Book excerpt: Book Five in the harrowing and heartwarming Supper Club Mystery series by New York Times bestselling author Ellery Adams! “Sprinkled with delightful characters and topped off with a dash of suspense.” —Romantic Times Book Reviews Librarian James Henry and the supper club will have more than enough food for thought trying to count calories and catch a killer . . . Reluctantly visiting humble Quincy’s Gap to create a special wedding cake, celebrity chef the “Diva of Dough” is not nearly as sweet as her delectable confections, and it’s just a matter of time before she alienates everyone she meets. When her corpse is discovered, covered in cake batter no less, there are more than a few locals who think she got her just desserts. And despite their own distaste for the woman, James and his friends know they have to rise to the occasion and solve the murder. With clues and suspects few and far between, the supper club members realize that catching the culprit will be anything but a cake walk. And when a second victim turns up dead, they’ll have to quickly discard any half-baked notions about the killer . . . before they all get iced. Includes mouthwatering recipes! This is a brand-new, fully revised edition of a book originally published under the name J. B. Stanley. Praise for the Supper Club Mystery Series: “Heavy on fun, light on gore, this savory mystery comes complete with yummy recipes.” ―Publishers Weekly “Foodies will love the recipes and fans the new adventures of the five friends.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: 2022 IPPY Silver Medal 2021 Foreword Indies Gold Winner for History 2021-22 Reader Views Literary Awards Silver Medal Winner 2021 Best Book Awards Finalist in US History sponsored by American Book Fest A Second Reckoning tells the story of John Snowden, a Black man accused of the murder of a pregnant white woman in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1917. He refused to confess despite undergoing torture, was tried--through legal shenanigans--by an all-white jury, and was found guilty on circumstantial evidence and sentenced to death. Despite hair-raising, last-minute appeals to spare his life, Snowden was hanged for the crime. But decades after his death, thanks to tireless efforts by interested citizens and family members who believed him a victim of a "legal lynching," Snowden was pardoned posthumously by the governor of Maryland in 2001. A Second Reckoning uses Snowden's case to bring posthumous pardons into the national conversation about amends for past racial injustices. Scott D. Seligman argues that the repeal of racist laws and policies must be augmented by reckoning with America's judicial past, especially in cases in which prejudice may have tainted procedures or perverted verdicts, evidence of bias survives, and a constituency exists for a second look. Seligman illustrates the profound effects such acts of clemency have on the living and ends with a siren call for a reexamination of such cases on the national level by the Department of Justice, which officially refuses to consider them.

Book excerpt: "Family Nibbles - Volume 6, Stories of Our Jarvis Ancestors 1865-1920" is a compilation of stories from the blog site familynibbles.com. These stories include genealogy research on one line of Jarvis families in Indiana and Kansas. This volume begins after the Civil War and follows our Jarvis families through the end of World War I. In 1865 the Civil War was over. Three generations of Jarvises lived in southeast Indiana – Harvey and Sarah, Joseph and Martha, and Newton. By the early 1910s, these generations had died out. There remained Jarvis families in Indiana, but our next generation, Ralph Jarvis, came west to Kansas. By the end of World War I, Ralph would marry and set down roots in Kansas. This volume is also dedicated to two technological wonders of this era. 1. This is the first volume in which we have photographs of our grandparents! That adds a wonderful new dimension to our memories of them. 2. The electric light illuminated homes and lives! Our grandparent Ralph Jarvis worked in this new industry, and it brought him to Kansas and his future wife.
