Book Synopsis Nearly Normal Galaxies by : Sandra M. Faber
Download or read book Nearly Normal Galaxies written by Sandra M. Faber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is sometimes said that astronomy is the crossroads of physics. In the same spirit, it can forcefully be argued that galaxies are the crossroads of astronomy. Internal pro ces ses within galaxies involve all of the fundamental components of astrophysics: stellar evolution, star formation, low-density astrophysics, dynamics, hydrodynamics, and high-energy astrophysics. Indeed, one can hardly name an observational datum in any wavelength range on any kind of celestial object that does not provide a useful clue to galaxy formation and evolution. Although internal processes in galaxies until recently occupied most of our attention, we now know that it is also vital to relate galaxies to their environment. How galaxies congregate in larger structures and are in turn influenced by them are crucial questions for galactic evolution. On a grander level we have also come to regard galaxies as the basic building blocks of the universe, the basic units whereby the large scale structure of the universe is apprehended and quantified. On a grander level still, we also believe strongly that galaxies are the direct descendents of early density irregularities in the Big Bang. Galaxy properties are now viewed as providing a crucial constraint on the physics of the Big Bang and a vital link between the macroscopic and microscopic structure of the universe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Z-Burbia: A Post Apocalyptic Zombie Adventure Novel Description- When the zombie apocalypse hits the quiet Asheville, NC subdivision of Whispering Pines, the residents don't turn to the police or the military. Nope. They rely on their iron-fisted Home Owners Association! Which Jace Stanford and his family aren’t too keen on. Undead hordes are hard enough to deal with in a post-apocalyptic hellscape, who needs HOA fines too? Filled with blood, gore, plenty of bad jokes, cannibals, dreaded HOA covenants, and a whole lot of snark, Z-Burbia is guaranteed to thrill and entertain! Welcome to life in Z-Burbia! Reviews- “The first novel in Jake Bible’s series Z-Burbia hooked me. What appeared to be a jokey take on zombie fiction quickly develops some great characters and story.” -BoingBoing.net “For those still not convinced about the zombie genre, Z-Burbia is worth a read if only for its female characters: Jake Bible doesn’t have time for vapid whimpering damsels in distress. Oh no. Bible’s characters are thinking, acting, feisty sorts.” -Lee Murray, Bram Stoker Award-winning novelist Z-Burbia 2: Parkway To Hell: Description- With Whispering Pines refusing to give up and die, Jace “Long Pork” Stanford has nothing better to do than find out who the heavily-armed newcomers in town are. Well, while he’s not busy dealing with the ever present Z hordes. Or running for his life from paramilitary mercenaries. Or possibly blowing up more of the zombie-infested city because he can’t help pressing buttons. Buttons are meant to be pressed, even in the apocalypse, right? Looks like it’s just another day in Z-Burbia! Z-Burbia 3: Estate of the Dead: Description- Jace Stanford has lost family, friends, and his arm to the zombie apocalypse that hit his subdivision of Whispering Pines. But he’s also gained something he never in a million years would have thought would be a plus: the cannibal savant known as Elsbeth. Now Jace needs Elsbeth’s help more than ever. But is she up to the task when her past is revealed? A past that is possibly more shocking than the zombie apocalypse itself? Jace is gonna find out the hard way. And, as everyone knows, in Z-Burbia the hard way usually means a whole lot of people are going to die! Welcome back to Z-Burbia, y’all! Z-Burbia 4: Cannibal Road: Description- Forced out of Asheville, Jace Stanford’s family, along with a convoy of suburbanites, misfits, criminals, and soldiers, must battle their way through the I-40 corridor of Eastern Tennessee. When they are separated from their friends and allies in Knoxville, the Stanfords have to rely on their skills as post-apocalyptic survivors to fight off the Zs, insane Vols fans, homicidal sorority girls, and the most deadly of the post-apocalyptic threats- cannibal gangs! No longer are the Stanfords trying to survive day by day, but hour by hour and minute by minute, as they flee Z-Burbia and race through the hellscape of Cannibal Road! Reviews- “Once again Mr. Bible has cracked me up in the zombie apocalypse! Jace is still funny as hell, I love him. Elsbeth is still bad ass and she is my favorite. Stella and the kids brought out some cans of whoop ass as well!” -Melissa Martin, 5-star Goodreads review “I'm running out of things to say about how much I love this series. Each book is just as good as the last.” -Jennifer Wheeler, 5-star Goodreads review Z-Burbia 5: The Bleeding Heartland: Description- The American Midwest was a bucolic landscape that didn’t quite adjust to the zombie apocalypse. Instead of open arms and welcoming faces, there are now open mouths and ravenous Zs. The blue collar drive to work hard has become a red-mouthed hunger for flesh. Jace Stanford, his family, and the rag tag bunch of Whispering Pines survivors, private military contractors, laborers, and former (hopefully?) cannibals now must face the vast, exposed space of America’s Heartland in order to get to a possible sanctuary in the post-apocalyptic ruins of Boulder, Colorado. Just a simple convoy from point A to point B, right? Yeah, right. Nothing is ever simple in Z-Burbia! Z-Burbia 6: Rocky Mountain Die: Description- With the plains to their backs, Jace Stanford and crew are just steps from their destination: the Stronghold of Boulder, CO. All they have to do is battle the mega-powerful, corporate/political/military entity that is the Consortium, survive the brainwashed killing machines that call themselves the Sisters, and deal with a mad scientist hell bent on making life really, really hard for everyone because he’s just a f*ing jerk. Not a problem! If anyone can get his friends and family through a nightmare like this, it’s Jace Stanford! What’s that? There’s a horde of zombies that’s close to half a million strong coming for them all? Okay, everyone’s screwed… It is Z-Burbia after all! Book Synopsis The A to Z of Witchcraft by : Michael D. Bailey
Download or read book The A to Z of Witchcraft written by Michael D. Bailey and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great deal has been written about the history of witchcraft, but much of what has been written is unreliable, exaggerated, or inaccurate. This problem is especially acute in regard to modern witchcraft, or Wicca, and its supposed connections to historical witchcraft in medieval and early modern Europe. The A to Z of Witchcraft provides a reliable reference source for both academics and general readers interested in the actual historical development of witchcraft in the western world. The focus of the dictionary is on Western Europe during the late-medieval and early modern periods, when the specific idea of diabolical witchcraft developed and when the so-called 'great witch-hunts' occurred. Entries are also provided that deal with magic and witchcraft in the earlier Christian period and classical antiquity, as well as with the lingering belief in witchcraft in the modern world, and with the development of the modern, neo-pagan religion of witchcraft, also known as Wicca. For comparative purposes, some entries have been provided that deal with aspects and systems of magic found in other parts of the world that seem to bear some relation to the idea of witchcraft as it developed in Christian Europe. The regions dealt with are mainly Africa, along with such New-World practices as Voodoo and Santeria. Entries in the dictionary cover important people in the history of witchcraft, from the medieval inquisitors and early modern magistrates who developed the stereotype of the historical witch to the modern individuals who have developed the religion of Wicca. Also included are legal terms and concepts important to the prosecution of the supposed crime of witchcraft, and religious and theological concepts pertaining to the demonic elements that came to be associated with witchcraft, as well as more popular beliefs and aspects of common folklore and mythology that became attached to the developing idea of witchcraft. Geographic entries are also included, discussing the scope of witch-hunting in various regions of Europe and the world, and describing specific examples of major witch-hunts such as those that occurred in Salem, Massachusetts.
Book Synopsis Bridge - from a to Z by : Eddie Rose
Download or read book Bridge - from a to Z written by Eddie Rose and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-08-21 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People play bridge for different reasons. Some play bridge because of their competitive nature. Others play for the social interaction. Still others do it for mental exercise and health reasons. Some do it for sheer fun and enjoyment. And many play bridge for a combination of all of these. Regardless of your reason(s) for playing bridge, I think it is not unreasonable to assume that you would like to play better and with greater consistency and, even if winning is not necessarily your sole objective per se, to prevail occasionally at the table. Bridge---From A to Z is not for the beginning bridge player. Nor will reading this book make you a bridge superstar overnight. But if you read it judiciously and put its principles into practice, it will enable you to make that critical breakthrough, and literally take your game to the next level! In Bridge---From A to Z, I have enumerated 26 fundamental bridge principles, one for each letter of the alphabet, as the title suggests. To reinforce these principles, I have included numerous instructive bridge hands, almost all of which are taken from actual duplicate competition. As most bridge players know, duplicate bridge is a game of skill. However, as in most games, the elements of luck (both good and bad) are there. You might play easy hands against strong players or difficult hands against weaker players, or just the opposite may be the case.. The opponents may give you gifts. Or they may fix you. These are things over which we have little or no control. Conversely, there are things over which we do have control. And these are the things I have emphasized in this book. One does not need to have a background in higher mathematics to be a good bridge player. Certainly, some innate analytical ability is a big plus. Famous fictional detectives, such as Sherlock Holmes, Charlie Chan, and Ellery Queen, would probably have made great bridge players! But the things that are really important---listening, counting, focusing---are relatively simple to understand and execute. And the bottom line is that you have to do this yourself. No one---not a pro, a teacher, a mentor---can do them for you. In reading and absorbing the principles enumerated in Bridge---From A to Z, you will feel more confident in your own inherent ability to play bridge at a higher level. And in so doing, irrespective of your specific reason(s) for playing bridge, I believe you will derive more fun and enjoyment from this wonderful game we all love so much.
Book Synopsis Galaxy Formation and Evolution by : Hyron Spinrad
Download or read book Galaxy Formation and Evolution written by Hyron Spinrad and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-08-29 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Astronomical Life – Observing the Depths of the Universe” Though science as a subject can be di?cult, what has been more important for me is that its practice can also be rewarding fun! This book is crafted to expose the reader to the excitement of modern observational cosmology through the study of galaxy evolution over space and cosmic time. Recent extragalactic research has led to many rapid advances in the ?eld. Even a suitable skeptic of certain pronouncements about the age and structure of the Universe should be pleased with the large steps that have been taken in furthering our understanding of the Universe since the early 1990’s. My personal involvement in galaxy research goes back to the 1960’s. At that point, galaxies were easily recognized and partially understood as organized c- lections of stars and gas. What their masses were presented a problem, which I supposed would just fade away. But fade it didn’t. Distant active nuclei and quasars were discovered in the mid-1960’s. A c- mon view of QSOs was that they have large redshifts, but what use are they for cosmology or normal galaxy astrophysics? I shared that conclusion. My expec- tions fell below their potential utility. In short, the Universe of our expectations rarely matches the Universe as it is discovered.
