Download or read book Mathematics in Nursery Education, Second Edition written by Ann Montague-Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Second Edition covers the mathematics needed to teach the Early Learning Goals. It has been up-dated to include new research findings as well as new topics, for example, using number lines with young children. The topics of counting, number (including early addition and subtraction), pattern, measures and shape and space are covered in detail. Each chapter contains suggestions for key questions to ask in order to encourage children to discuss their mathematics and to demonstrate what they know and understand. There are sections on developing problem-solving skills, working with parents and other adults in the nursery setting, as well as detailed charts giving ideas for activities and how to assess learning, and some activities planned in full. The final chapter gives detailed help with planning and assessment of mathematics. The book is intended for anyone working with children in the early years: teachers, nursery nurses, classroom assistants, playgroup leaders and workers, child-minders and day care staff. It is particularly suitable as a course text for those training to be teachers, either through the undergraduate route, or through a PGCE, and for those studying for early childhood degrees or diplomas.

Book Synopsis Primary Mathematics and the Developing Professional by : Alison Millett
Download or read book Primary Mathematics and the Developing Professional written by Alison Millett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-07-11 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract. This introduction sets the scene for the remainder of the book by considering first the international context of widespread concern about the improvement of numeracy skills. This is related to reform movements in the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries aimed at modernising primary (elementary) school mathematics curricula. A detailed account is given of the National Numeracy Strategy in England, a systemic government-imposed response to concern about standards implemented in 1999/2000. This includes a discussion of the alternative meanings of numeracy. An earlier initiative sponsored by a United Kingdom charitable trust reacting to concern about primary numeracy was the Leverhulme Numeracy Research Programme. This large-scale longitudinal study and linked set of case-study projects, focusing on reasons for low attainment, took place during 1997-2002. This book, and each other in the same series, is based on results of that research. The timescale fortuitously enabled the research team to also report on some effects of the systemic reform in the National Numeracy Strategy. 1. THE INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT In many countries, there are recurring periods of national concern about the low standards of calculation skills shown by children in primary (elementary) schools. Recently, these concerns have become more urgent and more political with the publication of international comparisons of mathematical achievement, first at secondary and more recently at primary level (e. g. Lapointe, Mead, & Askew 1992; Mullis et al. , 1997).

Book Synopsis Connecting Primary Maths and Science: A Practical Approach by : Alan Cross
Download or read book Connecting Primary Maths and Science: A Practical Approach written by Alan Cross and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At last, a unique book that explores and exploits the links between primary mathematics and science so that you can promote learning in both of these important STEM subjects! Rich in engaging ideas and activities for the classroom this book helps you plan and teach well-structured lessons in a more integrated way. The book outlines key curriculum topics in both subjects and considers why it is important and beneficial to make connections between the two. As well as covering key subject knowledge (what you need to know) and teaching activities (what you need to do), the book explores learners’ mathematical and scientific needs, and defines the characteristics of effective teaching and learning, bringing it all together with ideas which you can use straightway in your classroom. Key features: • promotes an informed approach to integrating primary mathematics and science teaching • helps address the time constraints of delivering the primary national curriculum • presents engaging ideas which can be directly transferred to the classroom • provides a real-life context to mathematics and science activities to inspire student learning • helps you combine two closely related and sometimes tricky subject areas – why teach one subject when you can teach two at the same time! "Accessible, readable and engaging with a range of innovative teaching ideas, this is an invaluable book for all trainee and qualified primary teachers and other educational professionals with links to primary mathematics and science. A great 'go to' book for teachers and trainee teachers alike. Chapters are constructed with easy to read objectives and clear summaries. Many practical ideas, incorporating current research, as well as information on mathematicians and scientists, which is great for boosting children’s aspirations and also helping with teachers’ confidence on the subjects. A lovely, easy to access book, whether it is to use for reference, to dip in and out of or just to use alongside planning materials." Maria McArdle, Senior Lecturer PGCE & Mathematics Lead (Primary), University of Bedfordshire, UK
