Book excerpt: The low speed aerodynamic characteristics of a large-scale model intended to represent advanced fixed-wing fighters have been investigated in the Ames 40 by 80 foot wind tunnel. The model possessed positive static longitudinal stability to nearly 28 deg angle of attack, the maximum tested, both with and without leading-edge flaps deflected. Lateral control with differentially deflected ailerons and a right wing spoiler simultaneously deployed as combined controls was only slightly greater than that with the differentially deflected ailerons deployed as a separate control without the spoiler. Measured lift and drag were in close agreement with that predicted by theory to about 14 deg angle of attack, including the prediction of lift due to 30 deg of trailing edge flap deflection. Estimated takeoff performance of an aircraft 4/3 the scale of the test model showed takeoff distances of less than 2000 ft.

Book excerpt: An investigation has been conducted in the Langley 4- by 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel to determine the effects of various external-store configurations of the longitudinal and lateral aerodynamic characteristics of a model of a 45 degree swept-wing fighter airplane. Pylon-mounted stores located at 23.8, 46.2, and 67.0 percent of the wing semispan were tested individually and in various combinations. The inboard stores relative to outboard stores were similar in shape but approximately 25 percent greater in size. The stores located at 46.2 percent of the wing semispan represented a large fuel tank and had an unsymmetrical shape.

The idea of blending the wing with the fuselage and eliminating the tail is not new, it has long been known that tailless aircraft can suffer from stability and control problems that must be addressed early in the design. This thesis is concerned with identifying and then evaluating the flight dynamics, stability, flight controls and handling qualities of a generic BWB large transport aircraft concept. Longitudinal and lateral-directional static and dynamic stability analysis using aerodynamic data representative of different BWB configurations enabled a better understanding of the BWB aircraft characteristics and identification of the mechanisms that influence its behaviour. The static stability studies revealed that there is limited control power both for the longitudinal and lateral-directional motion. The solution for the longitudinal problem is to limit the static margins to small values around the neutral point, and even to use negative static margins. However, for the directional control problem the solution is to investigate alternative ways of generating directional control power. Additional investigation uncovered dynamic instability due to the low and negative longitudinal and directional static stability. Furthermore, adverse roll and yaw responses were found to aileron inputs. The implementation of a pitch rate command/attitude hold flight control system (FCS) improved the longitudinal basic BWB characteristics to satisfactory levels, or Level 1, flying and handling qualities (FHQ). Although the lateral-directional command and stability FCS also improved the BWB flying and handling qualities it was demonstrated that Level 1 was not achieved for all flight conditions due to limited directional control power. Test Mach numbers varied from 0.6 to 1.4, angles of attack from -28 to 40 degrees, and angles of sideslip from -16 to 12 degrees. Reynolds numbers ranged from 0.9 million to 1.8 million based on the projected frontal height of the models.

A complete aerodynamic data base would encompass the coefficients of the static longitudinal and lateral motions and the related dynamic coefficients. In this book the aerodynamics of 27 vehicles are considered. Only a few of them did really fly. Therefore the aerodynamic data bases are often not complete, in particular when the projects or programs were more or less abruptly stopped, often due to political decisions. Configurational design studies or the development of demonstrators usually happen with reduced or incomplete aerodynamic data sets. Therefore some data sets base just on the application of one of the following tools: semi-empirical design methods, wind tunnel tests, numerical simulations. In so far a high percentage of the data presented is incomplete and would have to be verified. Flight mechanics needs the aerodynamic coefficients as function of a lot of variables. The allocation of the aerodynamic coefficients for a particular flight operation at a specific trajectory point is conducted by an aerodynamic model. The establishment of such models is described in this book. This book is written for graduate and doctoral students to give them insight into the aerodynamics of the various flight configurations. Further for design and development engineers in industry and at research institutes (including universities) searching for an appropriate vehicle shape, as well as for non-specialists, who may be interested in this subject. The book will be helpful, too, in the case that system studies require in their concept phases the selection of suitable vehicle shapes.
