Download or read book Mushrooms, Humans and Nature in a Changing World written by Jesús Pérez-Moreno and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on recent advances in our understanding of wild edible mycorrhizal fungi, truffle and mushrooms and their cultivation. In addition to providing fresh insights into various topics, e.g. taxonomy, ecology, cultivation and environmental impact, it also demonstrates the clear but fragile link between wild edible mushrooms and human societies. Comprising 17 chapters written by 41 experts from 13 countries on four continents, it enables readers to grasp the importance of protecting this unique, invaluable, renewable resource in the context of climate change and unprecedented biodiversity loss. The book inspires professionals and encourages young researchers to enter this field to develop the sustainable use of wild edible mushrooms using modern tools and approaches. It also highlights the importance of protecting forested environments, saving species from extinction and generating a significant income for local populations, while keeping alive and renewing the link between humans and wild edible mushrooms so that in the future, the sustainable farming and use of edible mycorrhizal mushrooms will play a predominant role in the management and preservation of forested lands.

The latter three studies represent a West-East transect through the Colombian Andes, from the Pacific to the Llanos Orientales (Eastern plains) at an approximate latitude of 4° North. With this extensive project the authors aim to provide an integral view of the natural environment of one of the most biologically diverse, and moreover, one of the most beautiful regions of the world, from the tropical lowlands to the snowline.

Book Synopsis Ecology of Saprotrophic Basidiomycetes by : Lynne Boddy
Download or read book Ecology of Saprotrophic Basidiomycetes written by Lynne Boddy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-12-29 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The breadth and depth of understanding of many areas concerning basidiomycetes has increased dramatically since the premier publication of Frankland et al., Decomposer Basidiomycetes: their Biology and Ecology. New vistas have opened up with the advent of powerful computing, modeling and molecular approaches helping to greatly increase the general understanding of the ecology of basidiomycetes. This is tantamount to understanding the role of fungi in natural ecosystems because they are major agents of decomposition and nutrient cycling. These remarkable advances have been incorporated into this volume that discusses all aspects of saprotrophic basidiomycete ecology.

Book Synopsis The Ecology and Biogeography of Nothofagus Forests by : Thomas T. Veblen
Download or read book The Ecology and Biogeography of Nothofagus Forests written by Thomas T. Veblen and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecologists and biogeographers have been intrigued for a long time by the striking similarity of the vegetation and flora of southern temperate zone regions separated by large oceans. These scientists have been particularly interested in the occurrence in these regions of Nothofagus--southern beeches. This book, which focuses on the distribution, history, and ecology of the genus Nothofagus, provides a key to understanding the historical plant geography and modern vegetation patterns of the southern hemisphere. The book begins with a discussion of the long-term and broad-scale patterns of origin and differentiation in the genus. Next each major Nothofagus biome is discussed, first in a chapter that considers contemporary ecological patterns and then in a chapter that focuses on the history and paleoecology of the region. Authorities in the field deal with the temperate zone of the southwest Pacific region (New Zealand and Australia); the adjacent tropical zone of the southwest Pacific (New Guinea and New Caledonia); and South America, ranging from the Mediterranean-type climate region of central Chile to the subantarctic latitudes of Tierra del Fuego.

Book Synopsis Japanese Forestry and Its Implications by : R. Fenton
Download or read book Japanese Forestry and Its Implications written by R. Fenton and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One feature of forestry is the relative ignorance of foresters about what they are growing. This is often reinforced by lack of market interest and utilisation experience. This book intends to bridge these gaps of knowledge. Triggered by the author's economic analyses in the late 1960s, New Zealand forestry policy changed from 25 per cent of production for export to over 70 per cent. At the same time the Establishment had rejected the silvicultural approach the author had evolved which questioned certain fundamentals of conventional forestry. At that time, Japan had been taking up to 25 per cent of New Zealand's total log production, but there was no real understanding of the Japanese market. To study this in-depth, the author spent three years in Japan. The book contains the valuable research born out of his field work there, covering the marketing as well as the silviculture, sawnwood-grades and economic sides of plantation forestry. The book also included almost 40 photographs taken by the author on the various forest species in Japan. TARGET AUDIENCE: Policy makers, researchers, tertiary students, civil servants, local government officials and all those interested in silviculture, Japanese forestry and timber industry.
