Book excerpt: A new algorithm for modeling and simulation of lossy interconnect structures modeled by transmission lines with Frequency Independent Line Parameters (FILP) or Frequency Dependent Line Parameters (FDLP) is developed in this research. Since frequency-dependent RLGC parameters must be employed to correctly model skin effects and dielectric losses for high-performance interconnects, we first study the behaviors of various lossy interconnects that are characterized by FILP and FDLP. Current general macromodeling methods and Model Order Reduction (MOR) algorithms are discussed. Next, some canonical integrals that are associated with transient responses of lossy transmission lines with FILP are presented. By using contour integration techniques, these integrals can be represented as closed-form expressions involving special functions, i.e., Incomplete Lipshitz-Hankel Integrals (ILHIs) and Complementary Incomplete Lipshitz-Hankel Integrals (CILHIs). Various input signals, such as ramp signals and the exponentially decaying sine signals, are used to test the expressions involving ILHIs and CILHIs. Excellent agreements are observed between the closed-form expressions involving ILHIs and CILHIs and simulation results from commercial simulation tools. We then developed a frequency-domain Dispersive Hybrid Phase-Pole Macromodel (DHPPM) for lossy transmission lines with FDLP, which consists of a constant RLGC propagation function multiplied by a residue series. The basic idea is to first extract the dominant physical phenomenology by using a propagation function in the frequency domain that is modeled by FILP. A rational function approximation is then used to account for the remaining effects of FDLP lines. By using a partial fraction expansion and analytically evaluating the required inverse Fourier transform integrals, the time-domain DHPPM can be decomposed as a sum of canonical transient responses for lines with FILP for various excitations (e.g., trapezoidal and unit-step). These canonical transient responses are then expressed analytically as closed-form expressions involving ILHIs, CILHIs, and Bessel functions. The DHPPM simulator can simulate transient results for various input waveforms on both single and coupled interconnect structures. Comparisons between the DHPPM results and the results produced by commercial simulation tools like HSPICE and a numerical Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) show that the DHPPM results are very accurate.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents two new approaches for the broadband, time-domain modeling of lossy transmission lines. Each approach is based on an alternative derivation of delay extraction in order to separate the line's linear phase from its attenuation and dispersion. Augmentation networks represent the derived attenuation networks as rational function approximations. Final network models are implemented in a SPICE circuit simulator for transient analysis. The first approach to extract delay is based on the properties of the eigenvectors of the matrix exponential function in the solution to the telegrapher's equations. The resultant network contains an ideal transmission line cascaded with two asymmetrical delayless attenuation networks. When applied to a single line with constant line parameters, the resultant attenuation networks are inherently non-passive and to which accurate low-order broadband approximations are not possible. The effects of alternative mathematical techniques such as factorization, forcing reciprocity, and eigenvector normalization or scaling, are applied to determine if passive, low-order approximations of the augmentation networks are obtainable. The second approach utilizes a similarity transformation at each transmission line port to obtain commutable matrix exponentials in order to extract delay. The resulting model includes a cascade of one or more delayless networks, an ideal transmission line of unity characteristic impedance, and transformation networks at each port. This approach is applied to single and coupled lines at lengths ranging from 5 cm to 10 m and frequencies up to 5 GHz. The resultant time-domain models are accurate with low-order approximations for lines with constant, non-zero per-unit-length parameters. Lines with zero shunt conductance or frequency-dependent line parameters prove difficult to accurately model at low-orders with this approach.

Although modeling lossy transmission lines without skin effects can be carried out efficiently and accurately, including accurate skin effect model either affect accuracy or efficiency. Skin effect is accurately approximated using the simple form "A+B*sqrt(s)" at high frequencies, i.e. when "s" is large. However, this form is not passive. Passivity guarantees stability. Since a transmission line is a passive device, its model should also be passive such that the simulation depending on it is stable. If skin effect is approximated by "A+B*sqrt(s)" and directly incorporated into a model, the simulation based on that model may become unstable. In this thesis, a method to generate a passive, accurate and compact model for a lossy transmission line with skin effect is introduced. The method is developed on a RLC lumped equivalent circuit of a transmission line. By applying a passive model order reduction algorithm and exploring the properties of the transmission line equivalent circuit, we found out a novel way to map the model reduction process into solving integrals. By matching moments implicitly, a passive and accurate model for a lossy transmission line with skin effect can be generated rapidly.

The complexity of the conventional convolution approach for lossy transmission lines is reduced from O(N^2) to O(Nlog^2N) by utilizing a multilevel FFT convolution method, where N is the total number of time points. Numerical convolution formula that exploits both the analytical forms of the lossy transmission line impulse responses and adaptive time steps are developed for the multilevel FFT convolution method. A new breakpoint control scheme is also proposed to adaptively control the time step. Experimental results show the proposed approach is over 100 times faster than berkeley SPICE3 [1, 4] while remains the same accuracy.

The approach is based on developing a model for the transmission line which is structured around natural modes of oscillation unlike other transmission-line models which are based on travelling waves. The principal advantage of the new approach is that conversion of frequency-domain prototype models for the transmission lines to the time domain for use in circuit simulators is particularly straightforward and obviates the need for numerical convolution. An illustrative caseis given to confirm the efficacy of the new approach.
