Wrong Maybe it was because of my age, 82, that I was unable to sit back and dictate to a stenographer, or into a tape recorder, a flow of the events and influences that shaped my personality and my life. Instead, I spent over two years sitting at my computer's "Microsoft Word", searching my mind, my pilot's log book, and diaries, slowly eking out one sentence, one paragraph and then one page. Time was allocated to this endeavor on a "I have nothing else to do" attitude. With the Oregon rain, soaking the golf course into an unplayable mire, I was able to pacify my longing for a game by turning on the word processor and succumbing to the pleasure of reliving my younger days. The cover jacket of this book was designed by my graphic artist son, Jay, to depict my personality as a "free spirit" and as a serious Certified Public Accountant.

Book excerpt: Charcoal Foundry, the first book in the "Metal Working Shop From Scrap Series", gives you plans for building a metal melting furnace and instructions on basic pattern making and molding. All the information needed to set up a foundry in your work shop can be found in this book. Simply stated, if you can build a sand castle or make a mud pie, you can make a sand mold to produce castings for your metal shop projects. The main ingredient in these projects is scrap aluminum and pot metal. The only tools you need to get started are ordinary home shop hand tools, many of which are probably already in your possession. Much of the remainder is found as salvage or cast-off and little expense need be involved. The charcoal foundry is simple to build and operate and the initial cost is so low that it can be in the reach of nearly anyone. And the fundamentals of pattern-making and molding are easily understood and mastered. Once you have built the charcoal foundry and the metal lathe in book 2, there is little beyond your reach by way of shop equipment. Build as large or small as you wish and you are your own parts supply company. If you already have some machine shop equipment, you will find that adding a foundry to your shop greatly expands your capacity. Being able to produce your own castings for accessories and equipment is a great advantage. Design your own, make a copy or follow a plan. It's easy when you're in control and can produce your own castings.

This is a book to show you how to bring your own creations to casting ready sculpture. But if you do want to sculpt a horse, you will come out with some great ideas to make yours even better. For artists who use other media, there is a great deal of wonderful information on all aspects of marketing and managing your art business. It is a business, and Gabe feels that is must be treated as such if an artist wants to make a profit and to make a living selling their work. It is all there, how to start and utilize a mailing list; there is a discussion on show vehicles and various art displays, (with information on building your own,) show clothing and manners, types of shows, galleries, your home office and computer. Look for letters to Dear Aunt Gabby and her often rather pointed advice. Aunt Gabby has heard it all, from artists and buyers to show promoters. Aunt Gabby is not an art critic,( she thinks there are enough of those), but she can be highly critical of artists and their behaviors. In short, this is a book by an artist for artists, though Gabe does hope that art collectors will find it irresistible, too.
