Book excerpt: This is a new translation from the original Russian manuscript of Gogol's classic "The Lost Letter". This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. A humorous story about a Cossack who loses an official letter and the ensuing chaos and adventures he faces while trying to retrieve it. The sexton tells the story of his grandfather's adventure in hell. Once, when his grandfather was sent to deliver a letter to the Tsarina (apparently the Empress Elisabeth), he came across a fair in Konotop where he met a Zaporozhian Cossack. They quickly become friends and drink to each other's health. During their carousel, the Cossack reveals that he has sold his soul to the devil, and if he were a true friend, he would promise to stay up and watch over him that night so that he would be safe.

An extraordinary love that surpasses description. They live in a time when handwritten letters were important and, sometimes, the only means of communication. Their story starts when they are in their teens living in the early 1960s and then travel through their respective lives as they encounter pain, betrayal, and regret. They go through a time of change which includes war, upheaval in the United States, and terrible loss. Mary Grace and Ethan's story reveals how one action from one individual can change the course of peoples' lives and, ultimately, puts one to the test concerning forgiveness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Letters of Mary Penry, Scott Paul Gordon provides unprecedented access to the intimate world of a Moravian single sister. This vast collection of letters—compiled, transcribed, and annotated by Gordon—introduces readers to an unmarried woman who worked, worshiped, and wrote about her experience living in Moravian religious communities at the time of the American Revolution and early republic. Penry, a Welsh immigrant and a convert to the Moravian faith, was well connected in both the international Moravian community and the state of Pennsylvania. She counted among her acquaintances Elizabeth Sandwith Drinker and Hannah Callender Sansom, two American women whose writings have also been preserved, in addition to members of some of the most prominent families in Philadelphia, such as the Shippens, the Franklins, and the Rushes. This collection brings together more than seventy of Penry’s letters, few of which have been previously published. Gordon’s introduction provides a useful context for understanding the letters and the unique woman who wrote them. This collection of Penry’s letters broadens perspectives on early America and the eighteenth-century Moravian Church by providing a sustained look at the spiritual and social life of a single woman at a time when singleness was extraordinarily rare. It also makes an important contribution to the recovery of women’s voices in early America, amplifying views on politics, religion, and social networks from a time when few women’s perspectives on these subjects have been preserved.

Book excerpt: An authentic collection of over 150 letters from a World War I soldier to his beloved, beginning with his deployment from his Chicago hometown in 1917, until the end of the war in late 1918. His very eloquent letters bring the reader inside a WWI soldier's life, from boot camp in Fort Logan, Texas, to the trenches of France. He chronicles, firsthand, many familiar historical figures and events, while depicting both the similarities and changes in American life almost a century ago. Recently, additional letters were added, provided by the soldier's family.

This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century, when the Hudson’s Bay Company sent men to its furthest posts along the coast of North America’s Pacific Northwest, the letters of those who cared for those men followed them in the Company’s supply ships. Sometimes, these letters missed their objects – the men had returned to Britain, or deserted their ships, or died. The Company returned the correspondence to its London office and over the years amassed a file of “undelivered letters.” Many of these remained sealed for 150 years and until they were opened by archivist Judith Hudson Beattie, when the Company archives were moved to Canada. These letters tell the fascinating stories of ordinary people whose lives are rarely recounted in traditional histories. Beattie and Helen M. Buss skilfully introduce us to both the lives of the letter writers and their would-be recipients. Their commentaries frame, for contemporary readers, the words of early nineteenth century working and middle class British folk as well as letters to “voyageurs” from Quebec. The stories of their lives – fathers struggling to support a family, widowed mothers yearning to see their sons, bereft sweethearts left behind, and wives raising their children alone – reach out over two centuries to offer rare insight into the varied worlds of men and women in the early nineteenth century, many of whom became settlers in Washington, Oregon, and the new British colony of Vancouver Island.

Paul was writing primarily to converts who had joined church communities only recently, mostly forsaking either Judaism or paganism. Paul's emphases on faithfulness toward God, the faithfulness of Jesus, and his moral teachings are always primary themes. The book discusses a range of topics: the circumstances that led Paul to write each letter; Paul's emphasis on the morality of the believers to whom he was writing; the influence of Old Testament, Qumran, and pagan writings on Paul's own; the intellectual and cultural context of the time; and how careful attention to Paul's language can shed light on his meaning. This book is written for a wide range of interested readers, including students, pastors, church workers and others interested in learning about Paul as a person and his work.
