Book Synopsis Guyana Diaries by : Kimberly D Nettles
Download or read book Guyana Diaries written by Kimberly D Nettles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guyana Diaries narrates the life histories of members of the Red Thread Development Corporation, a group of women activists in the Caribbean. Kimberly Nettles, an African American researcher, explores the impact of their work on these women’s lives and, in the process, discovers differences of class and nation that overshadow the gender and race she shares with her subjects. Blending feminist ethnography, critical autobiography, and literary narratives, Nettles examines both the collective and her own experiences in studying its members, producing an illuminating, evocative work of self and other. It should be of interest to those in race and ethnic studies, gender studies, Caribbean studies, development studies, and qualitative research.

Book Synopsis The Pedagogy of Action by : Nesha Z. Haniff
Download or read book The Pedagogy of Action written by Nesha Z. Haniff and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-24 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of teaching consciousness as a requirement for transformations in social justice. In artful narrative, Nesha Haniff traces her own conscientization as a colonized child in Guyana, exploring the cultural and intellectual forces that shape the creation of the Pedagogy of Action. Drawing from Paulo Freire and Ela Bhatt, participants in POA teach an oral HIV education module to marginalized communities in the USA, South Africa and the Caribbean, as the nexus for dismantling traditional pedagogies of race, gender, service and American hegemony. The many challenges of institutional and cultural obstacles, mainly those that excluded poor and black students from overseas travel, required innovation and persistence. The book features essays written by POA students and South African participants reflecting on their own transformations. These essayists are among the hundreds of participants who, over 15 years, in the practice of radical love, grew the Pedagogy of Action.

Download or read book Riches from Atlantic Commerce written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is generally recognized that the Dutch played a prominent part in the world economy of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, most studies of Dutch long-distance shipping and trade have focused on Asia and neglected the Atlantic region. In this volume, eight scholars contribute their expertise on Dutch trade with Africa, the Americas and the West Indies, and demonstrate that Dutch trade in the Atlantic was far more extensive and valuable than has generally been assumed, and exceeded the trade with Asia at that time. Supported by extensive archival research and quantitative data, the study makes a strong appeal for a reassessment of Dutch maritime commerce of that period, and should stimulate further research of Dutch Atlantic trade. Riches from Atlantic Commerce has been selected by Choice as Outstanding Academic Title (2005). Contributors include: Christopher Ebert, Victor Enthoven, Henk den Heijer, Han Jordaan, Wim Klooster, Eric Willem van der Oest, Johannes Postma, Claudia Schnurmann, and Stuart B. Schwartz.
