Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In January 1959, a U.S. Senate Committee, of which John and Robert Kennedy were members, was investigating Mafia activities. The DEA asked Castro for the extradition of Mafiosos living in Cuba, and Castro’s denial of this request started the schism between the two nations. This first volume gathers chronologically information about the life and deeds of the young Fidel Castro, from 1945 until his ascendance to power on January 1959, and the Coup of President Urrutia in July of that year. High ranking officials conspired to take Castro out of power. Alerted by the KGB, Castro worked to destroy the conspiracy and establish his solid alliance with the Mafia. The second volume, on which Gutierrez is now working, begins with these actions and concludes on Friday, November 22, 1963, the moment in Dallas that changed America and the world.

This book was released on 2017-04-20 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the shadow of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, New Mexico’s Mora Valley harbors the ghosts of history: troubadours and soldiers, Plains Indians and settlers, families fleeing and finding home. There, more than a century ago, villagers collect scraps of paper documenting the valley’s history and their identity—military records, travelers’ diaries, newspaper articles, poetry, and more—and bind them into a leather portfolio known as “The Book of Archives.” When a bomb blast during the Mexican-American War scatters the book’s contents to the wind, the memory of the accounts lives on instead in the minds of Mora residents. Poets and storytellers pass down the valley’s traditions into the twentieth century, from one generation to the next. In this pathbreaking dual-language volume, author A. Gabriel Meléndez joins their ranks, continuing the retelling of Mora Valley’s tales for our time. A native of Mora with el don de la palabra, the divine gift of words, Meléndez mines historical sources and his own imagination to reconstruct the valley’s story, first in English and then in Spanish. He strings together humorous, tragic, and quotidian vignettes about historical events and unlikely occurrences, creating a vivid portrait of Mora, both in cultural memory and present reality. Local gossip and family legend intertwine with Spanish-language ballads and the poetry of New Mexico’s most famous dueling troubadours, Old Man Vilmas and the poet García. Drawing on New Mexican storytelling tradition, Meléndez weaves a colorful dual-language representation of a place whose irresistible characters and unforgettable events, and the inescapable truths they embody, still resonate today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. He shows how the scientist, as scientist and person, can reconcile and integrate bias, observation, data, emotion, and inference. He presents a rich mixture of analytical arguments, biographical commentary, and fictional narratives. The stories and the novella depict life in our culture in an artful way. What makes the fiction different from that of most novelists is Richardson's cross-cultural vantage point, which provides a powerful perspective. I found it fascinating." -- Daniel W. Ingersoll, Jr., St. Mary's College of Maryland "The notion of an anthropologist preparing a book of mainly fiction to articulate and elucidate anthropology's project makes good sense at this time, when many anthropologists and other students of human life are discussing our descriptions as fiction/narrative. I found each chapter fascinating." -- Gilbert Kushner, University of South Florida, Tampa Unlike the literary tradition of ethnographic fiction that attempts to bridge the gap between the world of the Western reader and the world of the exotic other of distant places, the fiction presented here focuses on the bridge itself. Richardson documents the emergence of the anthropologist's life in the context of the culture of the American South.

Book excerpt: This book collects essays which discuss women's representation of women and the war story in Latin American literature, looking in particular at their experiences, historical contexts, and their political and creative aims. This collection draws together for the first time a range of narratives of conflict and revolution as represented by Latin American women writers. By embracing a broad definition of conflict and by engaging with a wide range of narratives of conflict, it provides a space for multiple and complex versions of subjectivity, writing and experience-in-conflict to co-exist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems in LOVE TRAINING are intimate in focus and scale: taut and contemplative, they ruminate on family, exile, romantic love, and the vagaries of human perception. LOVE TRAINING, which gathers poems from several of Andrés Neuman’s books into a single unified collection, is divided into three sections. The first, the titular "Love Training," focuses on family (and its history), loss, relationships, love, and a sense of anchoring in the world. The second, “Fictions of Sight,” are associated with questions of perception, perspective, and creativity. And the third, “I Don’t Know Why” – which is the first phrase of every poem in the section – is a whimsical set of interconnected poems that ask unanswered questions; it serves as a kind of coda to the book. While Andrés Neuman is a celebrated and widely translated novelist, he is also a lucid, sensitive, incisive – and quite prolific – poet. LOVE TRAINING is the first English translation of his poetry.

Book excerpt: What is the value of telling the truth? For independent blog reporters in the midst of the Mexican Drug War, it's as important as their very lives, which are threatened on a daily basis. Blog del Narco is a heavily visited website, both in Mexico and the rest of North America, and it reveals the horrible savagery of the drug cartels. More than this, it also speaks of corruption and violence from the government itself. Many journalists in Mexico have been killed and silenced. Blog del Narco is not run by professional journalists, but it's the only forum for the true story of the violent drug war. Dying for the Truth is the first and only book release that contains both text and images, many of them gruesome, from this vital public forum. This book contains both the original Spanish-language posts in addition to their English translations. Truth is risky, and sometimes it's also harsh. Here is the reality of the Mexican Drug War, created in part by American demand for the products controlled by the cartels and their government collaborators. The Blog del Narco authors live anonymously and under threat in Mexico and aspire to relocate to the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In order to talk with the dead you have to know how to wait: they are fearful like the first steps of a child. But if we are patient one day they will answer us with a poplar leaf trapped in a broken mirror, with a flame that suddenly revives in the fireplace, with a dark return of birds before the glance of a girl who waits motionless on the threshold." —from "In Order to Talk with the Dead" Reared in the rainy forests of Chile's "La Frontera" region which had nurtured Pablo Neruda a generation earlier, Jorge Teillier has become one of Chile's leading contemporary poets, whose work is widely read in Latin America and Europe along with the poetry of his well-known contemporaries Nicanor Parra and Enrique Lihn. This English-Spanish bilingual anthology now introduces English-speaking readers to Teillier, with a representative selection of his best work from all phases of his career. Carolyne Wright has translated poems from the volumes Muertes y maravillas (1971), Para un pueblo fantasma (1978), and Cartas para reinas de otras primaveras (1985). Avoiding the bravura effects of some of his contemporaries, Teillier writes from a life lived directly and simply, returning time and again in his poetry to the timeless and mythic South of his boyhood, the "Land of Nevermore."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The product of research and investigation by a team of sixteen authors, Reagan versus the Sandinistas is the most comprehensive and current study to date of the Reagan administration's mounting campaign to reverse the Sandinista revolution. The authors thoroughly examine all major aspects of Reagan's "low-intensity war," from the U.S. government's attempts at economic destabilization to direct CIA sabotage and the sponsorship of the contras or freedom fighters. They also explore less-public tactics such as electronic penetration, behind-the-scenes manipulation of religious and ethnic tensions, and harassment of U.S. Nicaraguan specialists and "fellow travelers." The book concludes with a consideration of the impact of these activities and their implications for international law, U.S. interests, U.S. polity, and Nicaragua itself. Reagan versus the Sandinistas is designed not only for courses on Latin America, U.S. foreign policy, and international relations, but also for students, scholars, and others interested in understanding one of the most massive, complex efforts—short of direct intervention—organized by the United States to overthrow the government of another country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
