Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lord Penzance on the Bacon-Shakespeare Controversy: A Judicial Summing-Up The author of this contribution to the Shakespearean discussion, the Right Hon. Sir James Plaisted Wilde, Baron Penzance, was of a family which included among its members many distinguished lawyers. The best known and most successful of these was Sir Thomas Wilde, Lord Truro, uncle of Lord Penzance, who held the offices of attorney-general, and lord chief justice of the common pleas, and subsequently that of lord chancellor during the administration of Lord John Russell in 1850-1852. Lord Penzance was born in 1816, was educated at Winchester College, and passing on to Trinity College, Cambridge, took his degree of B.A. in 1838, and M.A. in 1842. True to the instincts of his family he selected the law as his profession, and was, in due course, called to the bar by the benchers of the Inner Temple in November, 1839. He was created Q.C. in July, 1855, and was elected a bencher of his inn in January, 1856. His success on the northern circuit, which he joined soon after his call, was early and rapid. He showed a remarkable grasp of legal principles, and was endowed by nature with a remarkable facility for marshalling facts and for a clear expression of his views. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Man From Stratford: A Juryman's View of the Bacon-Shakespeare Controversy This poison works by argument, and the safest precaution against infection is to know exactly what argument really is. To change the simile, argument may be called a Court of Law wherein the witnesses are Facts, the lawyers are Inference, Deduction and Analogy, the judge is Analysis, and the jury Man kind. In this little book that I have ventured to write I hope to have shown that for Shakespeare there are a few lawyers and a few witnesses, while for Bacon there are many lawyers and no witnesses. Inference, k.c., can work up many damaging looking things arising out of various simple, and to average minds, ordinary and easily understandable circumstances, but he is not allowed to give his opinion on the facts that the Circe of the West who first brewed this lep'rous distilment bore the significant name of Delia Bacon. We need not speak of her sad end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Shakespeare, Bacon And The Great Unknown by : Andrew Lang
Download or read book Shakespeare, Bacon And The Great Unknown written by Andrew Lang and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory that Francis Bacon was, in the main, the author of “Shakespeare’s plays,” has now been for fifty years before the learned world. Its advocates have met with less support than they had reason to expect. Their methods, their logic, and their hypotheses closely resemble those applied by many British and foreign scholars to Homer; and by critics of the very Highest School to Holy Writ. Yet the Baconian theory is universally rejected in England by the professors and historians of English literature; and generally by students who have no profession save that of Letters. The Baconians, however, do not lack the countenance and assistance of highly distinguished persons, whose names are famous where those of mere men of letters are unknown; and in circles where the title of “Professor” is not duly respected. Contents: Introduction Chapter I: The Baconian And Anti-Willian Positions Chapter Ii: The “Silence” About Shakespeare Chapter Iii: That Impossible He - The Schooling Of Shakespeare Chapter Iv: Mr. Collins On Shakespeare’s Learning Chapter V: Shakespeare, Genius, And Society Chapter Vi: The Courtly Plays: “Love’s Labour’s Lost” Chapter Vii: Contemporary Recognition Of Will As Author Chapter Viii: “The Silence Of Philip Henslowe” Chapter Ix: The Later Life Of Shakespeare - His Monument And Portraits Chapter X: “The Traditional Shakspere” Chapter Xi: The First Folio Chapter Xii: Ben Jonson And Shakespeare Chapter Xiii: The Preoccupations Of Bacon Appendices Appendix I: “Troilus And Cressida” Appendix Ii - Chettle’s Supposed Allusion To Will Shakspere This book is annotated with a rare extensive biographical sketch of the author, Andrew Lang, written by Sir Edmund Gosse, CB, a contemporary poet and writer.
