Book Synopsis Central Organizations Of Defense by : Martin Edmonds
Download or read book Central Organizations Of Defense written by Martin Edmonds and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-22 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defense and strategic studies traditionally have paid little attention to the structure and administrative context within which policy decisions are made. This volume fills that existing gap, focusing on the principal actors in the defense decisionmaking field, their relationships to one another, and the statutory and legal provisions governing the spheres of responsibility and competence among military, civil, and paramilitary institutions. The book is designed to assist scholars and policymakers in comparative analyses of complex organizations and institutions and to identify similarities and differences among the central administrative structures of the major industrial states. Toward this end, each contributor concentrates on his or her own transnational analysis. The authors are all respected experts on defense issues in their own countries, and their analyses conform to a common framework developed to compare central organizations of defense around the world and to define what states can learn from each other’s experiences and what developments can be expected.

Book Synopsis Humanity's Soldier by : David Chuter
Download or read book Humanity's Soldier written by David Chuter and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study detailing the historical, cultural and philosophical origins of French security policy since 1919. Chuter (Ministry of Defence, London) explains how and why security policy has developed since that time, arguing that the origins of current policy lie even further back in history and, through a cultural network of myths and symbolisms, continues to influence how the French perceive contemporary events--often to the bewilderment of Anglo-Saxon countries with a vastly different set of experiences. Download or read book War, State and Sovereignty written by Grégory Daho and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the links between war, state and sovereignty using an interdisciplinary approach. The authors and editors investigate the transformation of the state through the practices of security governance - an effective way to question the evolution of authority and legitimacy of state violence, and the organisation of human societies. This work contributes to the understanding of the transformation of state through the prism of security challenges and provides the means to identify the evolution of their regalian contours, the legal and technical forms of regulating violence, and the legitimisation of public power. This volume shows that the contribution of the social sciences is decisive for understanding the changes of the role and insertion of armed forces in their political, social and professional environment. Grégory Daho is Associate Professor of Political Science at University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, France Yann Richard is Professor of Geography at University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, France.
Book Synopsis A Tacit Alliance by : Sylvia Kowitt Crosbie
Download or read book A Tacit Alliance written by Sylvia Kowitt Crosbie and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost immediately after Israel declared its independence in 1948, it began to benefit from a unique series of scientific and military exchanges with France. These exchanges, arranged for the most part outside normal diplomatic channels, were in conflict with the official pro-Arab position of the French government, and also ran counter to Israel's leanings toward the United States, Britain, and the Commonwealth countries. They thus indicated the beginnings of a "tacit alliance"—a relationship of mutual cooperation and support based on no official government contract. Sylvia Kowitt Crosbie traces the rise of the France-Israel friendship from its informal beginnings through its peak at the time of the Sinai Campaign, the Suez crisis, and the joint Anglo-French invasion of Egypt to its abrupt end in 1967 during the aftermath of the Arab- Israeli June War. The author studies the problem from the standpoint of the interplay of international politics as it affected the Middle East, at the regional level of the Arab-Israeli dispute, and in terms of the domestic politics of the two partners of the alliance. Originally published in 1974. Book Synopsis Defence and Dissent in Contemporary France by : Jolyon Howorth
Download or read book Defence and Dissent in Contemporary France written by Jolyon Howorth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-05 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1984, examines France’s independent nuclear weapons programme of the 1980s alongside the French peace movement, which was almost totally absent – in contrast to the peace protests of the US and the rest of Europe. This book analyses this unusual pattern of defence and dissent, and assesses its likely development. It looks at the evolvement of French post-war defence policy, and discusses the French peace movement, attempting to explain why it was so weak.
