Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fall of the Berlin Wall in the 1990s and the rise of the internet heralded a profound transformation in the century's spirit. The 21st century is the era of the information revolution and, indeed, the century of America’s greatness. The Mission of the American President is to look toward the future with lofty goals, great vision, and global responsibility. Human history is shaped by heroes or ambitious figures who grasp the direction of history or by prevailing ideologies. Science encompasses humanity's highest rationality, while religion reflects the most profound emotions. Science is not faith; religion embodies human beliefs. Religious conflicts can lead to a "clash of civilizations" and trigger wars. Political ideology (PI) encompasses reason, emotion, and belief. When anger dominates political life, reason cannot control emotion, leading to violent conflict. Between nations or hostile regimes, this can result in war. Within a country, it may provoke internal violence. In democratic nations, outstanding political leaders are characterized by far-reaching vision and broad-mindedness, replacing emotional anger with rational spirit. This book introduces the "theory of three worlds," positing that the material world and the world of ideas comprise the real world, while outside the real world, there exists a transcendent world that does not rely on human perception. From the perspective of "MetaHistory," the 21st century is the century of the information revolution and, consequently, the century of America, the most powerful force driving this revolution.

Meanwhile, evangelical Christianity is the world's fastest-growing major religion in terms of conversion growth. And yet, at the dawn of the third millennium, the church's primary task to "go and make disciples of all nations" remains undone. Missions in the Third Millennium charts twenty-one trends--both positive and negative--with continuing significance for the Great Commission community in the twenty-first century. Revised and updated to include two new chapters on urban missions and evangelizing Muslims, this up-to-date volume offers insights to help students, churches, missionaries, agencies, and Christians from outside the West grasp the big picture and take practical steps for more effective involvement. This edition contains extensive notes, expanded suggestions for further reading, and discussion questions.

The essays in this volume consider the state of China's economic reforms, the institutional changes necessary for China to become a global economic power, and the interplay between market reforms and social development in China.

Drawing on their experience with Interbrand, the world's largest branding consultancy, and including chapters by branding experts from Microsoft, McDonalds, Pepsi-Cola and Procter & Gamble, the authors examine how this should be done and map out the future of e-branding.

The happy convergence of a new millennium, the 40th Anniversary of the Canadian Music Educators' Association/l'Association Canadienne des Educateurs de Musique (in 1999), and ISME 2000 in Edmonton, prompted the CMEA/ACEM to initiate a national dialogue about the future of Canadian music education. Looking Forward, edited by two of Canada's leading scholars in music education, Betty Hanley and Brian A. Roberts, is the result. Addressing a broad range of topics and educational levels, the book provides a provocative and thoughtful look at opportunities and challenges identified by fourteen articulate and well-informed authors who represent diverse backgrounds and viewpoints. The dialogue has begun.

Book excerpt: An objective, comprehensive, and accessible examination of today's most crucial problem: preserving the environment in the face of society's insatiable demand for energy. In Energy at the Crossroads, Vaclav Smil considers the twenty-first century's crucial question: how to reconcile the modern world's unceasing demand for energy with the absolute necessity to preserve the integrity of the biosphere. With this book he offers a comprehensive, accessible guide to today's complex energy issues—how to think clearly and logically about what is possible and what is desirable in our energy future. After a century of unprecedented production growth, technical innovation, and expanded consumption, the world faces a number of critical energy challenges arising from unequal resource distribution, changing demand patterns, and environmental limitations. The fundamental message of Energy at the Crossroads is that our dependence on fossil fuels must be reduced not because of any imminent resource shortages but because the widespread burning of oil, coal, and natural gas damages the biosphere and presents increasing economic and security problems as the world relies on more expensive supplies and Middle Eastern crude oil. Smil begins with an overview of the twentieth century's long-term trends and achievements in energy production. He then discusses energy prices, the real cost of energy, and "energy linkages"—the effect energy issues have on the economy, on quality of life, on the environment, and in wartime. He discusses the pitfalls of forecasting, giving many examples of failed predictions and showing that unexpected events can disprove complex models. And he examines the pros and cons not only of fossil fuels but also of alternative fuels such as hydroenergy, biomass energy, wind power, and solar power. Finally, he considers the future, focusing on what really matters, what works, what is realistic, and which outcomes are most desirable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Children are exposed to a series of environmental threats to their health, physical and mental development--even their survival. Preliminary estimates suggest that up to one-third of the global burden of disease can be attributed to negative environmental indicators, such as polluted water and air. The good news is that morbidity and mortality due to unhealth environmental conditions are largely preventable by taking decisive action and finding innovative, healthy, cost-effective and sustainable ways to develop and improve our livelihoods. As this books outlines, prevention is the only sustainable solution: a healthy future for our children will be ensured only through safeguarding the environment. By illustrating the link between the environment and the well-being of our children, Children in the new millennium intends to raise awareness and deepen our understanding of environmental health issues. Providing an informed basis for action and practical recommendations at different levels, the three United Nations agencies involved with the production of Children in the new millennium hope to inspire everyone who cares about children to take decisive action that will improve both their helath and that of the environment.
