Book Synopsis Recovering the Love Feast by : Paul Fike Stutzman
Download or read book Recovering the Love Feast written by Paul Fike Stutzman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a Love Feast? How did the early church celebrate the Love Feast? How might Christians today celebrate the Love Feast? In Recovering the Love Feast, Paul Stutzman addresses these questions, offering a unique blend of liturgical history and practical theology. Part I outlines the history of the Love Feast, noting its prevalence in early church worship, its gradual decline, and its reemergence in the practices of several Pietist groups (e.g., the Moravians, Methodists, and Brethren). Particular focus is given to five elements of the celebration, that is: eucharistic preparation, feetwashing, the fellowship meal, the holy kiss, and the Eucharist proper. In Part II, Stutzman argues that the Love Feast is a valuable Christian practice and a celebration worth recovering in those traditions that may have forgotten the feast. Rather than prescribing a specific method for celebrating the Love Feast, Stutzman proposes that there are five key disciplines that today's Love Feasts should embody: submission, love, confession, reconciliation, and thanksgiving. This book encourages Christians from a range of traditions to experiment with reclaiming the Love Feast, with the hope that each celebration serves as an act of worship to God and an authentic expression of Christian discipleship.

St. Aug., Ep. xxix. ad Alyp., "legebatur alternatim et psallebatur... non parva multitudine utriusque (sexus)... manente et psallente." a Cf. also Greg. Nazianz., Epist. lvii. (ccxciii.) and ccxxxii. (cxciii.). 3 It has been questioned whether these funeral and memorial feasts were Agapoe at all. My reasons for thinking that they were are briefly these, in addition to the evidence given above, p. 138: (i) That legalisation of sodalicia "religionis causa" naturally would dispose the Christians in early times to shelter their Agapse under the wing of collegia funeraticia, which all had feasts. (See Appendix II.) (2) That Tertullian in his description of the Agape (Apol. xxxix.) distinctly dwells on the " area," which was common to the Christian "corpus" with the heathen collegium, as expended "egenis alendis humandisque." (Cf. ad Martyr: 1. Inter cetera alimenta, beati martyres designati, etc., and dejejun. chap. 12, and the idea of alms-giving in connection with burials survives in the Apostolic Constitutions (viii. 42), quoted above). (3) That the language applied to these feasts is very similar to that used of the Agape, though the word Agape is scarcely ever applied to them. Cf. Constantine, Oral, ad Sand. chap, xii., aotlpoviara.ra Se iroXXwc mii speak, of the Christian Agape upon the immemorial custom of funeral feasts; and how far the distinctive features of the Agapae survived in this it is not possible to determine; but several Western writers of this period speak of such feasts in much the same terms as they apply to the Agape" proper. St. Augustine, for instance (De Moribus Eccles. cxxxiv.), says: "I know many who adore tombs and pictures, I know many who...

Download or read book Agape Love written by Sir John Templeton and published by Templeton Foundation Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tradition of agape, or unconditional love, is not exclusive to any religion. It is a primary underlying principle found in religions worldwide. The concept of altruistic love challenges the spiritual person to "love your enemies" or to "love without thought of return." It is a love that flows out to others through compassion, kindness, tenderness, and charitable giving. Buddhists have a path of compassion, where caring for others becomes the motivating force behind existence. Hindus have a branch of yoga, the heart-centered path, that leads to enlightenment through an overwhelming love for God that takes the form of loving all humanity. Eastern religions, such as Taoism and Confucianism, see transcendent love as essential to true wisdom. Love is a universal theme of love found in all religious traditions, Buddhist, Christian, Islam, or others. As we realize that all religions have this spiritual principle of love at their core, we can develop a sense of shared humanity. The religious tradition of agape love examined in this book will inspire those who are learning to grow in compassion and love for all people.

Download or read book The Agape and the Eucharist in the Early Church written by John Fitzstephen Keating and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agape and the Eucharist in the Early Church: Studies in the History of the Christian Love-Feasts The attention of scholars has lately been directed afresh to the subject of the Agape by the translation of the Canons of Hippolytus and of The Testament of our Lord, and quite recently, by the publication by Dr Hauler, from the Verona palimpsest, of the Latin Didascalia, and the Egyptian Church Order (Canonum Reliquiae), of which the one lies behind, and the other is also - but less closely - related to the Apostolic Constitutions. The present investigation does not claim to have added largely to what was already known on the subject. The Agape has long been regarded as, if not, like Mary Queen of Scots, "the eternal enigma of history," at least one of the obscurest of problems, and I do not profess to have solved it. Indeed it is very doubtful if we have the materials for its complete solution even now after these fresh discoveries. Book Synopsis Agape, Justice, and Law by : Robert F. Cochran, Jr
Download or read book Agape, Justice, and Law written by Robert F. Cochran, Jr and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a provocative essay, philosopher Jeffrie G. Murphy asks: 'what would law be like if we organized it around the value of Christian love, and if we thought about and criticized law in terms of that value?'. This book brings together leading scholars from a variety of disciplines to address that question. Scholars have given surprisingly little attention to assessing how the central Christian ethical category of love - agape - might impact the way we understand law. This book aims to fill that gap by investigating the relationship between agape and law in Scripture, theology, and jurisprudence, as well as applying these insights to contemporary debates in criminal law, tort law, elder law, immigration law, corporate law, intellectual property, and international relations. At a time when the discourse between Christian and other world views is more likely to be filled with hate than love, the implications of agape for law are crucial.
Book Synopsis Political Agape by : Timothy P. Jackson
Download or read book Political Agape written by Timothy P. Jackson and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-29 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the place of Christian love in a pluralistic society dedicated to liberty and justice for all ? What would it mean to take both Jesus Christ and Abraham Lincoln seriously and attempt to translate love of God and neighbor into every quarter of life, including law and politics? Timothy Jackson addresses such questions in Political Agape: Prophetic Christianity and Liberal Democracy. Jackson argues that love of God and neighbor is the perilously neglected civil virtue of our time and that it must be considered even before justice in structuring political principles and policies. To indicate the specific implications of civic agapism, he looks at such issues as the death penalty, Christian complicity in the Holocaust, the case for same-sex marriage, and the morality of adoption. The book concludes with Jackson s reflections on Martin Luther King Jr. as a Christian hero.
Book Synopsis Food and Faith in Christian Culture by : Ken Albala
Download or read book Food and Faith in Christian Culture written by Ken Albala and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-27 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without a uniform dietary code, Christians around the world used food in strikingly different ways, developing widely divergent practices that spread, nurtured, and strengthened their religious beliefs and communities. Featuring never-before published essays, this anthology follows the intersection of food and faith from the fourteenth to the twenty-first century, charting the complex relationship among religious eating habits and politics, culture, and social structure. Theoretically rich and full of engaging portraits, essays consider the rise of food buying and consumerism in the fourteenth century, the Reformation ideology of fasting and its resulting sanctions against sumptuous eating, the gender and racial politics of sacramental food production in colonial America, and the struggle to define "enlightened" Lenten dietary restrictions in early modern France. Essays on the nineteenth century explore the religious implications of wheat growing and breadmaking among New Zealand's Maori population and the revival of the Agape meal, or love feast, among American brethren in Christ Church. Twentieth-century topics include the metaphysical significance of vegetarianism, the function of diet in Greek Orthodoxy, American Christian weight loss programs, and the practice of silent eating rituals among English Benedictine monks. Two introductory essays detail the key themes tying these essays together and survey food's role in developing and disseminating the teachings of Christianity, not to mention providing a tangible experience of faith.
