Book excerpt: Souichiro Hino and Itsuki Aoyama and their Love Club, aka 'Ghostbusters,' think their biggest problems are solving and defeating The Seven Mysteries of Seika Academy. Souichiro sure thinks that enough for them to worry about. However, there seems to be more than seven mysteries. Not even Itsuki knows how many there may actually be, or when they might pop up and suck them into another dimension. On top of all that, there are the mysteries that come to visit on their own. First, there is the new school doctor who turns out to be a flesh eating demon with family problems. And then, there is the ghost of a little girl chasing the ghost of a little kitten. Somehow, they are connected to the teacher that's gone berserk and keeps chasing Love Club members with a broom. As Souichiro is in a near constant battle for his life and dodging the affections of all the wrong guys, he often wonders why his mother, world famous psychic, Souko Hino, thought this school was a good idea!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Souichiro Hino's mother may be a world famous psychic, but she sure has trouble keeping track of everyday details. For example, that 'wonderful' new school she sent him to was embroiled in a string of grisly murders. All of the victims were male students like Souichiro. Nor did she mention that fellow psychic and childhood friend, Itsuki Aoyama, attended the school and was expecting him to do something about all of that. And then there was Itsuki's Love Club, also known as the Ghostbusters. Somehow, his friend had gotten it into his head that a random group of kids – and one friendly spirit of a dead honor student – could take on and defeat The Seven Mysteries of Seika Academy, which actually numbered ten or more. Souichiro didn't have time to object. There was a killer Sakura tree in the garden and a portal to hell in the Emergency Stairwell. If all of this wasn't bad enough, there was that 'connection' between him and Itsuki. They hadn't seen each other for years, yet everyone treated them like a couple! Souko Hino sure had a lot of explaining to do!

Book excerpt: Example in this ebook CHAPTER I The Story of the Goblins who Stole a Sexton In an old abbey town, down in this part of the country, a long, long while ago—so long, that the story must be a true one, because our great-grandfathers implicitly believed it—there officiated as sexton and grave-digger in the churchyard, one Gabriel Grub. It by no means follows that because a man is a sexton, and constantly surrounded by the emblems of mortality, therefore he should be a morose and melancholy man; your undertakers are the merriest fellows in the world; and I once had the honour of being on intimate terms with a mute, who in private life, and off duty, was as comical and jocose a little fellow as ever chirped out a devil-may-care song, without a hitch in his memory, or drained off the contents of a good stiff glass without stopping for breath. But, notwithstanding these precedents to the contrary, Gabriel Grub was an ill-conditioned, cross-grained, surly fellow—a morose and lonely man, who consorted with nobody but himself, and an old wicker bottle which fitted into his large deep waistcoat pocket—and who eyed each merry face, as it passed him by, with such a deep scowl of malice and ill-humour, as it was difficult to meet, without feeling something the worse for. “A little before twilight, one Christmas Eve, Gabriel shouldered his spade, lighted his lantern, and betook himself towards the old churchyard; for he had got a grave to finish by next morning, and, feeling very low, he thought it might raise his spirits, perhaps, if he went on with his work at once. As he went his way, up the ancient street, he saw the cheerful light of blazing fires gleam through[2] the old casements, and heard the loud laugh and the cheerful shouts of those who were assembled around them; he marked the bustling preparations for next day’s cheer, and smelt the numerous savoury odours consequent thereupon, as they steamed up from the kitchen windows in clouds. All this was gall and wormwood to the heart of Gabriel Grub: and when groups of children bounded out of the houses, tripped across the road, and were met, before they could knock at the opposite door, by half a dozen curly-headed little rascals who crowded round them as they flocked up-stairs to spend the evening in their Christmas games, Gabriel smiled grimly, and clutched the handle of his spade with a firmer grasp, as he thought of measles, scarlet-fever, thrush, hooping-cough, and a good many other sources of consolation besides. “In this happy frame of mind, Gabriel strode along: returning a short, sullen growl to the good-humoured greetings of such of his neighbours as now and then passed him: until he turned into the dark lane which led to the churchyard. Now, Gabriel had been looking forward to reaching the dark lane, because it was, generally speaking, a nice, gloomy, mournful place, into which the townspeople did not much care to go, except in broad daylight, and when the sun was shining; consequently, he was not a little indignant to hear a young urchin roaring out some jolly song about a merry Christmas, in this very sanctuary, which had been called Coffin Lane ever since the days of the old abbey, and the time of the shaven-headed monks. As Gabriel walked on, and the voice drew nearer, he found it proceeded from a small boy, who was hurrying along, to join one of the little parties in the old street, and who, partly to keep himself company, and partly to prepare himself for the occasion, was shouting out the song at the highest pitch of his lungs. So Gabriel waited until the boy came up, and then dodged him into a corner, and rapped him over the head with his lantern five or six times, to teach him to modulate his voice. And as the boy hurried away with his hand to his head, singing quite a different sort of tune, Gabriel Grub chuckled very heartily to himself, and entered the churchyard: locking the gate behind him. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That St. Louis Thing is an American story of music, race relations and baseball. Here is over 100 years of the cityÕs famed musical development -- blues, jazz and rock -- placed in the context of its civil rights movement and its political and ecomomic power. Here, too, are the cityÕs people brought alive from its foundation to the racial conflicts in Ferguson in 2014. The panorama of the city presents an often overlooked gem, music that goes far beyond famed artists such as Scott Joplin, Miles Davis and Tina Turner. The city is also the scene of a historic civil rights movement that remained important from its early beginnings into the twenty-first century. And here, too, are the sounds of the crack of the bat during a century-long love affair with baseball.

Book Synopsis Performing the Nation by : Kelly Askew
Download or read book Performing the Nation written by Kelly Askew and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2002-07-28 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its founding in 1964, the United Republic of Tanzania has used music, dance, and other cultural productions as ways of imagining and legitimizing the new nation. Focusing on the politics surrounding Swahili musical performance, Kelly Askew demonstrates the crucial role of popular culture in Tanzania's colonial and postcolonial history. As Askew shows, the genres of ngoma (traditional dance), dansi (urban jazz), and taarab (sung Swahili poetry) have played prominent parts in official articulations of "Tanzanian National Culture" over the years. Drawing on over a decade of research, including extensive experience as a taarab and dansi performer, Askew explores the intimate relations among musical practice, political ideology, and economic change. She reveals the processes and agents involved in the creation of Tanzania's national culture, from government elites to local musicians, poets, wedding participants, and traffic police. Throughout, Askew focuses on performance itself—musical and otherwise—as key to understanding both nation-building and interpersonal power dynamics.

Book Synopsis The Story of the Stone: The Crab-Flower Club by : Cao Xueqin
Download or read book The Story of the Stone: The Crab-Flower Club written by Cao Xueqin and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Story of the Stone" (c. 1760), also known as "The Dream of the Red Chamber", is one of the greatest novels of Chinese literature. The fifth part of Cao Xueqin's magnificent saga, "The Dreamer Awakes", was carefully edited and completed by Gao E some decades later. It continues the story of the changing fortunes of the Jia dynasty, focussing on Bao-yu, now married to Bao-chai, after the tragic death of his beloved Dai-yu. Against such worldly elements as death, financial ruin, marriage, decadence and corruption, his karmic journey unfolds. Like a sleepwalker through life, Bao-yu is finally awakened by a vision, which reveals to him that life itself is merely a dream, 'as moonlight mirrored in the water'.
