Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted a loss of tail rotor effectiveness (LTE) evaluation of the JOH-58C. The JOH-58C configuration includes a directional stability augmentation system (SAS) manufactured by the SFENA Corporation, the larger-diameter tail rotor, and the improved engine fuel control. Handling qualities were evaluated at Edwards AFB, California (elevation 2302 feet). Twenty-eight flights were conducted for a total of 26.7 productive flight test hours. Primary emphasis of the evaluation was to evaluate the handling qualities of the JOH-58C in comparison to the standard OH-58C. The limited authority SAS (7% of full control travel) will not significantly reduce the conditions conducive to LTE. The overall handling qualities of the JOH-58were moderately improved compared to the standard OH-58C. The concept of a SAS which damps uncommanded yaw rates demonstrated potential for reducing conditions conducive to LTE. However, the limited authority SAS saturated at small yaw rates (deg/sec) and did not significantly reduce the characteristic high yaw rates and moderate yaw attitude excursions observed in the JOH-58C. The JOH-58C exhibited moderate pitch, roll, and yaw excursions at 15 to 25 KTAS in azimuths from 240 degrees clockwise to 280 degrees. This characteristic was a shortcoming, upgraded from a deficiency for the standard OH-58C. Five additional shortcomings, of which four were previously identified in the standard OH-58C, were noted.

Book excerpt: An H-21D helicopter with the Vertol stability augmentation system (SAS) and differential-deltathree was evaluated. The differential-deltathree was found to provide acceptable longitudinal dynamic stability and allow hands-off flight (longitudinally) for periods of up to 1 minute. The longitudinal channel of the SAS also provided positive longitudinal stability and allowed hands-off flight for periods of at least 1 minute. With the SAS operating, the response to a longitudinal disturbance was (jerky) and was considered objectionable in rough air. It must be noted that the differential-delta-three was operating at all times and therefore a double correction for longitudinal disturbances was present with the SAS operating. The lateral stability provided by the SAS was considered excellent. However, the reduction in lateral control response and the nature of the response (a 1 inch step input results in a fixed bank angle and does not maintain a roll rate) with SAS operating were objectionable. The SAS did not improve directional flying qualities, and some loss of directional control response was noted in hover. (Author).

Book excerpt: A limited handling qualities evaluation of the OH-58A helicopter with a Bell Helicopter Model 570B three-axis stability and control augmentation system installed was conducted to determine its capability to perform instrument flight. Testing was performed by the US Army Aviation Systems Test Activity at Edwards Air Force Base, California. The testing consisted of 25 productive flight hours and was conducted from September through November 1972. The evaluation revealed significant improvements in the aircraft handling qualities with the addition of the augmentation system. The most significant enhancing characteristics provided by the equipment were: (1) increased damping of the lateral-directional oscillation (Dutch roll), (2) improvement of aircraft spiral stability from neutral to convergent, and (3) reduction in pilot effort required to maintain trim flight conditions. This evaluation was of limited scope, and primarily addressed handling qualities. It did not provide a basis to qualify the aircraft for instrument flight.

Book excerpt: A limited handling qualities evaluation of the OH-58A helicopter incorporating the SFENA 3-axis stability augmentation system called Ministab was performed by the United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity at Edwards Air Force Base, California. The system identified as the SFENA Ministab stability augmentation system was manufactured by the Societe Francaise d'Equipements pour la Navigation Aerienne (SFENA) of France and made available for test by Kaiser Aerospace and Electronics Corporation of Palo Alto, California, who also installed and maintained the system during testing. The testing consisted of 11.2 productive flight hours and was conducted from 20 July through 24 August 1974. This evaluation was of limited scope and consisted of both quantitative data and qualitative pilot comments. The test results show significant improvements in the aircraft handling qualities with the addition of Ministab.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A feasibility test of the tractor tail rotor modification of the AH-1G helicopter was conducted near Fort Worth, Texas (550-feet elevation), and Alamosa, Colorado (7535-feet elevation), during the period 7 October to 19 October 1967. This test was conducted to obtain quantitative flight test data to serve as a basis for determining if the tractor tail rotor modification proposed by the contractor for the AH-1G helicopter would correct the directional control problems which currently exist on the AH-1G helicopter with the standard tail rotor configuration. This test revealed that in-ground-effect (IGE) low speed directional control and IGE low speed dynamic directional stability were greatly improved by installation of the tractor tail rotor, . IGE directional control limitations with the standard tail rotor installed were encountered at approximately 8100 pounds gross weight near sea level in previous tests. This test with the tractor tail rotor did not reveal any IGE directional control limitations at approximately 8940 pounds gross weight and near sea level. The test results indicate that additional directional control could be obtained with the tractor tail rotor, if the geometry of the directional control system were changed to negate the adverse effects of the stability and control augmentation system (SCAS) on the ability to obtain full left tail rotor pitch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes the design and flight tests of a hydrofluidic yaw stability augmentation system (SAS) for an OH-58A helicopter. The design objective was to improve stability characteristics in yaw for all flight conditions from hover to 120 kn. The yaw SAS, which initially featured only high-passed yaw rate feedback, was installed in an OH-58A helicopter and flight tested in 1972. Performance at forward flight speeds was satisfactory; but at hover, yaw rates were excessive. The system was then modified to add a straight-through yaw rate feedback term. Flight tests of this configuration were conducted from October-December 1973. Results were satisfactory. (Author).

This book was released on 1983 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress on two programs to evaluate composite structural components in flight service on commercial helicopters is described. Thirty-six ship sets of composite components that include the litter door, baggage door, forward fairing, and vertical fin have been installed on Bell Model 206L helicopters that are operating in widely different climatic areas. Four horizontal stabilizers and ten tail rotor spars that are production components on the S-76 helicopter will be tested after prescribed periods of service to determine the effects of the operating environment on their performance. Concurrent with the flight evaluation, specimens from materials used to fabricate the components are being exposed in ground racks and tested at specified intervals to determine the effects of outdoor environments. Results achieved from 14,000 hours of accumulated service on the 206L components, tests on a S-76 horizontal stabilizer after 1600 hours of service, tests on a S-76 tail rotor spar after 2300 hours service, and two years of ground based exposure of material coupons are reported.
