Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "John Morris Wampler was a topographical engineer in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States and eventually became chief engineer of the Confederate Army of Tennessee. Based on extensive use of Wampler's unpublished correspondence and journals, the biography follows his experiences before hostilities and then during the war in both major theaters. It also draws on the writings of his wife, Kate, to show how she struggled to hold their family together during the fighting. The combination of both the husband and wife's perspectives on the war makes this treatment unique."--Jacket.
Download or read book Leesburg written by Mary Fishback and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003-07-23 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once serving as the capital of the United States for three days, the town of Leesburg, Virginia stands at the crossroads of American history. As a rural hinterland of the Washington, D.C. area and situated on the northern fringe of the old Confederacy, Leesburg has seen troops and generals, travelers and settlers, and politicians and presidents walk its streets, and opposing political views tear its population apart. Unity and patriotism returned and characterized the town during the world wars. With the arrival of nearby Dulles International Airport in the 1960s, Leesburg and its surrounding towns experienced a different kind of movement-tremendous population growth. Today, Leesburg is a vital and fast-paced part of Northern Virginia's economy. Yet, despite its modern edge, the town has maintained its old rural character and has striven to preserve its colorful 245-year-old history.

Book Synopsis Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names by : Urs Eggli
Download or read book Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names written by Urs Eggli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Names are important elements to handle the diversity of items in daily life - persons, objects, animals, plants, etc. Without such names, it would be difficult to attach information to such items and to communicate information about them, and names are usually used without giving them much thought. This is not different for plants. When dealing with plants, however, it soon becomes apparent that the situation is somewhat more complex. Botanists use Latin names to bring order into the vast diversity, while everyday usage resorts to vemacular or "popular" names. As practical as these vernacular names are (it is not suggested that you should ask your greengrocer for a kilo gram of Solanum tuberosum or Musa paradisiaca subsp. sapientum), their most important draw back is the fact that they vary widely, not only from one language to another but also from coun try to country, even from region to region within a large country. More importantly, vemacular names in any given language are usually only available for the plants growing locally, or for plants of some special importance, such as crops and vegetables, medicinal plants, or important garden plants. For all other plants, the Latin names used by botanists and other scientists have to be employed. Such names often appear complicated or even awkward to the ears of those not accustomed to them.

Book Synopsis The Bulloch Belles by : Walter E. Wilson
Download or read book The Bulloch Belles written by Walter E. Wilson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bulloch women of Roswell, Georgia, were not typical antebellum Southern belles. Most were well educated world travelers skilled at navigating social circles far outside the insular aristocracy of the rural South. Their lives were filled with intrigue, espionage, scandal, adversity and perseverance. During the Civil War they eluded Union spies on land and blockaders at sea and afterwards they influenced the national debate on equal rights for women. The impact of their Southern ideals increased exponentially when they integrated into the Roosevelt family of New York. Drawing on primary sources, this book provides new insight into the private lives of the women closely linked with the Bulloch family. They include four first ladies, a Confederate spy, the mother of President Teddy Roosevelt and a number of his closest confidants. Nancy Jackson, the family's nursemaid slave, is among the less well known but equally fascinating Bulloch women.
Book Synopsis The Afterlife of John Fitzgerald Kennedy by : Michael J. Hogan
Download or read book The Afterlife of John Fitzgerald Kennedy written by Michael J. Hogan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his new book, Michael J. Hogan, a leading historian of the American presidency, offers a new perspective on John Fitzgerald Kennedy, as seen not from his life and times but from his afterlife in American memory. The Afterlife of John Fitzgerald Kennedy considers how Kennedy constructed a popular image of himself, in effect, a brand, as he played the part of president on the White House stage. The cultural trauma brought on by his assassination further burnished that image and began the process of transporting Kennedy from history to memory. Hogan shows how Jacqueline Kennedy, as the chief guardian of her husband's memory, devoted herself to embedding the image of the slain president in the collective memory of the nation, evident in the many physical and literary monuments dedicated to his memory. Regardless of critics, most Americans continue to see Kennedy as his wife wanted him remembered: the charming war hero, the loving husband and father, and the peacemaker and progressive leader who inspired confidence and hope in the American people.
