Moving between public, clandestine, and online interactions, Quest for Love in Central Morocco explores the creative ways young women navigate desire and morality. Menin’s ethnography focuses on young women living in the low-income and lower-middle-class neighborhoods of a midsized town in Central Morocco, far from the overt influence of city life. At the heart of the book, Menin draws upon ideas of "love" as an ethnographic object and source of theoretical examination. She demonstrates that love, as a complex cultural and historical phenomenon shaped through intersecting socioeconomic and political developments, is crucial in thinking through generational changes and debates in Morocco and the Middle East more broadly. While mapping the multiple maneuverings of Cairene dancers and non-dancers alike, this book centralizes Cairene dancers embodied political insight while fleshing out nuanced portraits of their lives and stories amidst ongoing political precarity. In addition to interweaving Dance and Middle Eastern Gender Studies, this book innovatively 'does' and writes ethnography. This book's ethnographic approach embodies the dance itself via attending to the dual meanings of moving; centralizing mobility and movement as sites of power and knowledge, but also in researching and writing in ways that move emotionally, stirring up poignant affect that leads to physical reaction, change, and connection. By bringing male perspectives into food studies, which typically focus on the roles of women in the production and distribution of food, Nefissa Naguib demonstrates how men interact with food, in both political and domestic spheres, and how these interactions reflect important notions of masculinity in modern Egypt. In this classic ethnography, narratives about men from a broad range of educational backgrounds, age groups, and social classes capture a holistic representation of masculine identity and food in modern Egypt on familial, local, and national levels. Even the Egyptian religion was filled with tales of adultery, incest, homosexuality and masturbation, with hints of necrophilia! Masculinity and femininity itself were strongly linked with the ability to conceive and bear children. The ancient Egyptians were aware of the function of the sex act and the purpose of the male semen in that act, but there were some misconceptions as to the semen's source, its route through the female body and its eventual fertilisation of the female ovum. It is this misconception about the female body, coupled with Egyptian religious belief, that will lead the reader to some surprising conclusions about ancient Egyptian temple practices.
