Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you think of something being lost at sea, you imagine a ship sinking gracefully, the survivors being rescued or a tragedy being caught on camera. But what if a ship is lost at sea without trace? What if an aircraft takes off on a routine flight and is never seen again? This book details over fifty of the most mysterious vanishings, ships that have made headlines but have never been found, both famous and forgotten cases that have left an outward ripple of tragedy and mystique. Most people have heard of the Mary Celeste crew vanishing, but how many knew that this was not the last case of an entire crew going missing? What about the three Scottish lighthouse keepers who were never seen again? Or the world famous aviation pioneers who took flight to never return? This book will tell you that MH370 was not the first airliner to disappear over the sea, nor was the Bermuda Triangle actually the cause of so many disappearing ships. How could six airplanes disappear in one day? Why did a ship with over 300 people on board not send a single distress call? Which ships vanished and then later messages in a bottle suddenly turn up, not just once but two separate shipwrecks? Lost at Sea in Mysterious Circumstances will cover all these and more as we reveal the stories of some of the most fascinating incidents above and below the waves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this hardbound edition of the 4th novel in the series, Tom is asked to help save the crew of a nuclear submarine, and then to recover the actual sub before it can be claimed as salvage and stripped of its top secrets. His efforts lead him to being requested to undertake a monumental task: locating and recovering the more than half-dozen ""lost"" nuclear submarines sitting on the bottom of several of the Earth's oceans. More than that, he must also find their nuclear-tipped torpedoes and reactors, some of which are no longer with the hull. With nothing available from his own company, it looks hopeless until the Navy loans him a holdover from the Cold War, a submarine carrier capable of holding and launching several attack class subs. He refits it for the mission and sets out only to discover that saboteurs, spies, possible terrorists and even foreign governments are out to see him fail.

Book excerpt: Mexican settlers first came to the valley of the Rio Grande to establish their ranchos in the 1750s. Two centuries later the Great River, dammed in an international effort by the U.S. and Mexican governments to provide flood control and a more dependable water supply, inundated twelve settlements that had been built there. Under the waters of the new Falcón Reservoir lay homes, businesses, churches, and cemeteries abandoned by residents on both sides of the river when the floods of 1953 filled the 115,000-acre area two years ahead of schedule. The Smithsonian Institution, the National Park Service, and the University of Texas at Austin conducted an initial survey of the communities lost to the Falcón Reservoir, but these studies were never completed or fully reported. When architect W. Eugene George came to the area in the 1960s, he found a way of life waiting to be preserved in words, photographs, and drawings. Two subsequent recessions of the reservoir—in 1983–86 and again in 1996–98—gave George new access to one of the settlements, Guerrero Viejo in Mexico. Unfortunately, the receding lake waters also made the village accessible to looters. George’s work, then, was crucial in documenting the indigenous architecture of these villages, both as it existed prior to the flooding and as it remained before it was despoiled by vandals’ hands. Lost Architecture of the Rio Grande Borderlands combines George’s original 1975 Texas Historical Commission report with the information he gleaned during the two low-water periods. This handsome, extended photographic essay casts new light on the architecture and lives of the people of the Texas-Mexico borderlands.

Book excerpt: Enthusiasm and nerves are running high on board the nuclear-powered Coast Guard cutter Broadsword as the crew prepares for their maiden voyage. Confident that they have prepared and trained for every possible contingency during their deployment, they are eager to get underway. But a new storm brewing in the Gulf of Mexico is about to sweep these sailors into truly uncharted waters. As the winds settle, chaos reigns on the command deck. Instruments are malfunctioning, and the crew struggles to make sense of nonsensical readings. The only explanation seems impossible, but soon it's one they have no choice but to accept as their new reality. They have been transported back to the Mid-Cretaceous, a voyage of nearly 92 million years into the planet's past. It's a time of unrecognizable peril and challenge for the crew, where incredible beasts control land, sea, and air. A warm and humid Earth presents a changing landscape of geologic instability, super storms, and shifting continents. Lead by the enigmatic JD Stoner, the ragtag crew races to understand their new situation and find a way home. Survival is far from guaranteed in an environment rife with danger that none of them is equipped to handle. Can a group of twenty-first-century humans survive long enough to make it back to their own time?

Book excerpt: A fascinating survey of the entire history of tall tales, folklore, and mythology in the United States from earliest times to the present, including stories and myths from the modern era that have become an essential part of contemporary popular culture. Folklore has been a part of American culture for as long as humans have inhabited North America, and increasingly formed an intrinsic part of American culture as diverse peoples from Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania arrived. In modern times, folklore and tall tales experienced a rejuvenation with the emergence of urban legends and the growing popularity of science fiction and conspiracy theories, with mass media such as comic books, television, and films contributing to the retelling of old myths. This multi-volume encyclopedia will teach readers the central myths and legends that have formed American culture since its earliest years of settlement. Its entries provide a fascinating glimpse into the collective American imagination over the past 400 years through the stories that have shaped it. Organized alphabetically, the coverage includes Native American creation myths, "tall tales" like George Washington chopping down his father's cherry tree and the adventures of "King of the Wild Frontier" Davy Crockett, through to today's "urban myths." Each entry explains the myth or legend and its importance and provides detailed information about the people and events involved. Each entry also includes a short bibliography that will direct students or interested general readers toward other sources for further investigation. Special attention is paid to African American folklore, Asian American folklore, and the folklore of other traditions that are often overlooked or marginalized in other studies of the topic.
