Book excerpt: "The regulation and management of lake water levels have become a major form of anthropogenic disturbance in temperate and boreal aquatic ecosystems. Drawing the water level down as the winter season progresses can lead to substantial exposure of the littoral zone, rendering it susceptible to desiccation and freezing. Such changes in the hydrological regime of littoral zones can have significant effects on aquatic biota, including macroinvertebrates. These organisms are widely considered as robust bioindicators, but it is also well known that their abundance and distribution is characterized by substantial patchiness. Often, scientists who use macroinvertebrates as bioindicators, focus their sampling on a single habitat type (e.g., stony littoral) to reduce the heterogeneity in macroinvertebrate distributions. However, applying such an approach in the context of an environmental stressor makes it difficult to draw general conclusions about the impact of a potential stressor on the entire littoral zone. Recently, a debate has emerged in the literature over the effects of water level drawdown on macroinvertebrate communities and we think that at least part of this debate may be due to different sampling strategies employed across studies to examine the effects of drawdown on macroinvertebrate communities. In order to evaluate how nearshore macroinvertebrate communities, from a variety of habitats, are affected by drawdown, we sampled 15 reservoirs and quantified macroinvertebrate abundance and composition. To these data, we applied a combination of (generalized) linear mixed effects models and multivariate analyses to answer the following question; what are the effects of drawdown on macroinvertebrate abundance and community composition? To address this question and incorporate the possible effects of heterogeneity in abundance and distribution of macroinvertebrates, we explicitly considered multiple physical environmental variables as additional predictors of macroinvertebrate abundance and community composition. We found that drawdown and thermal regime were significant predictors of macroinvertebrate abundance, but explained negligible amounts of variation in the community composition. Overall, these findings help elucidate how macroinvertebrate communities respond to winter drawdown and strengthen the knowledge on how localized environmental conditions influence macroinvertebrates. Furthermore we think that our sampling and analytical approach provides a useful template for other scientists to adopt when quantifying the effect of a potential stressor on nearshore macroinvertebrate communities." --

Book excerpt: "The aim of this study was to investigate the environmental drivers of river ecosystem metabolism and macroinvertebrate density in a sub-arctic river. Ecosystem metabolism is the combination of gross primary production and ecosystem respiration within a river. Aquatic macroinvertebrates link primary producers at the base of the food web with secondary consumers. The extent to which photosynthetically active radiation, discharge, and nutrients influence metabolism rates and how primary production and river discharge rates influence benthic macroinvertebrate densities in sub-arctic rivers is not clear. These processes ultimately help regulate prey resources available for upper level consumers such as juvenile salmon. I employed Random Forests model analyses to identify important predictor variables for primary production and respiration rates (estimated using the single-station diel oxygen method) at four sites in the Chena River, sub-arctic Alaska, throughout the summers of 2008 and 2009. I calculated Spearman correlations between nutrient levels and metabolism rates. I used Random Forests models to identify the variables important for predicting benthic macroinvertebrate density and biomass at the study sites. The models indicated that discharge and length of time between high water events were the most important variables measured for predicting metabolism rates. Discharge was identified as the most important variable for predicting benthic macroinvertebrate density and biomass. Phosphorus concentration was low (at times below the detection limit), while nitrogen concentration was more variable; the ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus was above the threshold for phosphorus limitation, suggesting that phosphorus may have been limiting primary production"--Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: Abundance patterns in the small coastal and interior streams were related to the timing of invertebrate life cycles whereas abundance was related to life cycles and the spring freshet in the large rivers. [...] Coefficients of variation were determined for the ordinations of the genus/species, family, and functional data and for the ordination of the environmental variables, that change seasonally. [...] The discharge level achieved and the duration depends on the depth of the snow pack and the speed of melting. [...] The extreme temperatures in the interior increase the rate of weathering of the sedimentary rocks and result in hardwater streams with high alkalinity, high conductivity, and a slightly basic pH (Table 2.1). [...] The Fraser and the Thompson have an intermediate alkalinity, and a conductivity and pH similar to the interior streams (Table 2.1).

Book excerpt: This state-of-the-art, research level text considers the growing volume of research at the interface of hydrology and ecology and focuses on: the evolution of hydroecology / ecohydrology process understanding hydroecological interactions, dynamics and linkages methodological approaches detailed case studies future research needs The editors and contributors are internationally recognised experts in hydrology and ecology from institutions across North America, South America, Australia, and Europe. Chapters provide a broad geographical coverage and bridge the traditional subject divide between hydrology and ecology. The book considers a range of organisms (plants, invertebrates and fish), provides a long-term perspective on contemporary and palaeo-systems, and emphasises wider research implications with respect to environmental and water resource management. Hydroecology and Ecohydrology is an indispensable resource for academics and postgraduate researchers in departments of physical geography, earth sciences, environmental science, environmental management, civil engineering, water resource management, biology, zoology, botany and ecology. It is also of interest to professionals working within environmental consultancies, organizations and national agencies.
