Book excerpt: In 1979 the Loreto School, Sealdah, located in Calcutta, had more than 700 students of which 90 were from the lower socio-economic strata and unable to pay their fees. These 90 students were part of a free primary school, which had been merged with the main school several years earlier. The failure rate among children of poor economic backgrounds was high and as a result their drops out rates were also very high. Any child who failed class V was removed from the school by the parents, which was the case for about half of the students. It was at this juncture that the management appointed a new principal, Sister Cyril. Perturbed by the existing situation, she decided to address the problems. First of all, the teachers were guided to help the academically weak students by using alternative teaching methods or organising remedials. Secondly, parents were helped to understand that failure in examinations did not mean that children should discontinue their school education. Due to concerted efforts of principal and teachers, there was a change in the attitude of both teachers and parents; the drop-out rate decreased and student performance increased gradually.

It never came to my mind that I would ever write a book myself. I did not keep a diary. Everything I wrote was from my memory with some help from my service record book. Only a few years ago I wrote a few short stories on Facebook. All my friends who read my pieces encouraged me to write more. A few even asked me to get together all my stories and publish in a book form. I do not think myself as an author. So here I am.
Book Synopsis Globalization and Transnational Capitalism in Asia and Oceania by : Jeb Sprague
Download or read book Globalization and Transnational Capitalism in Asia and Oceania written by Jeb Sprague and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: News headlines warn of rivalries and competing nations across Asia and the Pacific, even as powerful new cross-border relations form as never before. This book looks behind the Asia-Pacific curtain: at the new forms of social, economic, and political integration taking place through a global capitalism that is rife with contradictions, inequality, and crisis. We are moved beyond traditional conceptualizations of the inter-state system with its nation-state competition as the core organizing principle of world capitalism and the principal institutional framework that shapes the makeup of global social forces. These important studies examine and debate over how there is a growing transnationality of material (economic) relations in the global era, as well as an emerging transnationality of many social and class relations. How does transnational capitalist class fractions, new middle strata, and labor undergird globalization in Asia and Oceania? How have states and institutions become entwined with such processes? This book provides insight into a field of dynamic change.
