She is looking for more information about her great-grandparents to learn of her family’s heritage, which leads her in a new direction toward a new heritage! Lara learned from her great-grandfather how their lives were a continuous process of creation and with a great sensibility of achievements that contributed to the development of a new generation. All the experiences acquired with these achievements brought her grandfather a sense of a different world with a comprehensive vision, a vision of peace. But Lara sees the world as a Blood Moon, and feels something profound as she understands the whole story. Humanity is looking for a cycle of conflict linked to anguish and an imbalance of achievements, but Lara tries through simplicity and sensibility to find a happy ending. In the thirst of her dreams, she finds a single place, her silence, where she feels safe.

Book excerpt: This is a book of miracles—medical events witnessed by leading physicians for which there is no reasonable medical explanation, or, if there is, the explanation itself is extraordinary. These dramatic first-person essays detail spectacular serendipities, impossible cures, breathtaking resuscitations, extraordinary awakenings, and recovery from unimaginable disasters. Still other essays give voice to cases in which the physical aspects were less dramatic than the emotional aspects, yet miraculous and transformational for everyone involved. Positive impacts left in the wake of even the gravest of tragedies, profound triumphs of heart and spirit. Preeminent physicians in many specialties, including deans and department heads on the faculties of the top university medical schools in the country describe, in everyday language and with moving testimony, their very personal reactions to these remarkable clinical experiences. Among the extraordinary cases poignantly recounted by the physicians witnessing them: A priest visiting a hospitalized patient went into cardiac arrest on the elevator, which opened up on the cardiac floor, right at the foot of the cardiac specialist, at just the right moment. A tiny premature baby dying from irreversible lung disease despite the most intensive care who recovered almost immediately after being taken from his hospital bed and placed on his mother's chest. President John F. Kennedy's son Patrick, who died shortly after birth, and whose disease eventually led to research that saved generations of babies. A nine-year-old boy who was decapitated in a horrific car accident but survived without neurological damage. A woman who conceived and delivered a healthy baby—despite having had both of her fallopian tubes surgically removed. A young man whose only hope for survival was a heart transplant, but just at the moment he developed a potentially fatal complication making a transplant impossible, his own heart began healing itself. A teenage girl near death after contracting full-blown rabies who became the first patient ever to recover from that disease after an unexpected visit by Timothy Dolan, the man who would go on to become the Archbishop of New York. A Manhattan window-washer who fell 47 stories—and not only became the only person ever to survive a fall from that height, but went on to make a full recovery. Miracles We Have Seen is a book of inspiration and optimism, and a compelling glimpse into the lives of physicians—their humanity and determined devotion to their patients and their patients' families. It reminds us that what we don't know or don't understand isn‘t necessarily cause for fear, and can even be reason for hope

Book excerpt: This book was inspired by a meeting with Lou Albert Lasard, the last living mistress of the poet Rilke. Preface by Anais Nin. Zoe is the story of a woman and her recollections at age seventy-nine of her lifelong love, Ritter, a renowned poet. The narrative, beginning in the present-day Paris, covers one-half century scarred by two wars and falls into reminiscence of her flight from her husband and child, the all-consuming love affair, its dissolution, her adventures with other men. These memories are set against the reality of her present age. As a once young, loved, beautiful woman, Zoe is coping with the decay of age and time, yet nonetheless displays a primal vitality in her actions, emotions, and perceptions. This remarkable portrait of a womanher many selves that are born and die in others eyes, her desire to steep herself in love, her special relationship to timewas inspired by Ms. Rovit meeting in France with the last living mistress of a great writer and imagining what her life may have been like. A complement from Anais Nin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inge Fernbach Rabe was born in Germany in 1924, nine years before Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. Her early childhood years were marked with love, laughter, and happiness. Early in 1933, her innocent and carefree world began to crumble. It began slowly, with name-calling. At first she didn’t know the meaning of the word “Jew.” Although her grandfather had been Jewish, Inge had been raised in a Christian family. Under the German laws of the time, she was considered half-Jewish, and therefore “racially impure.” Her family bore the full brunt of Nazi economic sanctions when her Papa’s business was ruined. Soon she was experiencing the pain of rejection when many of her friends were no longer allowed to play with her and the disappointment of being deprived of educational opportunities. Inge and her family endured difficulties that had previously been unthinkable. She was sustained through tragic circumstances by her loving mother and a deep faith in God as her Heavenly Father. She rejoiced when Allied forces finally liberated the people of Germany, and looked forward to building a new life. After struggling for ten years in post-war Germany, she decided to immigrate to the United States. Her new adventure began on April 4, 1955. As an immigrant she had to master a new language, learn new customs, earn a living, and catch up on her education! Although she often found herself in difficult circumstances, the kindness of the American people kept her going. Years later, happily married and with a son and daughter, she looked back on her struggles and thanked God for seeing her through to better times. Happiness doesn’t last forever, though. Her husband passed away unexpectedly, leaving her to care for two young children. Once again she would have to rely on faith and determination to survive. And once again she would discover that God’s blessings do arrive in the midst of hardship! Inge is retired now, and fills her days with gardening and writing.

When the Dionne Quintuplets were born on May 28, 1934, weighing a grand total of just over 13 pounds, no one expected them to live so much as an hour. Overnight, Yvonne, Annette, Cécile, Émilie, and Marie Dionne mesmerized the globe, defying medical history with every breath they took. In an effort to protect them from hucksters and showmen, the Ontario government took custody of the five identical babies, sequestering them in a private, custom-built hospital across the road from their family--and then, in a stunning act of hypocrisy, proceeded to exploit them for the next nine years. The Dionne Quintuplets became a more popular attraction than Niagara Falls, ogled through one-way screens by sightseers as they splashed in their wading pool at the center of a tourist hotspot known as Quintland. Here, Sarah Miller reconstructs their unprecedented upbringing with fresh depth and subtlety, bringing to new light their resilience and the indelible bond of their unique sisterhood.

Book excerpt: This is a story about a very unique young man, a man who, in essence, was truly a child at heart. I came to know Tristan as someone who was filled with love for others, especially those that have been rejected by life and society. He himself was a child that had endured rejection by society in general, but also, there was rejection by some family members, as well. Yet itaEUR(tm)s a story of great triumph, a story where victory came into his life. A story of overcoming all the ugliness that life can bring into a personaEUR(tm)s life.Life has a way of bringing tragedy into oneaEUR(tm)s life, and the character of a person can be determined by the tragedies they experience. Tristan encountered his tragedy at a very young age, when he was four years old. In life, we either overcome tragedies, or they will overcome us. This is the story of how Tristan overcame his and became the wonderful child you will read about. There was much pain, suffering, heartbreak, and rejection in his short life. Yet this precious child emerged victorious when it was all said and done. He was blessed with many gifts and talents, and he was able to express these through his writings, which I have shared herein. One of his best gifts was his ability to love others despite his lifeaEUR(tm)s struggles. He had a heart of compassion for the less fortunate. He loved others with his whole heart. He was a very intelligent young man, had a great sense of humor, and was a wonderful poet. As you read his story, IaEUR(tm)m sure it will inspire and encourage others who may have experienced rejection and tragedy in their lives or in the lives of those they may know. This is my hope. His life definitely inspired me. This story is about a child who battled sexual abuse at a very young age, rejection, and drug abuse. Yet he overcame, and I hope it inspires others with the same hope, that they also can overcome. It was a great privilege for me to know this precious child, and IaEUR(tm)m sure that those who read his story will come to feel the same. ItaEUR(tm)s a story of triumph.
