Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisville's First Families: A Series of Genealogical Sketches Typical of the gentlefolk who came to the Kentucky frontier in the last thirty years of the Eighteenth century are the twelve families grouped in this series, known as Louisville's First Families. An effort has been made to picture the early social life of Louisville as inaugurated by the twelve families included and by similar families of culture and refinement that emigrated from Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania to the wilderness in the late seventeen hundreds. From family records and traditions that have come down, verbally, through the several generations, material was obtained with which to illustrate the permanency of these families in the city, listing the descendants of the pioneers, to link the Eighteenth century with the Twentieth, and to indicate the shaping influence of such people upon the growth of a community. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When John Clark Married Ann Rogers in 1749 in Virginia, they would eventually produce ten children six sons and four daughters. Like most early American rural couples, John and Ann thought that they were raising farm hands and kitchen help. Little did they dream that their children and two more generations of Clarks would have such a great impact on Americas development from coast to coast. Three of the Clark sons would become officers, and help to win the Revolutionary War in the east. George Rogers Clark would become a general and win the Revolution in the west thus giving America the eastern one third of the continent. George would also found Louisville, and the state of Kentucky. William Clark, as the youngest Clark son, was seventeen years younger than big brother George his hero. William would also pursue a military career, and partner with Meriwether Lewis to explore the Louisiana Purchase thus giving America the middle third of the continent. William would later become a great Indian diplomat, and help to establish the state of Missouri. Williams son Meriwether Lewis, Sr. (Lewis) would go to West Point, become a famous architect, and fight in three wars. They included the Mexican War, which gave America the western third of the continent. Lewis son Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. (Lutie) would basically save the thoroughbred industry in Kentucky and America after the Civil War. He created the pari-mutuel system of betting, set up racing rules, and started Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby all of which still exist. John and Ann Clark and all of the other living off-springs eventually moved to Louisville, and added to the Clarks of Kentucky.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the Vast and Beautiful Land gathers eleven essays written by Light Townsend Cummins, a foremost authority on Texas and Louisiana during the Spanish colonial era, and traces the arc of the author’s career over a quarter of a century. Each essay includes a new introduction linking the original article to current scholarship and forms the connective tissue for the volume. A new bibliography updates and supplements the sources cited in the essays. From the “enduring community” of Anglo-American settlers in colonial Natchez to the Gálvez family along the Gulf Coast and their participation in the American Revolution, Cummins shows that mercantile commerce and land acquisition went hand-in-hand as dual motivations for the migration of English-speakers into Louisiana and Texas. Mercantile trade dominated by Anglo-Americans increasingly tied the Mississippi valley and western Gulf Coast to the English-speaking ports of the Atlantic world bridging two centuries, shifting it away from earlier French and Spanish commercial patterns. As a result, Anglo-Americans moved to the region as residents and secured land from Spanish authorities, who often welcomed them with favorable settlement policies. This steady flow of settlement set the stage for families such as the Austins—first Moses and later his son Stephen—to take root and further “Anglocize” a colonial region. Taken together, To the Vast and Beautiful Land makes a new contribution to the growing literature on the history of the Spanish borderlands in North America.
